Pink Pleats and Plaid, Plus Slides Flashback

It felt odd to be up so early after 4.5 days off. It was nice to put "real" clothes on again, but apparently, I was so discombobulated that I completely spaced on taking my "stair pose" picture this morning! I blame Vizzini - he was very distracting.
"Get with the program, Woman."

I had to sneak in a wearing of this spring/summer only skirt that I bought yesterday. Only a few weeks left in my warm-season clothes!
  • Jacket - Marc Cain, consignment; last seen here in July with blush ruffles
  • Sweater - Talbots, thrifted; last worn here with many reds in August
  • Skirt - Wilfred, consignment; purchased here yesterday for $32.99
  • Shoes - Zara, consignment, Vancouver; last seen here in July 2019 with shades of blues

I was going to wear my two-tone blue Fluevogs (these ones) with this outfit but I looked at these satin slides and thought, "I should wear these at least once this season."
And...I'm reconsidering. The other shoes would have been better.

But no time like the present! Life is short, wear the shoes.
I liked the rest of the outfit, although I think all that white needs something to break up the expanse, like a long necklace instead of the short one. Eh, live and learn. I'm just full of cliches today.

Another wearing of this lovely plaid jacket. It'll be packed away for fall...probably. I have to see all my fall/winter jackets and then decide. I only have so many hangers!
I really enjoyed this lovely swooshy pink pleated skirt on its inaugural wearing - I even swooshed it at my Vancouver coworker during our Teams meeting this morning! It's most definitely [edit] NOT a fall/winter weight and colour, so this is likely its only wearing until next March/April.

Masked up.
At least the shoes match.

The stuff:
I am looking at these shoes and I don't like them. Nope, not at all. We'll do a quick Flashback on them below, and then I'm chucking them into the giveaway pile.

Blue bling:
I added the brooch to the collection of embroidery already on the jacket, but it just snagged the weave.

  • Brooch - vintage 60s, vintage fair
  • Necklace/earrings - Sherman, vintage 60s, thrifted
  • Lapis lazuli ring/Fulvia Ring - Wendy Brandes

I managed to grab this squirmy little monster for some forced lovin' - hence the missing stair picture.
"This is so undignified."

I can't help it. Cuddles must be had!

Flashback: Zara Blue Satin Slides

I bought them on holiday in Vancouver in 2019 (here) for $28.99 at a consignment store, and there is really nothing wrong with them. They are an awesome colour! Fabulous shiny satin!
But ugh, they are ugly shoes. I loathe backless shoes: mules, slides, clogs - you will rarely see me in slingbacks, even. Mark these down as a bad purchase, and let's see how the math shakes down, shall we?

I first wore them in April 2019 with the new-to-me silver jewelry that I'd also picked up on the Vancouver trip.
They look...fine. They are better with pants than with skirts. Hello, Vizzini!

I will admit, I love all these colours together in this outfit from June 2019.
The blue shoes and belt really work well with the outfit. The shoes look okay with this because the long pants hide the horrid empty back.

I tried them again in June 2019 with a casual denim top and silk skirt.
This was not a bad outfit, but I know I have other shoes that would look better.

And lastly, I wore them here in July 2019.
I haven't worn those culottes or that blouse yet this summer. Is my brief love affair with baby blue drawing to an end?

Mathy stuff: Having only worn these 5 times in one year, the cost-per-wear is a pathetic $7.80. Off to the giveaway pile they go, and hopefully someone else will get more wear out of them than me!

  1. Morning Sheila, now what I like about you is your honesty! lol I love how you admit a purchase mistake. I have made many and I was wondering how you feel. I am not an "artist of clothes" like you so I always feel guilty. I have given so much to the "chazzas" though (thrift shops) and to be fair most of my stuff is second hand anyway. Just interested in your take? My favourite was with the denim top. Really admiring the blue bling you have such lovely pieces Have a great day Shazxx

    1. Hey, Shaz! Yup, I do make mistakes, and I generally own up to them, either by saying so on the blog, or by just shuffling those items off to the great giveaway pile. I review them, think about my mindset when I bought (was I feeling stressed? wanting just to BUY something? did I get carried away by a deal/trend/colour/other?). I am also still learning!

      Thanks, Shaz!

  2. That pink skirt is such a sweet thing, the jacket is perfect with it.
I'm with you on backless shoes, slingbacks especially. I've got one pair of backless clogs which I only wear around the house, there's something weird and unfinished about them. isn't there? xxx

    1. Isn't it sweet? I love the colour. I am okay with slingbacks sometimes, but ugh, I should have learned my lesson by now. They do not look finished, you're right!

  3. Hi Sheila,
Agree with you about the shoes. Almost better as house slippers because they have zero foot support for when out and about.
My approach to clothing or shoe purchases that wind up being duds is like water over a dam (continuing your cliche vein ;)) once the money has been spent, it’s over and done with so no fretting about it.
Agree with Shazxx about the blue bling, it glistens! Makes me smile :)
    Cheers, Laurie

    1. It's not so much the lack of support as it is the ugliness, Laurie. I just don't find them attractive. Yes, agreed. I think many people get stuck in the "sunk costs fallacy" where they feel like they have to keep trying because they spent the money.

Glistening blue bling is the best! Sparkly!

  4. I think that you're right to let those satin slides go. Something about the shape makes me think of large blue croissants, and that's not a good look in a shoe! I love the outfits that you wore the slides with, though.
I like that pale blue ruffled blouse on you too, so do try to give it another go before your closet swap over or deciding to ditch it. Helen

  5. The pink pleated skirt is gorgeous, and it looks wonderful teamed with the tweed jacket. I agree about the white top being a bit plain on its own, and that a long statement necklace would have improved it. I'm also with you and most of the other commentors about the shoes. Personally, I couldn't wear this type of backless, slipper-style shoes, as they would do my back in. I love seeing their short flashback, though. My favourite is the colourful outfit from June 2019. Your enforced cuddle with Vizzini made me chuckle. I did the same with Phoebe earlier today! xxx

    1. Thank you, Ann! Yeah, I didn't test-drive the outfit, but eh, I just move on. I don't mind lack of support (my feet are tough), but they are just so ugly.

Forced cuddlin' is the best! Kitties love it! Heh.

  6. I have trouble with backless shoes too. The flapping! Ugh. I love the color though!
That's a great skirt. I recently got a pleated skirt myself after not having had one for ages and I forgot how excellent the swoosh is. I feel like that shade of pink is one that is surprisingly versatile too.

    1. Yes, not a fan of flapping unless it's sleeves or a skirt, hee hee. Thanks, Ashley! I love swooshy pleats! So fun!

  7. I think the shoes are really cute as I love pointy shoes, however, I imagine they are not the best shoe option because they offer no support. It is good to get rid of things when we don't feel them.I do like your styling of the day. The other outfits you shared are lovely.I love the one with the culottes.

    1. I love pointy toes too - if these were boots, I'd be in heaven. I'm not bothered by the lack of support, but it's time for these to go. I have better shoes. Thanks, Ivana!

  10. I love that jacket and the skirt together, it's a shame you aren't loving the shoes, they are a fun statement piece but if you're not feeling them it's best to let them go. it's good you tried a different style even if it's not one you normally like - I need to be a bit more adventurous and try new things more often! :)

  12. I love the satin slides- they look so pretty and decadent! Favourite item is that teal floral jacket- really lovely! The new skirt is pretty cute and I love to see your matching of masks!
It's good to realise that clothes don't work for us. I think sometimes it's hard to avoid as you don't know what it feels like to wear certain garments for a long time and they just don't work for us! I've bought countless things that I HATE how they fit around the armpits, or are loose in certain places and tight in others, or the material irritates my skin OR somehow, it's never the weather for that item. It's easier to discard with less guilt if it was bought second hand in the first place but I HATE parting with a new item I paid a lot for but sometimes, it just doesn't work out!

    1. Thanks, Kezzie - I think you are the only person who likes them here. :)

I don't worry too much about letting go of things that don't work, no matter what I've paid, although it is harder when I've paid retail for something. It's often hard to tell until you wear things. I know I make up for those mistakes elsewhere.

  13. The skirt makes an appearance! It looks very cute. And I envy that jewellery set. (Diamante FTW!)

Could you add ribbons to the shoes to create ballet-style ties? Or is it better just to set them free to find a home where they're loved?

    1. Thanks, Mim! Diamante? Those are genuine Swarovski crystals that Sherman used! That's why that name means $$$ when you see them in stores/vintage fairs.

I cannot be bothered, especially since it would not change the shoes to something that I find attractive. Letting them go!
