Mellow Weekend Wrap-Up: Leather and Visible Tentacles, Feathers Ahoy and Monsieur Vizzini Strikes a Pose

Ah. I'm ready for another weekend, please and thank you. Let's just continue on this nice, mellow pace.
Brunch and Christmas shopping outfit.

  • Sweater - Banana Republic, thrifted; last seen here (2nd outfit) in early November
  • Dress (layered) - Truly by Part Two; last worn here in September with mod orange and purple
  • Boots - Doc Martens, consignment; last worn here on the same weekend in November as this sweater, with the same coat (below)

Saturday was blustery and rainy (pretty typical for this time of year), so I layered up leather, sweater and tights (and I have very attractive white sport socks on under those floral boots) to stay warm.
I headed off after brunch with L to go (finally) start my Christmas shopping. I've been remiss this year in shopping early.

This is how most people saw me.
"Wah! Behold the Tentacle Coat!"
As always, this coat inspires either love or hate. There is no in-between. Since it was so windy, I figured this was the perfect coat to wave about wildly, heh.

The stuff:
Perfect boots for slogging all over town. I am nearly done shopping now - just a few things for L and Mom and my extended family, and then...I have to wrap it all. Dammit.

  • Earrings - local

Um, I might have bought something for myself.
"What is this bird? I must bite it!"
Seriously, if you saw this hanging on the end of a rack and it was your size, wouldn't you try it on?
Great Peach Ruched Feathered Dress, that is an amazing thing! And it's killer on. I have a party to go to this coming weekend and you can bet this is going to be worn!

The name rang a bell, but I had to look it up when I got home. Lillie Rubin used to specialize in formal wear and party dresses. From this label, this is from probably the late 80s - but it's after the Great Size Shift, since this is not a modern size 4, but an accurate size 8.
For only $42.00? Made in the US? That would have been $200+ back then for something this nice! The feathers are in wonderful condition, as is the dress overall - I was a little shocked to find out it was actually vintage.

I also spotted these two silk and cotton obis for $1.00 each.
Anyone remember this belt? I used to own it in the early days of my blog, but in a size large. I ended up giving it away because it was too big. This one is a size small and was marked at $6.00 but pink tags were half price, so for $3.00 it once again lives with me. I bought my original belt at Aldo Accessories for around $9.99 on clearance, so for a leather belt, it's still a great deal. I love the mod vibe of it.

Monsieur Vizzini was acting very cool on Friday nigth.
"I lounge like a boss. Two pillows please me."
He likes to chill near us when we play board games. I think it's so that he can snag the pieces when we're not looking.
"I resent that remark."

  1. the orange feathered dress - what a score! I remember that label as being Very Nice Stuff that I couldn't afford in my 30's. Great scores on the belts too. And Vizzini, master of all he surveys, always makes me smile. xo

  3. That orange dress is stunning! can't wait to see how you wear it! :)

That belt looks similar to one I have that I rarely wear now. used to sling it around my waist, which I definitely can't do now, but maybe I'll get some ideas for how to wear it without a baby bump!

  4. OMG, that feathered dress is an amazing find. So interesting and fun. I'd go on a diet and lose 70 lbs. to fit into it. Might have to take out a few ribs, too...

  5. Sheila, what a fantastic find that dress is! I love it, love the feathers, love the ruching, love, love, love the colour. I also adore the pink fringed jacket. It's so exciting to see what you'll come up with next.
And yes, I agree that they really ought to make hosiery without that horrible reinforced toe. Although I did have such a problem trying to find silver or pale grey tights anyway.

  6. How do you do it? I never seem to find wow dresses like that! Ostrich feathers always remind me of Ginger Rogers when she wore a dress that had a skirt of ostrich feathers in Top Hat!
Then we have that eye catching jacket, the floral boots - oh I want them, yes I do and to finish off 'Two pillows' Vizzini!

  7. I'm diggin' the fringed, flap wildly in the wind jacket! I can just HEAR the wonderful noise it made. That dress!(which I noticed is only a size 8. Good job keeping your weight at bay.) I can't wait to see how stylin' you look in it!

  8. I can't wait to see the post-party photos of you wearing the peachy bird dress!

The leather dress is one of my fave pieces, and it looks great with your flower print docs. I need to see if I can still fit into my red leather dress and if so, use you as inspiration to layer it into an outfit.
