Jammy Dress and De-Oiled Boots

I am mentally gearing up for a really busy holiday season, kicking off this weekend. I don't feel like making exciting outfits, and you know what that means!
Jammy dress time! I tweaked the colour right out of the stair picture, as it was just sh*te. These dark mornings kill me.

  • Dress - Nanette Lepore, thrifted; last worn here in September for some vintage fair shopping
  • Boots - Coffee Kope Tiam, Fluevog; last seen here with a ball of sunshine in October
  • Coat (below) - Topshop, consignment; purchased here on the weekend for $35.00

Here we are, all in colour.

I knew that I'd be putting up the office Christmas tree today, and so I also needed something that wouldn't snag and would keep my arms covered from scratchy branches.

This dress is all kinds of comfy: it pulls on over the head, and the neck, waist and wrists are all smocked with elastic.
I love the high-low hem on it too. It is missing pockets, or it would be an A+. It's one of the few dresses in my closet that I kept out from the summer.

I layered this dark red vintage slip under it for extra warmth; you can see a bit of it peeking out two pictures above.
The slip is by Suzette Lingerie and it has a metal zipper on the side (it's a size 36), so I suspect it is from the 50s or early 60s. For a fun flashback, check out the first time I wore it, here in 2010 - nearly 10 years ago!

I had many compliments on this dress - Emily said it looked "very Ted" (as in Ted Baker).
I like the branch pattern on it; it looks modern and has lots of good colours for accessorizing. It was nice and cozy and just what I needed. And I did get the danged tree up and decorated!

Outerwear - I had to wear my new-to-me badass jacket today.
On the way home, I was so warm, I wore it open like this, even with the freezing rain pelting me in the face.

I did it up in the morning for my walk to work, and discovered that all that faux fur is like velvet on a larger scale.
I was pulling down my skirts all the way to work. Gah!

  • Gloves - Cejon, thrifted

The stuff:
The last time I wore these boots, I spilled oily dip on the toe (picture here and here), which left a big oily smear and a dark oil spot on the side. After sitting for approximately six weeks with cornstarch on them in my closet, I'm happy to say that every bit of the oil came out!

Brown bling:
I honestly thought these boots were ruined, and when I pulled them down last night and brushed the cornstarch off, I was amazed to see them so clean. I am so happy that it worked - they're de-oiled!

  • Belt - Club Monaco
  • Spinner ring - Twang & Pearl
  • Feather ring - Fossil, thrifted
  • Earrings - LA Express, c. 1994

The belt is a lovely embossed leather, and my earrings are rapidly becoming vintage (ack).

  2. that is such a great dress and it's a shame the jacket made the skirts ride up as it does look great with it!

The cornstarch tip is amazing - I thought you had to heat the leather (I used a hairdryer) then cover in cornstarch and rub in, I didn't realise you had to leave it in cornstarch for so long. I wonder if I could still rescue my burger greased clutch? It happened a while ago but it's not going to be used any time soon so I might go leave it in some cornstartch for a few weeks! Thank you!

    1. Can't win 'em all, Mica - it's that season too, where all the layers start rubbing together.

I did nothing other than putting a lot of cornstarch on the surface and letting the boots just sit there. I hope it works for you! Worth a shot, anyway! Good luck.

  3. That dress is perfect with the Toppers aviator jacket and the vintage slip, even in black and white it looks gorgeous.
I'm happy your corn starch trick worked on the boots, I've made a mental note to try that out if it ever happens to me! xxx

    1. Thanks so much, Vix! Ha, I figured I may as well go full B&W since the colour was so awful.

I am really happy it worked out - I'd hate to lose those boots.

  4. That's my kind of dress, and isn't that badass jacket perfect with it? I'm hearing you on the fake acting like velvet though! I'm loving that gorgeous vintage slip too. It's good to hear that your cornstarch trick worked on your boots, it would have been a shame to have to let them go. xxx

  7. Fab outfit; love that jacket! What a good idea about the cornstarch (cornflour to us); it's just patience that's needed!

  8. Cornstarch.. that is totally knew to me. Sounds like a very good tip.
I love this dress as much as you do. And the boots. And the new jacket. I am afraid you will have to wear the jacket with trousers to prevent riding up.
If I had to decorate the tree, I would have worn trousers, never a long dress. But so many people... so many differences.

PS I also commented on your post in which you wear the red lingerie dress for the first time.

    1. I was happy at how well it worked!

Thank you so much! Yes, agreed, I'll have to wear it with pants. Sigh.

I don't find trousers as comfy for being on my hands and knees or doing a lot of bending over - a skirt works better for that.

I saw that!! Thank you - what a blast from the past, hey?

  9. This dress looks amazing on you. The red vintage slip is so pretty. I have a few vintage slips my grandmother gave them. I sometimes layer them under dresses for warmth but also for appearance. Many dresses look neater with a slip under.

Back to the outfit! I love your heeled boots and the aviator jacket. You look fantastic.

  10. Cornstarch tip is genius! MUST try!!!! Your beautiful new coat is gorgeous!! I feel like I use the word Gorgeous too much to describe your sartorial choices- I need to branch out into my extensive vocabulary (which my husband says I fail to use despite being able to tell him what pretty much all the words he asks me mean!) to describe you!x

  11. woww, this dress is a stunning piece (I have a weakness for dark florals) and it looks even more stunning with the fab jacket, looking gorgeous, elegant with a twist of badassery!. Sorry that it was clingy!
Thanks for sharing your cornstarch tip, glad it worked!
