Casual Friday: Velvet, Rhinestones and Jeans

I put up the office Christmas trees (we have 3, one large and 2 small) and decorations today, so I had to dress to do bending, lifting and snagging at my clothes.
Enter: silk velvet, jeans and floral shoes. I had several "You're wearing jeans!" comments.

  • Crushed velvet top - no label, thrifted; purchased here for $17.99
  • Jeans - Levi Strauss, thrifted; last seen here in October with velvet and loafers
  • Shoes - Down to Earth Hadfield, Fluevog; last worn here in September with the evil orange dress
  • Coat (below) - Danier Leather; last worn here in November with autumn reds

Pretty dark out now when I do my stair pictures. It's light by the time I leave the house 20 minutes later, but at 7:40am, this is what I'm looking at when that timer goes off.
 A dark spooky castle!

But to the outfit - this is the first wearing of this new-to-me silk crushed velvet top - I wore a pale blue cami under it. I like how it wraps across at the bottom of the stretchy hemline.
It also has elasticated cuffs - the fabric itself is woven silk, and it's a soft, plush velvet. I steamed it inside out, then a quick touch on the outside to lift the pile - it has wonderful drape and softness to it. The velvet retained its "crush". It's really nice quality.
My bizarre commuter jeans were perfect for tree decorating. I'm wearing little pale pink nylon socks with bows at the back of the ankle.

Outerwear - it rained solid all day. Rain rain rain.
This hat keeps my head dry, and the coat dries out quickly and stays soft. I had a haircut (just a trim) after work, so much walking in the wetness. I'm still damp!

The stuff:
Happy floral shoes. These are one of my favourite pairs of Fluevogs - they're men's!

Sparkle bling!
See, the blue in the shoes, and the pale blue cami, then that means the red and iridescent blue necklace will work perfectly. Add the lone blue rhinestone earring, a plain blue stud, my blue topaz ring, and a very old family ring with a red stone, and we're good to go.

  • Necklace - vintage 50s, gift from L
  • Rhinestone earring - vintage 60s, vintage fair
  • Stud - don't remember
  • Red stone ring - family, 1930s?
  • Fulvia Ring - Wendy Brandes

I have no idea whose ring that is, but it's old and very worn - I'm seeing Mom tomorrow night, so I'll ask her if she knows.

Have a wonderful weekend, my friends. See you on Sunday!

  1. It's so difficult getting up and ready for work when it's dark I find! Luckily our sunrise isn't so late as yours is, so photos aren't too tricky. Some mornings it's tough in winter though!

I love that velvet top on you - I'm a big fan of wrap tops although I don't yet have anything velvet!

    1. Isn't it? I hate this 6-8 week dark period in the year.

  2. These dark mornings are a trial! At least you've got a gorgeous view to cheer you up.
You look great in jeans, they're a perfect fit. The velvet and leather and those incredible shoes stop them looking at all ordinary or mainstream.
That topaz ring is a beauty! xxx

  3. I'm not a big fan of dark mornings, but I am intrigued by the spooky castle. I too get "you are wearing jeans" (or trousers) remarks on the rare occasions when I wear them. I love the velvet wrap blouse, what a gorgeous colour. And those shoes are surely fit to cheer up the rainiest of days. Seems we have been sharing weather again, too. xxx

  4. What a gorgeous velvet top, Sheila! I love the style and the colour. I used to own lots of velvet tops, jackets and skirts back in the late 90s. I gave them away years ago but I wish I had kept them now! XXX

  6. How funny is it that we are both wearing crushed velvet in the very same shade of Crimson red. I really like this look on you and I am pleased that you were putting up Christmas decorations. That sounds like fun. I also really love the floral sense. The siight of them makes me happy. Low the bow back anklets!

    1. All the cool kids wear crushed red velvet, right, Elle? Ha! I can't put up decorations at home, so at least I get to enjoy them at work.

  7. It is soooo hard getting out of bed in the dark, and then it's dark again by the time I get home from work. At least the shortest day of the year is coming up, and we'll be turning towards the sun again!
