Bigass Weekend Wrap-Up: Castle Chill-Out; Cat Pictures; Distanced Mother's Day

Happy Mother's Day to all the moms out there!
My mom enjoying her butterfly-topped cupcake! She's so stylish in her spotted sunnies (Kate Spade) and her 60s crystal necklace (a 21st birthday present from her Aunt Lil).

Backing up to Saturday, L and I met up with Yvonne and Randall for a distanced in-person meet-up. This is the new "normal" for seeing friends in Phase 2. "Few Faces, Bigger Spaces" is the goal.
We've had a beautifully hot weekend, with temps up to 28 degrees (woo! that's in the 80s for you US folks).

  • Cardigan - Wolford, thrifted; last worn here in August 2019 with a ginormous Marimekko-patterned skirt
  • Cami - not tracked
  • Skirt - See by Chloe, consignment; last seen here (2nd outfit) for a shopping trip in September 2019
  • Sandals - Sorel; last worn here (2nd outfit) for brunch and a light shop in August 2019

This cardigan is ballet-style, and wraps around with a tie in the back. It's silk and cotton, so it's excellent sunblock, although I wore regular sunblock too.
A nice big flowy skirt for lounging around.
It has micropleats on a paisley pattern in shades of dark green, yellow and white, and two layers for extra swooshiness.
 Showing the booties.

The stuff;
When L saw them, he said, "Oh, yay." He hates chunky-looking shoes. I loved having these back! So comfy!

Silver bling:
All very rattle-y. You could hear me coming.

  • Sterling silver necklace wire - Shi Studios
  • Sterling silver pendant/earrings - M&M, consignment, Vancouver
  • Steel cuff - thrifted
  • Silver engraved hinged cuff - vintage, thrifted, Powell River
  • Bangle - Lucky Susan's
  • Silver/aventurine ring - consignment
  • Jade/bronze ring - vintage 70s, Mom's

We strolled up to Craigdarroch Castle, hoping to avoid the hordes of others looking for some park area to hang out in.
L carried a blanket in his pack for us to lie on.

I posed on the stone bench on the way up.
And here's the castle!
Since it's a tourist attraction, there tends not to be too many locals around.

We had the back field mostly to ourselves.
There was a Tai Chi group on one side.
And some kids playing with their dogs on the other.
There's Randall and Yvonne! Hi, guys!

This beetle decided I was a worthy attraction.
Okay, move along now.

We chilled out for about an hour.
I made myself a daisy-chain crown while we chatted. It was so good to see people!

When we got home, Vizzini had barely moved.
"Someone has to watch the neighbourhood."

We spent the afternoon reading and listening to music.
"You're getting quite cat-like in your leisure time, Woman."

I also worked on an artsy project for a while, and then L and I set up for boardgames.
"I'm on the lookout for elastic bands."

He's very helpful. He plopped himself down on the carpet right next to my seat.
"It's a little TOO hot now. Please make it cooler."

He kept going out on the deck to get sun, and then coming back in to flop.
"Too warm!"

Finally, he settled down to watch the sunset.
"Cool breezes, come to me."

He also discovered that this wood bookshelf was a good spot to flop.
"I'm guarding the Man's CDs."

On Sunday, we were up early to take a taxi out to Mom's, both to visit for Mother's Day, and to wish her a Happy Birthday (it's tomorrow).
Of course, I saved my new-to-me dress for the occasion!

  • Dress - Part Two, consignment; purchased here for $49.99
  • Shoes - Leith, consignment; first worn here in February with burgundy ruffled sleeves

I did go bare-legged, but I also wore a full vintage slip under this, just for smoothing.
Five layers of this delightful toile pattern!
It was perfect and comfy - and an unusual cut for a jammy dress. I love this straight up-and-down column of ruffles.
I had planned on wearing little booties with this, but it was far too warm out for that.
I even took a fan and was so glad I did. HOT.

  • Fan - Barcelona, gift from Mom & Dad, c. 1996

I also carried my parasol to shade me.
I fully sunblocked my arms too.

  • Parasol - Chinatown

The stuff:
I love these pretty lilac metallic shoes. That high elastic keeps them on the foot (none of that nasty slapping noise when I walk). They aerated Mom's lawn really well too, as we walked around, ha ha!

Simple bling:
Colour-coordinated.

  • Earrings - thrifted
  • Pearl/gold ring - Erth, consignment
  • Onyx/silver ring - Tocarra, vintage fair
  • Lapis lazuli ring - Wendy Brandes

Mom and my nephew Matt had measured out and spray-painted the lawn around Mom's house into 2-meter sections, so that our chairs were the proper distance apart.
That's the cardigan that I gave Mom for Mother's Day. It's by Anne Carson, and has faux-leather detailing on the shoulders - I picked it up at Turnabout last week. Mom loved it. It's a perfect topper for summer.

My niece Sidney - she's nearly 11 and is taller than me!
My brother Dave.
 Matt's grown a full beard!
I almost didn't recognize him!

Mom got the cupcake with the butterfly on it.
Did you notice she's wearing a tiara?

I wonder where I get my FABULOUS genes from, hmmm? Ha!
Enjoy every bit of the icing, Mom! Happy Mother's Day!

Vizzini was so excited to have us home.
"Oh, were you out?"

I hope you all had a wonderful weekend! Thank you so much for stopping by!

  1. First I'm going to congratulate you on your weather; we had SNOW!

Your mom looks so pretty and happy and very deserving of a tiara! I wish her a very happy birthday :)

I just knew that tiered dress was going to be fabulous! It's a stunner for sure. The gladiator booties are the bomb in my opinion.

Castles and butterflies, cupcakes, tiaras and sunshine - sounds like the perfect day to me.

    1. Ack! Snow!!? I feel much more thankful for this hot weather, thanks, Nana!

Thank you for your kind words! My mom reads all the comments and will appreciate that.

I just love this dress, and did laugh at L's sour look when he saw them. It was a lovely weekend, thank you, Nana!

  2. happy birthday to your mum Sheila! :) it's so nice you were able to visit, and that the weather has been lovely to allow you all to sit outside and keep your distances :) We met my sister for a picnic on Saturday and it was beautiful weather - she picked something in between both our places as we were only allowed to travel 50ks then (although they lifted that on Sunday) and it was at an old training ground where she used to play sports - with sports not allowed we had 6 empty pitches to ourselves, it was glorious! :) The kids loved being able to run and not worry about staying away from people!

  3. Happy Birthday and Mother's Day to your mom! She looks like she had a fantastic time, and the tiara is perfect on her.
Your swooshy skirt is great with the ballet cardi, perfect for the hot weather. The new dress is beautiful, Sheila, a great buy.

    1. Thank you, and much appreciated, Juliana! It made Mom so happy that we were all able to come by and spend a couple of hours with her.

Thanks, I love having a collection of swooshy skirts and dresses for hot weather.

  4. Glorious weather for a glorious weekend!
That castle is gorgeous as is your lovely ruffly skirt and last week's incredible tiered dress. L's colourful outfit is pretty darned groovy, too. Doesn't it feel good to have bare legs and sandals? It's back to boots and tights here today, boo!
Sending your super cool Mum lots of Birthday love and best wishes for Mother's Day, she really is fabulous, just like her daughter!
Love that sunset photo of Vizzini! I bet he's missed you this weekend, our beasts have got rather used to us being at their beck and call lately.
    Have a fabulous Monday!
Few Faces, Bigger Spaces - love it! Why can't we have such sensible leaders? xxx

    1. We really lucked out with the weather, Vix! This is totally not typical for us here on the we(s)t coast! Thanks so much - I love all my ruffles. L's wearing ninja socks - he really pays attention to the details.

Aw, Mom will love that, thank you!

Vizzini's been pretty chill - he is a rather needy cat, so he likes having us around. It helps that we aren't there during the day (I'm home Tues and Thurs only), I'm sure.

Happy Monday to you! I know, I've been really pleased with how sensible everything has been.

  6. How lovely you got to see your mum on Mother's Day and for her birthday! Yay! And meet up with family and friends - I like that slogan 'fewer faces, bigger spaces'. We can now meet up with one other person not from our household in an open space...depends on the weather, really.

Loved the outfits especially the ruffles dress - how unusual and the lilac shoes were gorgeous with it.

What a floppy cat Vizzini is!
    Take care

    1. I know, it was so nice to be able to see her in person, and my brother and two of his kids too! We will be allowed to have another "bubble" of people in ours, but we have to consider who they interact with.

Thank you! I love that dress so much.

He is a very floppy cat! Thanks, Vronni!

  7. Few Faces, Bigger Spaces sounds lovely. Here, even with social distancing, we can only see 4 people, and it have to be the same 4 people, who cannot see anybody else either. Also, it is 4 people per family unit, so if you choose to see members of your family, you cannot see your in-laws, for instance, nor can your children see their friends. This is a new rule as from Saturday and it's so complicated I don't think anybody does it right. I love your socially distant gathering with Randall and Yvonne at the castle. And that is something else which we are not allowed to do. We cannot sit down in parks, and cannot sit on any benches! Not even when there's nobody else around! Love the outfit you wore for this outing, especially the flowy skirt. Not too keen on the beetle, though! That new to you dress looks absolutely gorgeous on you, and how lovely are that fan and parasol. Your family gathering for Mother's Day looks fabulous, and what a stylish lady your Mum is! Love the tiara! xxx

    1. It's a good idea, and helps remind us to keep our distance. Yes, we are getting that too, or something similar. They're referring to home groups (eg. me and L) as a "bubble" and are letting each bubble add another bubble, so another household group. Your rule does sound complicated. Not being able to sit spaced out on a piece of grass seems rather odd and arbitrary!

Thanks so much - I wasn't keen on the beetle either! I love the ruffled dress so much - I want to wear it again soon! Mom is very stylish, and she knows it! Ha! Thank you, Ann!

  8. How nice you were able to get in a family visit, even if you have to keep your distance. I haven't been able to visit my mother since all of this started as she lives in another city. I can't believe your weather! We have had snow off and on for the last few days, fortunately it doesn't stick around long, but it has been windy and cold too.

I love that "new to you" ruffled dress - it looks so cool on you!

Thanks, Shelley! I love that dress!

  9. That ballet style cardigan is so pretty. I need something like that in my life. I imagine it goes well with everything. I do like the maxi skirt you paired with it. The paisley pattern is so pretty. The shoes look very chic and comfy- always a good thing when you plan to do some walking. The castle you visited looks really interesting. How nice you got to hang out there, I imagine it was lovely. Your ruffled dress in layers is gorgeous. Makes me think of the Jazz era. The metallic heels are adorable as well. Such a great look. It is nice you were able to visit your family. I visited mine as well. It is ok to travel around the island again. Nice to meet more of your family members and your tall niece. I remember being eleven and being taller than some adults but I stopped growing then so soon I wasn't among the tall crown anymore. Being 5 foot 9, I'm practically the shortest among my female relatives on my mother's side. People are generally tall where I come from.

    1. That cardi was a really good find - Wolford is the company that makes really expensive tights, so finding a nice cardi by them for cheap was a score. Thanks so much, Ivana! Craigdarroch is not very big, but it's so pretty. I am vowing to actually GO there and pay to go in it once it's open again!

Yes, it felt very Jazz Era, good call! I'm glad you're able to travel around your Island Hvar again. I am definitely the shortest in my family at 5'4" - my brother is 6'3"!

  10. Your mum is stylish! I'm glad you got to see her and other relatives! It must have been so good to see them! I loved seeing my Mum and sister from the end of a drive 2 weeks ago.
Your outfits are gorgeous! The first one is my favourite- it's so wafty and princess-like- I love it!! I feel like I want you to do some dancing in it!
I have to say that that tiered dress is a triumph! You remind me of an oriental painting of some sort of Pagoda!

    1. It was so good to see them all, Kezzie. I'm glad we were able to be safe and visit.

  12. Okay, so I see horror on that board game! That interesting enough for me. What s it called exactly? Your mom looks fantastic and I love that she wears a tiara! How good is that! We try to see each weekend two friends, but only when it is warm enough to meet outside. It feeds the soul to talk to them and to see them! So important! How is Karen doing?

    1. That's our favourite game, "Arkham Horror," Nancy. It's no longer in print, unfortunately, but we love it.

Mom's a diva - I wonder where I get it from?? I'm glad you get to see your friends. Karen is getting radiation treatments, having her pleura tapped for fluid, and having some experimental hyper therapy (involves heating the body to kill cancer cells). It's not positive, though - she has cancer in her liver, and she's talked to the Assisted Dying folks, as she is concerned about loss of cognitive function if the cancer in her brain spreads. It's heartbreaking...

    Love the ruffled dress.

  16. Love your mom's gorgeous AB crystal necklace. Swoon!

And an epic swoon on over the castle. While I've been to Island as an adult, thus far I've only been twice (that I can recall) twice in my, both in childhood. I yearn to spend time there again and soak up its beguiling beauty + history at this stage in my life. Definitely a stop we'll be aiming to visit the next time we're in Victoria (whenever that may be).
