Funky Friday: Roadkill and Magic Sequins

This was a short week, technically, but it felt like most of this past year: discombobulated, not really sure what day it is, and that feeling that we're just kind of floating along, waiting for the next thing to happen.

In spite of my temporary existential crisis, I tend to look for the funny side of things. I'm not an optimist, but I can keep my pessimism in check by seeking out the silly.
Like this "roadkill" faux fur. I thought "roadkill" the second I looked at it, and it's been my roadkill top in my head ever since. Doesn't it look like I've been run over by a tractor? I guess that would make me a...fashion victim? Ha ha! See, feeling better already.

  • Faux fur top - Euramerican Express, thrifted; purchased here for $24.95
  • Black sweater - Sonia Rykiel, consignment; last seen here in October 2020, layered under a dress
  • Skirt - Banana Republic, consignment; last worn here in September 2020 with orbs
  • Booties - Coffee Kope Tiam, Fluevog; last seen here in December 2020 with green velvet and more sequins
  • Coat (below) - L'Atiste, consignment, Vancouver; last worn here a couple of weeks ago

I had fun - as always - with my magic sequin skirt.
I matched my top and my tights by drawing zigzags on the skirt with my finger, then just rubbed my hands down it and flattened all the sequins down again. Maaaagic!

I drew a happy face on the skirt for one coworker, and repeated the zigzags for another.
The top is pretty kooky - I was able to show it to a Vancouver colleague on video chat. She was appropriately gobsmacked by it and she laughed her head off when I called it roadkill.

It's not cut that great - it's boxy and has splits on the sides and it's a wrestle to get it on (it's a pullover with no stretch).
I layered a long-sleeved thin sweater under it to keep my bare middle from being exposed. You can see the black cuffs.

I roasted, and considered taking the black sweater off.
It's not as cold out as it was last week!

Masked up.
The pattern is sort of like cork or tree cells.

Outerwear - I had to wear a coat with really wide arms in order to accommodate the roadkill top.
This is the only one that fit, and I was worried about being cold, as it's a really thin coat. However, it worked out perfectly.

Outerwear stuff:
I'm so neutral!

  • Scarf /gloves - Danier Leather
  • Mask - by Mom

The stuff:
One of my favourite pairs of booties.

Round bling:
Sparkly too!

  • Silver/lucite cuff - Alexis Bittar, consignment, Vancouver
  • Fang cuff - Alexis Bittar, consignment, Sidney
  • Silver/onyx ring - Toccara, vintage fair
  • Silver/crystal ring - Soul Flower
  • Earrings - thrifted

Having fun with my outfit really helped my mood, and now - woo! - it's the weekend! Stay safe, be calm and be kind.

  1. Faaabulous outfit! Although, if the zigzag is black, I think I'd have gone with black shoes, but I have issues with brown...

    1. Thanks, Ismay! I might do black at a later point, but I liked the taupe with the dull gold of the skirt and the brown tones in the faux fur. The tights were enough black for me.

  2. What a totally fun outfit! Roadkill - lmao!! Even your stockings are chevron patterned. And really, how cool to have an etch-a-sketch skirt.

I hope you have a happy and peace filled weekend!

    1. Road kill and etch-a-sketch - you know you have a fun wardrobe when you have clothes with those references, right, Nana? Thank you! I hope you had a good weekend too!

  4. A very quirky outfit. Road kill is a brilliant name for the jumper and I'm afraid, yes it does make you a fashion victim if it was flattened by a tractor!

    Have a great weekend

  5. That coat! I love it so much. I keep adding to my list of things to search out at Thrift stores and along wool/tweed coat is on the list.

  6. I readily confess to not being an optimist either, and it's refreshing to know I'm not alone. I do keep my pessimism in check most of the time, although it seems to be taking a bit more effort ever since we lost Phoebe. Getting dressed up and playing around with my wardrobe is definitely keeping me sane right now.
I had a giggle at your "roadkill' top. Now that's a name that will stick for sure! And what an fun, quirky outfit this is. A symphony of zigzags :-) I do, however, hear you on roasting in that top, as well as the unwieldy sleeves!
I hope you're having a relaxing weekend, Sheila! Here in Belgium, Spring has arrived overnight. xxx

    1. I try to be optimistic, Ann, but I've pretty much accepted that I'm not. It does mean I'm more mentally prepared for something bad happening, though. It is harder to find the bright side when life throws something sad at you, isn't it?

Hee hee, I know - it will forever be my roadkill top now. I had a lot of run wearing it. I wish spring would hurry up and get here! I'm tired of rain/storms/snow!

  8. I wouldn't name you a fashion victim!! Lol. I love how you played with the skirt! Roadkill reminder me of a desert in the UK , rocky road, and it taste so awful that we called it roadkill. In fact, we named that restaurant roadkill, and we stuk do when we pass it!

  9. Morning Shiela, so glad your funky fashion sense cheered you and your workmate up! I laughed when you said looks like a tracor had ran you over (wasn't one of ours lol) I am a weird combo of a worrier but an optimist. Anyway I had a smile on my face with this post. Take care and hope you are having a great week end Shazxx Must admit I felt hot just looking at this jumper x

    1. Hi, Shaz! Being silly with my outfits gives me a mental boost, for sure. I'm glad this post cheered you, my worrier/optimist friend. Yeah, it was a hot top. Not as many layers next time!

  10. That "Roadkill" top is something I would wear! I have a couple of bulk tops like that that will only fit under one particular coat. Definitely a good outfit for a week of discombubulation. This week felt very long for me at work despite the holiday Monday.

    1. It was a lot of fun, Shelley, but yes, a pain to fit under a coat. It did feel like a long week!

  11. Roadkill and sequins! Utterly brilliant, no wonder you cheered yourself and your colleague up.
Here's to a better, less discombobulated week ahead. We're expecting a "Roadmap out of Covid" announcement later, I may be the wprld's biggest optimist but I don't expect any significant changes - but I have a bottle of wine ready - even the weather report is exciting these days! xxx

    1. It was fun, at least, Vix! Yes, here's to a less discombobulated week! Good luck - if only our country would get its act together and get vaccines out to the general population! We're stuck, it seems. Fingers crossed for you!

  12. Your 'roadkill' outfit is brilliant. I love the faux fur run by the tractor so much and pairing it with a sequin skirt was a stroke of genius.
I would call myself an optimistic pessimist. I often see the dark side of things and I hate that I'm usually right about it, but I always keep my sense of humour. I'm told I can be quite funny.

    1. Thanks, Ivana! I like the mix of sequins and the funny faux fur.

I like that: optimistic pessimist. I am also quite funny in person!

  13. Sweet Shelia, I was struck by the fact that you don't consider yourself to be an optimist. That is genuinely surprising. To me, you have a naturally optimistic quality and an inner radiance that conveys hope and positivity in spades - not to mention one of the most beautiful joie de vivres I've ever encountered. (Of course, though, you know yourself best and I fully believe you if you say you're not an optimistic.)

    1. I present an optimistic front, and I strive to be positive on the blog, Autumn, but yes, I'm so very much an Eeyore when it comes to doom and gloom. Every so often I let some of that out, but for the most part, I fake it till I make it. If one acts positive, one will eventually FEEL positive. It works...for a while.

Thank you for the kind words!

  15. Difficult item that Roadkill when it is hot, but needs a top underneath it. Still, it is a very lovely and unique piece.
I very much enjoyed the word discombobulated. So funny.
