Velvet Pirate and Shades of Wine

Ahoy, Gentle Reader! I had a grand time in my velvet pirate coat today. In the morning, I also had a hardhat and hi-vis vest - fire alarm! I was proud of my team for evacuating quickly and going to the correct muster point.
This outfit is very much in my wheelhouse - there are certain vibes I never get tired of. Pirate, Velvet, Glam, Steampunk.

  • Velvet embroidered jacket - Tahari, thrifted; last seen here as part of my pirate outfit for the VFF Gala in February 2024
  • Silk tux blouse - no label, thrifted; last worn here in October 2023 for my birthday out with Mom
  • Wool slip dress - Dolce & Gabbana, vintage 90s, thrifted; last seen here in November 2023 with purple boots for a jab
  • Boots - Baroque Velazquez, Fluevog; last worn here in December 2024 with sequins
  • Puffer coat (below) - Donna Karan, consignment; last seen here in December 2024

My pirate coat was admired throughout the day - it's a dark wine velvet, and entirely trimmed with black velvet. It's rather hard to see, sorry - go here for pictures from when I first bought it.
As you can tell by my blurry state, it was rather early - I forgot to take a picture of the back, which is also decorated in black embroidery.

I got overly warm a few times - puffing up the stairs post-evacuation was one (all was well) - and took my coat off. I've had both this blouse and this dress for ages. I bought the stretch silk wine tux blouse in 2017 for $18.98 and have worn it 12 times now.
The dress is vintage Dolce & Gabbana, a real wool(!) slip dress from the 90s. It's covered in tiny balls and is a hair (human, cat) magnet, and yet I still love it year after year. I bought it right before my 50th birthday at the now-gone The Patch (sob!) for $27.95 and have worn it 14 times. I always feel like a million bucks in it.

Matching puffer! Due to the pirate jacket being velvet I was on high Velvet Rage Alert! Slippery fabrics like nylon help keep velvet from doing its clingy thing.
"I miss the hallway."

I had some Velvet Creep while walking to work, so I took the bus home.

It's starting to get lighter in the mornings - I might be able to start doing a dash for a late Stair Pic again.
"I'm in."

I think someone might enjoy that.

Accoutrements:
I went all in on matching.

  • Silk scarf - Maxine Noel, consignment
  • Toque - thrifted
  • Wool gloves - Parkhurst

The stuff:
Gorgeous boots - would you believe I've worn them 29 times since I got them in 2012?

Silver bling:
I wore the new-to-me feather brooch at the top of my shirt.

  • Feather brooch - Boucher, vintage 60s, thrifted; purchased here for $7.95
  • Etched silver hinged cuff - vintage, thrifted, Powell River
  • Cuff with red stone - thrifted
  • Silver/red stone ring - thrifted
  • Silver/onyx ring - Tocara, vintage fair
  • Silver chain ring - Mexican, consignment
  • Silver earrings - Israeli, consignment

  1. That black vintage D&G dress fits you perfectly. I love how you styled a blouse underneath. Fabulous boots as well.

    1. Thank you! I always wear something under the dress - I've never worn it on its own.

  3. Thanks for the link to when you purchased the velvet pirate coat as that picture highlights the fabulous wine color and pattern. What a glorious duo of the pirate coat and those amazing boots! I appreciate every piece of your jewelry, especially both cuffs and the earrings. I am also a fan of this outfit with the pirate coat off, making another sweet duo of blouse and boots.
    Happy Midweek!
    Cheers, Laurie

    1. Glad you peeked back at it, Laurie! It never photographs well. I love the boots and coat and have worn them together before (and I'm sure I will again!). Agreed, I like it with the jacket off too - I always try to make sure an outfit works no matter what layers I have on.

  4. The pirate coat is magnificent - I travelled back in time through your link as a reminder - and so are those boots! Loving the bling too. But no photos of the hardhat and hi-vis vest? How disappointing :-) xxx

    1. Right?? They are amazing boots. I'm still boggled I found them secondhand, covered in dust and barely worn.
