Weekend Wrap-Up: Spooky Purple Brunch and Teah Flashback

Hello, my friends! Did you have a fun weekend? Ours was tinged with regret at the thought that we would have had a Hallowe'en costume party on Saturday, but instead, we did brunch and had Scary Movie Night with Nick and Casey. We watched "Hereditary", "Happy Death Day", and the original "Night of the Living Dead." Good times!

Getting ready to walk to Pluto's to meet Nick.
Aside from a wee bit of seasonal bling, L and I dress like this whenever we go out. No sense in saving your clothes "for special" or "for good." Now's as good a time as any, I say!
It was a lovely sunny day - just a tinge of crispness in the air.

  • Dress - Michael Kors, consignment; first seen here in February with all the purple
  • Boots - Truths Teah, Fluevog; last worn here in March for our Vampire Anniversary
  • Coat (below) - Le Chateau, thrifted; last seen here (2nd outfit) in February 2019 to Urbanite at the Art Gallery

I built my outfit around my sparkly purple Hallowe'en mask (never thought I'd say that!).
My purple sweater dress was perfect!
A funky pair of tights for a slightly spider-webby look.
I have a camisole on under the dress for extra warmth.

Outerwear and mask. I billowed and swooshed dramatically as I walked around town.
This lovely satin duster coat is a Le Chateau piece, likely from the late 90s/early 00s. I was so sad to hear last week that they are shuttering their doors after 60 years in business in Canada, due to COVID. Story here

I remember visiting their flagship store in Montreal in 1983-84 on a school trip, and there was a Le Chateau in Pacific Centre Mall in downtown Vancouver that I was in awe of. When Victoria got a store in Mayfair Mall around 1985 I remember being SO EXCITED. Le Chateau is where you got all your classic 80s stuff: shiny satin suits (for men and women!), big shouldered jackets, bodycon dresses. If it was on the runway, it would be in Le Chateau within weeks. I remember nearly everything I bought from Le Chateau - their clothes were special, and most of them were made in Canada.
In the past decade or so, I stopped shopping there (I mostly shop second-hand now), although it was THE place to buy accessories or if you needed a party dress, and they kept a good percentage of their clothes made in-country. We stopped in there after brunch to see if there was anything we had to have (our local downtown store will be closing soon), but nothing really appealed. I still see great quality stuff by them in consignment and thrift stores, but they will be missed.

The stuff:
I've not even had these boots for two full years, but we'll have a wee Flashback on them.

Black and purple bling:
My "fang" cuff, and a pair of earrings I'd forgotten about - they were in my Jewelry Archives, but match a ring I wear regularly, so I pulled them out.

  • Cuff - Alexis Bittar, consignment
  • Ring - vintage mall
  • Silver/amethyst earrings - gift from Dad, c. 1985

I'd intended on keeping my outfit on for Scary Movie Night, but then I got chilly and bundled up in my home-clothes.
Boot detail, and silver cuff and ring.

  • Cuff - Karen's
  • Silver/gold/amethyst ring - gift from Dad, c. 1985

I popped into Lazy Susan's and couldn't resist this sparkly orange spider mask.
No need to save this for Hallowe'en only! It was $12.00.

Flashback: Truths Teah, Fluevog

I bought these boots here in January 2019 - my bosses at work gave me a gift card, so it was burning a hole in my pocket. These are called the Truths Teah, and were originally $749.00 - I stalked them until they were marked down and then applied my gift card, so I ended up paying $299 for them. Fluevogs ain't cheap, but they are great quality and have amazing details.
These are black, with brushed silver on them, plus oodles of hardware all over. They're very steampunk-ish (they remind me of armour) and have a dressier vibe than my other black boots. I have two other pairs of shoes in the Truth Family (my Pilgrims, which have been featured in a Flashback (here), and my Makenas (as seen here)), so knew they'd be great for walking.

I wore them in January 2019 with Monster Vest. I'm going to have to get another Monster Vest, I think - I really love seeing it in these Flashbacks, and my hot flashes are not as bad as they used to be (she said, talking herself into shopping).
And jeans! I loved that ruffled silk Armani blouse, but it did not love me - I gave it to a coworker.

I love this outfit from February 2019 - I wore this to Urbanite at the Art Gallery.
I painted up my face, wore my fuzzy top-hat and added a bunch of steampunk accessories to my Kenzo dress. So fun!

A simple outfit in February 2019 for walking to the pub for Valentine's Day dinner with L.
"And me, your hungry kitty."

Vizzini did not go to the pub with us.

This was a shopping/brunch outfit in October 2019.
My usual matchy colours and mixed patterns.

This was a work outfit, in December 2019.
I still have my "finned" skirt, but I let go of the teddy sweater.

I wore the boots to dinner with my family to celebrate my brother Dave's 50th birthday in January 2020.
The buckles and gewgaws on the boots snagged horrifically on the knit vest - so bad, that I nearly tossed the vest but I was able to fix it/tidy it up.

And here's the last time I wore them, in March 2020, for our 23rd wedding anniversary, which as we all know, is the Vampire Anniversary (check it out here for our hilarious shenanigans at the Castle).
"There are people out there?"

Vizzini is always included in our shenanigans!

Mathy stuff: I'm far from done with these boots - they have barely started in my wardrobe, and I only wear them in the fall/winter months - but including the current outfit, I've still worn them 8 times, which brings my cost per wear down to a decent $37.38. We'll check in on these in a few years and see how I'm doing then.

  1. We did have a great weekend! This was my grandson's first birthday and we had a small family bubble party for him.

Sweater dresses are wonderful things. So comfortable and warm and you can dress them up or down as you please. Your boots are, as all your boots, amazing.

    1. Aw, that's awesome that you were able to celebrate your grandson's birthday with your small bubble, Nana!

I adore them, but only if they don't cling in the wrong places! Thank you!

  2. It's nice you got to spend time with friends even if you didn't have your annual party! I have a friend overseas who does legendary Halloween parties - I reached out to her to check she was hanging in there okay with all the restrictions meaning she couldn't do it this year :( Once all this is over I expect we will celebrate in much bigger ways than we did before!

You wear those boots so well and I'm confident you will continue to do so in years to come :)

    1. Yes, I'm really happy that we were able to do Scary Movie Night. I would definitely like to have a big party again - I miss them so much, seeing all of our friends. You're right: once we can party again, it's going to be BIG parties!

Thank you, Mica, I agree! :)

  3. We heard this weekend we will be back in full lockdown from Thursday.
I find the best way through this is to create my own little safe space doing lots of things I enjoy and reaching out to my friends and family through technology and counting my blessings that we can do this.
I have a friend in her 70s who is poorly with the virus at the moment so it has hit home and reminded me what we need to do to get through.
    Take care. X

    1. Oh, gosh, that's scary stuff, Jane. Yes, reaching out when we can, and using our technology to see our friends and loved ones has been great.

Aw, that's so rough. I hope your friend pulls through!

  6. Fab outfit - love a sweater dress and the boots are truly gorgeous! Think the tights added that je ne sais quoi to the whole outfit; swishy coat and all.

Have you ever taken Vizzini out? I'm trying to imaging him on a lead. I guess he'd try to eat it!!

    Take care

    1. Thanks, Vronni, same here - sweater dresses are the best! I loved the funky vibe that the tights added.

No, he's never been outside. We don't want to risk him getting fleas, and he's startled very easily and it would kill me if he bolted and got lost. I can't even think about it.

  7. My ex-boyfriend and I used to host scary movie nights at Hallowe'en before it was a thing here. I used to trawl the shops in search of suitable decoration, only ending up with a couple of measly garlands of ghosts and bats :-) It might not have made up completely for missing out on a party, but I'm sure a good time was had by all!
You and L. are both dressed to the nines - you guys rock! - and you building the outfit around your mask made me giggle. Who would have thought! Mind you, it will probably only be a matter of time until I do the same. I recently bought matching mask and tights!
That satin duster is magnificent, and I can just see you billowing and swooshing in my mind's eye! I enjoyed the wee flashback on the boots, and what a gorgeous mask to add to your collection! xxx

    1. Oh, how fun, Ann! I didn't bother decorating the office or home this year. Hopefully we can do a party next year!

We love getting dressed up, even if it's just for brunch. I know, we'll all have matching masks! I love that you have matchy tights!

Thank you - it's too tight to do up right now, but it's still a magnificent piece.

  8. Oh you celebrated Halloween good. Did you have a lot of candy with it? For me, watching horror movies aren't complete with a lot of candy. And then I eat till I don't want any candy anymore for a looooong time. What a amazing boots!!

    1. We did - I ate a LOT of candy and felt rather ill the next day. I'll finish it up tonight/tomorrow and then it will be GONE.

      Thanks! I love these boots!

  9. Your blog is making me happy in these strange days. I used to love Le Chateau in the 80s! They had a store a short walk from where I worked and I would run over there at lunch. I think I got a couple of things there that were real workhorses for going out to clubs on the weekends! Keep posting, thank you!

    1. Aw, what a lovely thing to say, ramona! Thank you! Le Chateau was easily my favourite store in the mall - so many great club clothes.

I will keep posting (I've been going since 2008, so may as well keep on), thanks.

  10. Lovely attitude, dear Sheila, totally agree about not saving your clothes 'for special'. We can create our own special moments, every day! and wear fab clothes!
Love that you're matching your outfit to your mask, I think that considering masks as another accessory makes a difference. Let's do it in style!
Those boots are gorgeus, love all the details, and how they match your jewellery (you are Brilliant!).

Yup, masks are going to be de rigeur in fashion going forward, I'm sure.

      Aw, so sweet, thank you!

    1. Thanks so much, Vix! We love going out together, in our dressy style. It was so nice to have people over for movies - we've really missed the interaction. Can't wait to have that party!

The dress is a deep purple - does it look blue to you? I love pieces that are special - they're the keepers!

  12. I love your purple dress! It suits you perfectly too. It's quite interesting to have to make an outfit match a face mask, isn't it? But it's better to stay safe in style. :)
