Brunch Firecracker and Cat (and Mom) Pictures

As with all good vacations, I'm quickly losing track of what day it is. But I did remember that L and I were meeting Mom for L's birthday lunch at Floyd's.
It's been swelteringly hot the past couple of days - between 29 and 32 degrees! Considering that folks here in Victoria often refer to this month as "June-uary", this is pretty rare for us.

  • Dress - JG Hook, thrifted; last worn here in May 2020 with metallic pink shoes
  • Shoes - Sol Sana; last seen here (3rd outfit) in December 2019 with a blue goddess gown

I refer to this as my Firecracker dress - the abstract floral pattern reminds me of bursts of fireworks.
The dress is 100% linen, with a built-in wrap and two big long ties for the waist - it zips up one side.
The skirt is almost a full circle.
The weird gap on my arm is due to the sleeves being an adjustable length. I like 'em long.
This is for you, Ann! My full red nylon vintage slip is layered underneath.
The heat's been aggravating my hot flashes. I need a fan!

Masked up - we still have to wear masks in public places.
L and I did some errands including my weekly grocery shop after brunch.
I had to do my Movie Star Wrap to keep my hair from spinning into snarls while cruising about in Vlad the Jaguar - it's convertible weather!

Accoutrements:
The hand-painted fan was a present from Mom and Dad on their trip to Spain in 1997, just before Dad died.

  • Fan - Spain, gift from Mom & Dad, 1997
  • Leather/cloth purse - Nine West, vintage, thrifted
  • Mask - Lazy Susan's
  • Scarf - thrifted

The stuff:
I knew I wouldn't have to do much walking/standing, so I pulled these down from a high shelf in my closet, stuck some new inserts in them and I was good to go. The soles inside tend to roll up on my heel and under my toes, and the insert prevents that.

Black bling:
The bangle was purchased with birthday money from Mom last year.

  • Lucite/crystal bangle - Alexis Bittar, consignment, Sidney
  • Earrings - thrifted
  • Lapis lazuli ring - Wendy Brandes
  • Silver/onyx ring - Toccara, vintage fair

And now, as promised, cat pictures.
"What? I'm sleeping here."

Vizzini is just a Puddle of Cat in this weather.
"I am just going to lie here."

He moves to the tiles to get a bit of sun and/or cool off.
"A bit of both, I think."

He's just a lump.
"I resemble that remark."

Yup, you do!

Our Provincial Health Officer gave the "okay" to hugging close friends and relatives. I haven't hugged Mom since February 2020, sixteen months ago.
I really missed it, can you tell? Check it out, Mom wore a linen multi-coloured dress too! We were totally on the same wavelength.

L took a couple of pics of us at Floyd's where we enjoyed our old favourites (mmm...leftover jalapeno mac & cheese for later!).
So good to see you and be able to give you a big hug again, Mom.

Vizzini, how about a hug from you?
"Busy sleeping, Woman."

Fine, it's too hot to deal with all that fur, anyway!

I hope you're all having a good week! Thanks so much for dropping by!

You look so good in your headscarf, you and L must look so glam gadding about in Vlad with his top off!
Vizzini loves the sun as much as I do! We're sharing weather. xxx

  6. Oof, no idea why my PS posted twice. 🥴 In any case, wanted to share that I like your outfit so much that I did a search and found the same brand and style on Etsy, though in a different color scheme. Didn’t purchase because not my colors but was psyched to realize the possibilities!

  8. It looks like we have been sharing weather, although here, thankfully, temperatures only reached the high 20s. Your aptly named firecracker dress was the perfect choice for a meet-up in such hot weather. Again, this is one of my favourites of yours. And, oh! Thank you for the peek of that divine vintage slip! And thank you too for reminding me to carry a fan. I'd quite forgotten about them, so I'll seek them out right after I've finished commenting.
Always lovely to see pictures of Vizzini, and even better to see that picture of you and your lovely Mum. I can't imagine not having been able to hug my Mum for so long. I've got a feeling that both she and my Dad wouldn't have coped very well with the Covid situation ... xxx

    1. This is pretty typical spring for us - hot and cold, warm and windy, sunny and rainy. We get it all. Thanks so much, Ann! It's one of my faves too - and I remembered the slip this time! I love my fan in really hot weather.

It's been great that we've opened things up again to this point. Aw, I'm sure they would have been all right.

  10. Tearing up at the sixteen month wait for a hug from/for your mom! Seeing you finally get to have hugs just made my day! We were just informed by the retirement residence that my 89 year old dad lives in, that he is now allowed to come out and that we can see him. For me the last time we were allowed to visit was last October. Not as bad as sixteen months but I'm itching to hug my dad.

And I do love your firecracker dress! It seems appropriately celebratory :)

    1. We both teared up, Nana - it really hit home that 16 months is a LONG time. Oh, I'm so glad you'll be able to see (and hopefully hug) your Dad again soon!

      Thank you!

  11. Glad you were able to hug your Mom. Things will start to open back up here this coming weekend after a two month stay at home order. I have had intense cabin fever for the past month or so and can't wait to go somewhere other than the grocery store.

  12. My stars do I love that dress! It embodies so much of what I love about mid-century frocks, yet feels fabulously contemporary at the same time.

The mercury got a touch overeager here in early June as well, with the hottest day so far this month (and year) reaching 35C. It's not uncommon to climb up near 40C during the dog days, but for the first week of June, that was definitely a roasty-toasty surprise! Things have, for the most part, mellowed a bit since then - complete with a brief thunder storm this evening.

Big hugs & the loveliest of wishes for these final days of spring coming your way.

Oh wow, that is WARM! It's been all over the place here: cloudy one day, hot the next, the usual Victoria thing.
