Woo, miss me? I couldn't blog last night because L and I went to a concert. And after a long day today, followed by my WW meeting, it is now past 8pm and I haven't had dinner and I'm hungry! Feed me!
This is yesterday. Outfit planned around having to stand in line outside the Alix Goolden Hall (non-assigned seating sucks!) and wanting to do it in the comfiest shoes possible. Also, orange.- Cardigan - Gap, thrifted; purchased here for $6.00
- Top - Le Chateau, consignment; last seen here (2nd outfit) in September 2014 with capris
- Skirt - Club Monaco, thrifted; last worn here in July 2014 with mustard
- Shoes - Land's End, thrifted; last seen here (4th outfit, after the bigass boots) in March
I'm a little shocked that I haven't worn this skirt since July! I love it, but I didn't have enough neutral tops. I'm all covered with the white tops now (how very creative of me), including this one, which I rescued from the giveaway piles in a panic before buying more white tops. After I wash it, it's going back in the donations.
I liked the dashing air that the scarf lends. I tossed it about dramatically all day.
I left it at home to go to the concert, however. It was too fussy for sitting in a warm venue.
What did we see? Oh yeah! We saw Whitehorse, a Canadian husband and wife duo, comprised of Melissa McLelland and Luke Doucet. We've been Luke Doucet fans since he opened for Blue Rodeo years ago, so jumped at the chance to see them at our favourite venue. I was rushed and totally forgot my camera, so no pics. No one online seems to have reviewed the gig, but it was excellent. Here's a link to their site ('cause I love).
The stuff:
Pics taken at nearly midnight. Me tired...
The shoes performed admirably.
Blue bling (say that 3 times fast, it's fun!):
Knuckle duster rings!
- Scarf - Vera, thrifted
- Fulvia Ring and lapis lazuli ring - Wendy Brandes
- Earrings - local
Someone was mad that we were out all night...he lay in wait to MURDER us.
"This is attempt number 1, mofo!" |
Today, I remembered that I had yet to join up with Gracey's "Literary Stylings"at Fashion for Giants. Go! Quickly!
I'm well-red and well-read. Get it?
- Jacket - Le Chateau, consignment; last seen here in January with a mess of neutrals (how unlike me)
- Blouse - Tahari, thrifted; purchased here for $4.00
- Skirt - J. Michaels, vintage 80s, thrifted; last worn here in January with Chinoiserie
- Shoes - Queen of Prussia Louise, Fluevog; last worn here in March while being a snappy dresser
I had major temperature control issues today, so I sometimes wore the jacket and sometimes went about in the office bare-armed. I liked that look too. I'm good with my arms.
Vizzini had slightly forgiven me by morning.
"You better give me some attention tonight, or it's murder for you, woman." |
The stuff:
The WW group loved the shoes. Everyone does!
Red and purple and pink bling:
Many colours! This is the second time this week I've done a skinny belt over a high-waisted pencil skirt - I like how it sets the waist off.
- Belt - Plum
- Purple cuff - thrifted
- Red cuff - Rimanchik
- Ring - gift from Cindy
- Earrings - Le Chateau
So aside from my awful red/read pun, and much cogitating, I couldn't put together an outfit to suit any of these books. I did read a lot this month, though. I'm happy with that!
This was our bathroom book:
Stephen King's "On Writing" is an excellent book about the craft of being a writer, as well as a semi-autobiography of King. This is my second time reading it - I used to have a copy, but lent it to someone several years ago (don't remember who - this is why I don't lend books I like!), so I bought it again for my writerly husband for Christmas.
I'm gradually working my way through all of Chuck Palahniuk's books, so "Tell-All" was next up. It's not one of his stronger books. It describes the story of an aging screen goddess from the point of view of her maid/assistant. The device in it is to name a lot of names of real Hollywood stars...and all the names are bolded. Distracting. If you're going to read a Chuck Palahniuk novel, read "Invisible Monsters," which is still my number one favourite.
The other book is my current Book Club selection, as chosen by my friend Karen. Mary Lawson's "Crow Lake" is a story of a young girl and her siblings growing up in a fictional remote town (Crow Lake) in northern Ontario. I really enjoyed it, up till the end, which felt forced and wrapped things up too neatly. Meh.
After reading the first volume of Joe Hill's and Gabriel Rodriguez's "Locke & Key" I supported my local comic store (shout out to Gareth at Legends Comics, a fantastic and award-winning store!), and bought the rest of the series.
Wow, this is how a graphic novel series should be! Because it's written by a novelist, the story is carefully plotted out over 6 volumes and doesn't just go and go and go with no resolution in sight (I'm looking at you, Walking Dead). It's scary, touching, funny and insanely beautiful, with a completely original story and characters that you really connect with. I've never cried while reading a graphic novel (no judgment!), but I did when I finished this. L also devoured it and we both loved it. Awesome.
We also picked up the 4th book in the "Saga" series by Brian K. Vaughan and Fiona Staples.
Things are unraveling with our characters, and I'm intrigued to see where this goes next.
I am already nearly done another book, and really loving all the reading I've been getting in. What have you read lately?
I love the drama of your blue scarf too, and your high-waisted skirt with the belt.
ReplyDeleteReading? Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes for the 3rd time and Adrift in the Arctic Ice Pack, non-fiction about a search expedition for John Franklin. Brrr.
I'm jealous of all yoru reading! I keep trying to set aside time to do so..I've read one book since baby's been born, which now I think of it isn't that bad! Hopefully I can squeeze anotehr in before her turns 1, ha!
ReplyDeleteI love both outfits, although the red one is my favourite. I've been looking in thrift stores a lot more often lately, haven't really found anything, but there isn't a lot of choice. Just taking my time and seeing what I find :) I'm looking for more plain tops, but colourful ones or creams or browns for neutral ones :)
Toss that scarf, woman - it adds such a fabulous swagger. Our cats try to kill us too, we'll have to start counting. Reading sci-fi by Iain Banks, good dsytopia stuff. xoxo
ReplyDeleteI'm currently reading my way through your blog and loving it but I had to say that 'On Writing' is one of my favourite Stephen King books, along with 'Danse Macabre'.
ReplyDeleteLove your style and taste!
Chic, smart and bright - that's you, Sheila!
ReplyDeleteHaving just finished two novels set in Nazi Germany, I needed some light relief, so I'm reading The House of Silk, the "new" Sherlock Holmes book by Anthony Horowitz. I like it! xxx
I have a confession to make, Sheila. Visiting your blog, admiring your clothes, gaining inspiration from your unusual fashion-choices, and listening to your "voice" as you describe your life all help me move forward in my personal path. They assist me in retrieving the woman hidden deep inside me. I'm more of her than I would be without you. So, for that, I thank you. Deeply.
ReplyDeleteI wish you weren't literally on the other side of the continent from me. Raiding your donation pile would be a dream ;D
ReplyDeleteRe: Cat murders, Spike has been HORRENDOUS since I started working. He walks on me all night and morning. A 15+ lb cat on your chest is nothing to sneeze at!!
He also gets the zoomies in the middle of the night, and has caused utter mayhem this morning because I wanted to sleep in. Letting the DH feed him hasn't even swayed his demand for my attention.
Nothing like the love of a cat!
I was at that concert! I was in Victoria visiting my parents and we went. SO GREAT.
ReplyDeleteI have a question for you: my mom is looking to sell a few pieces from the 40s that were my grandmother's (a wedding dress, a fancy silk dressing gown). Do you have any recommendations for good places to consign that sort of thing? Thanks!
My fave on the first look is the scarf - the colour is beautiful - and I am all for that second outfit - my fave there are the shoes!
ReplyDeleteLocke and Key looks like a good read - I'm a graphic novel fan too! I'm currently read a collection of short stories called "Hellgoing" by Lynn Coady.
ReplyDeleteWhitehorse performed here at one of the summer festivals last year and they were great. I watched some of their videos on YouTube but enjoyed them much more live.
