Sparkle Week! Textural Sparkle

Welcome to Sparkle Week! My company's doing Jeans Week, but I don't do jeans (unless they are high-waisted vintage Versace mom-jeans!). But I do sparkle!
Today's outfit is all about texture, because a harmonious combination of textures can create a festive mood just as well as piling on the bling. Speaking of bling - here's a game. Guess how many pieces of bling I'm wearing today (not shoes, just jewelry, earrings count as one not two)! Answer below.

  • Top - Gorgeous, thrifted; first worn here with the Amazing Bark Skirt in October
  • Skirt - Precis Petites (bottom of a suit); last seen here in January
  • Shoes - Big Presence Desmond, Fluevog; last worn here in November with leather pants
  • Coat (below) - Hilary Radley, thrifted

I really liked the curve-conscious look of this outfit and felt awesome in it all day. The top is a lovely brocade covered in roses, and the trim around the neckline is dark green rabbit fur.

The skirt is a silk and wool tweed (very soft). I love the pencil cut and the slightly longer length.
Some sort of rucking-up business going on back there - the top does up with a hidden zipper up the back, so that's probably catching on my skirt waistband.

Warm outerwear! Woo, it was cold today!
My Danier Leather set of champagne-coloured leather gloves, fur toque and scarf keeps me snuggly warm.

The stuff:
My shiny, fabulous copper shoes give just a bit of shine on the bottom of the outfit.

Nine pieces of bling:
Two fur pinks at the neckline of the top, two bracelets/cuffs per wrist, a big ring per hand and sparkly earrings. Did you guess right? It doesn't look like I'm wearing that much, does it?

  • Mink pin - thrifted
  • Rabbit stick pin - thrifted
  • Copper cuff - Renoir, vintage 60s, Grandma J's
  • Copper bracelet - vintage 60s, vintage fair
  • Floral metal/stone cuff - consignment
  • Chain/leather bracelet - thrifted
  • Green stone ring - consignment
  • Amber ring - late 90s

Earrings - Weiss, vintage 60s, vintage fair

  1. Okay, here's another lesson from the Advanced Class. I kinda grasp the idea but need to learn more to fully understand it. I know how much attention to give to textures of clothes which is smart because they have such an important effect on how we perceive outfits. I hope I get to learn more about this.

    1. The "What Not to Wear" rule was "colour-pattern-texture-shine" - to go for all of those things in an outfit (including accessories) to make an outfit visually appealing. So when a colour appeals to you, look for that colour with an interesting texture (2 in one!). Just keep experimenting!

  2. You look absolutely gorgeous! I love this shirt and the combination with the skirt and shoes is divine. I really appreciate that you take the honest picture (shirt pushing up in back) and explain it. This is real life.

  4. I guessed ten. WRONG. Hahaha. Striking, Sheila. I love that you do this during JEANS WEEK too. I wanna see those sequin Versace mom jeans. Hahaha!! This outfit is like a decadent dessert. All the pieces are just so inviting. And best of all is having a smashing coat that doesn't wuss out on real-life COLD. Minus 4C as I write... ???!!!

    1. It's 10 if you count the earrings as two. :) I know, fie on jeans! So boring. I will drag out the mom jeans again soon - they are not comfy for sitting in! Also, yes, what is up with this cold weather??

  5. I love this outfit on you, Sheila. Yes, you're right about the curves - lovely! It's a really, elegant, sophisticated, with a bit of fun (fur pins) look. Such gorgeous shoes and I'm in love with the top - with green rabbit fur!! Amazing.Or as my daughter (38)would say 'amazeballs'!

I totally get the texture thing. I've realised that to add interest to an outfit it's a good idea to add texture or pattern on one of the items and, it's even better if that item is both textured and patterned; as here in this gorgeous orange top.

I'm trying to work out how to add a bit of sparkle to tomorrow's outfit so I can play along...

    1. Thank you, Veronica! Ha, yes, amazeballs! I pretty much won't buy anything that doesn't have a nice texture. It can really elevate a simple piece so much. Yay, sparkle away, my dear!

  6. A stunner, I am guessing that because it´s jeans week at work - you are currently the best dressed person in your office. Although I have a feeling you probably are anyways.

  8. Fabulous Sheila!
Why wear denim when you can wear this! I adore the top and fur pins! The color and texture of each piece is so lovely! Great gold shoes, and you know I LOVE that coat,
You are the very best thrifter!
I guessed 11, by the way... and no, NOT too much- just right !

    1. I totally agree - denim is so dull in comparison. A lot of bling doesn't always look like a lot, right? Thanks so much, Elle!

  10. Yay for sparkle week! I adore this orange brocade top Sheila and think you've played it perfectly with that classy skirt. The fit of both of these are just made-to-measure perfect which is indeed amazeballs. And those copper shoes finish the whole look off with such a flourish, hurrah. I'm wordering where you'll take this sparkle fest to next?
