Birthday Week: Confetti, Velvet and Barbie Pink

Yay! Happy Birthday to me! Another trip around the sun complete.
I woke up in a funk this morning, just not feeling super happy or excited about my birthday. This outfit is a classic "fake it till you feel it" one. It still features some of my favourite things, though.

  • Sweater - Divided by H&M, consignment; purchased here for $...oops, I forgot to record it! Not much - it was half price, and I would not have paid over $15.00 for it.
  • Turtleneck (underneath) - Jacob, thrifted; last seen here (2nd outfit) in March for a brief outfit
  • Skirt - Yves St. Laurent Rive Gauche, vintage 80s, thrifted; last worn here in January with double velvet
  • Shoes - Arnold Churgin, thrifted; last seen here in August with fabulous floral
  • Coat (below) - Desigual; last worn here (3rd outfit) in December 2018 for a play at the Belfry with Mom

This sweater is very cool in person (close-up pic of the texture here). It's black with a confetti-like texture of blue, gold and hot pink mylar "hairs" and is VERY sparkly under my office's lights.
The skirt is also reading as black, but it's a kitten-soft dark purple velvet (and Yves St. Laurent, so classy!).

I grumped around work a bit in the morning, feeling a bit sorry for myself. I finally gave myself a stern talking-to.
"Sheila, tell people it's your birthday! They will want to give you hugs and show you affection and wish you a happy birthday! You will feel better!"

And it's true. Once I told a few people, it got around the office, and my coworkers kept coming up to me and wishing me a happy birthday and giving me (consensual) hugs. It was awesome.
I felt much less grumpy and much more loved. I even told the security guard and the Purolator guy.

Birthdays aren't always just for me; they're also an opportunity for people in my life to express that I'm important to them.

But I digress. In addition to the awesome skirt I'm wearing (did you note the giant pockets above?), I wore one of my favourite coats, this gorgeous Desigual beauty.
Y'all are going to have to forgive my crappy morning light - 'tis not the season for great indoor pictures. It's almost dark out when I take these.

Done up - I have a peacock on me.
Purple gloves were all I needed - there was frost on the ground this morning.

I like the boucle (boo-clay!) design on the top of the back.
Groovy! I bought this coat in 2011 to celebrate getting the job I'm in now. I still love it.

The stuff:
My Barbie pink shoes are also much loved by me. Comfy too!

Multicolour bling:
I loved this fun necklace!

  • Necklace - thrifted - first wearing, purchased here for $10.00
  • Earrings - thrifted
  • Lapis lazuli ring/Fulvia Ring - Wendy Brandes

A few presents from my wonderful colleagues, including a shoe gift certificate from the 3 VPs.
Thank you all for your birthday wishes! I'm off for dinner at the pub with L.

    1. Thank you, Dar! Agreed, the necklace and shoes are the standouts - I'm not keeping the sweater, though. I have better ones.

Thanks! I didn't really like the sweater, but I love the necklace and shoes, and will likely wear them together again.

  4. I get it. I'm often grumpy and fail to realize that we need to prompt others to be nice to us. Give them a reason to reach out. Love love love these heels.

    1. I tend to turn inward when I'm feeling down - when I ask for external help, it always surprises me how many people want to reach out.

      Me too! So PINK.

  6. Happy, happy birthday, I guess a day late! Great idea to wear some favorite things to cheer yourself along, and an even better idea to remind your co-workers. All of your faithful readers, your friends, and your co-workers are indeed very delighted that you were born, wonderful Sheila! What would we do without you? You make a wonderful, unique contribution to our world.

I used to hate my birthday at work, because it fell right as the school year was near to starting. In fact, the worst was two years ago when I turned 60, and it was the day before school started. Everyone was frantically finishing getting things ready for the students to arrive the next day. Only one person remembered it was my birthday, and I didn't have the heart to remind anyone myself. Since I retired at the end of last school year, I had a way funner birthday this year, up in Oregon with my family and friends for once. Maybe that will be an annual thing now.

    1. Thank you so much, Linda! Aw, that is so very sweet of you - validation is important, isn't it?

Ugh, having a birthday anywhere around a major event, whether that's a holiday or unofficial event like school starting, is so awful. I'm really glad you had a good birthday this year, and I hope you make it a regular thing! You need to celebrate you!

  8. A perfect birthday outfit, Sheila! I just love how the H&M sweater and your new-to-you necklace compliment each other. As for the Desigual coat, there are no words to describe its fabulousness. I do get your birthday blues, as I'm prone to suffer from it too. Birthday hugs and that wonderful Embrace Peculiarity card would have made my day too. Sending you a big post-birthday hug from Belgium xxx

    1. Thanks, Ann! I'm not feeling the sweater, so it's moved to the giveaway pile. The fit, colour, quality...none of those are there, and the fun sparkly bits don't tip the scales in its favour. I love the Desigual coat too.

Thank you, I knew you'd get how I've been feeling. Hugs accepted!

  13. Sending you a consensual hug for your Birthday. I sometimes feel like that on my birthday - it denotes another passing year, and I ask myself "what did you accomplish this year"? If I can't come up with anything good, it leaves me feeling a bit sorry for myself. However, I tell myself what Cher's character said to Nicolas Cage's character in Moon Struck - "SNAP OUT OF IT"!
