Orange Slingbacks and Kaleidoscopic Silk

Monday! I made it. A complicated file that I've been working on for months is finally (almost) resolved. It felt good.
I also felt good in this spot of Colour Therapy - orange is a soothing colour to me, which made me realize I need to do some mental health self-care, clothes-wise.

  • Cardigan - J. Crew, thrifted; last seen here in June with a fancy skirt
  • Sweater - Talbots, thrifted; last worn here a week ago with tweed and ruffles
  • Skirt - Maeve, thrifted; first seen here in June 2019 with denim
  • Shoes - Vagabond, consignment; purchased here yesterday for $59.99

I always fully plan my outfits out - garments, shoes, accessories, hosiery, underwear - the night before, so that I don't have to think about what to wear in the morning.
I was feeling apathetic about it last night, though.

Not that this is a bad outfit!
I loved wearing this - I was comfortable and felt snazzy. Isn't the skirt cute?? It's a wrap-around, but it's anchored down, and it has a bit of elastic in the back for a comfy waistband.

This is an excellent pattern too - it reminds me of a kaleidoscope. It's even better close up (pic here).
I have issues with patterns that don't show up well on camera - I will get rid of a piece if I think it looks muddy or fussy on my screen.

The rest of the outfit is just the usual suspects: a basic top and my linen cardi for sun and AC coverage.
I do need to take some time and put some outfits together, just clothes and shoes. It will help me feel more positive and upbeat when I know I have a good outfit on. It's a good mental health practice for me.

The stuff:
I love the shoes - they were hugely comfortable and no blisters on my feet. I was worried that the slingback would rub my heel but the wide strap was quite soft.

Mostly orange bling:
I added the necklace at the last minute.

  • Necklace - thrifted
  • Cuff/ring - Italian, mid-60s, vintage mall
  • Earrings - vintage fair
  • Lapis lazuli ring - Wendy Brandes

As I left the house for work today, I glanced through the kitchen.

"You are dead to me."

He looked so sad!

I take my outfit pictures in the morning after breakfast, and my "stuff" pictures when I get home from work. I felt a chewing on my skirt.
"FEED ME!"

Little monster! He got dinner at his usual time.

And lastly, here's a blooper for you! My stair picture is the last picture I take in the morning, and like all of my pictures, there are no multiple shots - one and I'm done! But today I had to take a second shot.
"TOO...CLOSE..."

  1. Today is the first anniversary of the death of my mother and I wore black. I felt rather awful all day and looking at your lovely, colourful, oh so orange outfit I realize I should have drenched myself in something cheerfully vibrant. You look wonderful in that very happy ensemble. I hope it made you feel better. It did me :)

  2. I love that skirt, what a fantastic print, it reminds me of stained glass. The orange accessories are so good especially those groovy 1960s earrings.
I was experimenting with the self timer when Jon injured his back the other day, there were some right howlers!
Look at Vizzini's little face! Don't they tug at your heartstrings sometimes? xxx

    1. Yes, it does have that look, doesn't it, Vix? The earrings were only $2.00! And they are wood, so light, it's amazing.

Ha, yes, I've done a few really weird shots myself!

I know, that face! Yes, I just melt.

  4. You look wonderful. Love the skirt and picking up the blue with the necklace is a nice touch. Love that your clothes are thrifted. If that is you putting together an outfit when feeling apathetic - well I am impressed and can only aspire lol Shazx

    1. Thank you, Shaz! Yes, most of my clothes are second-hand - I've been doing that for decades. Ha, you are too kind! I have "formulas" that I use when I'm feeling slack.

  5. Lovely outfit. I think the skirt looks like stained glass and I love the orange with it. The little pop of turquoise in the beads was fab.

    Take care

  6. Orange is a happy colour, isn't it? Like yellow, it is a colour that never fails to cheer me up. I like your outfit, the orange cardigan and shoes are so nicely matched. Funny how they look red in the first photo where there was less light so the colour came up darker I suppose. In other photos this lovely shade of orange is more visible- but if it was red, the outfit would still be lovely. The white sweater is a nice choice with this thrifted skirt. The skirt is so unique, I like the pattern, makes me think of stained glass. The accessories are cool, the turquoise necklace in particular. I think I spot some turquoise details in the maxi skirt. Vagabond shoes are so pretty. Vizzini is adorable.

    1. It is, and yellow too for me, Ivana. The cardigan is more coral and the shoes are a dark orange with more red in them - I did play with that as there is red and orange in the skirt.

You're the third to call it stained glass - I'm going to have to change the name! Yes, there are turquoise bits in the skirt - good eye! - which is why I went with the turquoise necklace.

  7. Oh, I so understand about that complicated file. I had one of those too, and it was such a relief finally getting it done, as it kept weighing on my mind. Those are the things we need colour therapy for, I guess. Nothing like a flash or two of orange to clear the mind. That skirt is all kinds of gorgeous, and of course your new-to-you shoes are just made to go with it. I used to put outfits together the night before too, but now I often don't bother, and just assemble something at the spur of the moment. But that's only for my two working days, as for the rest of the week I have oodles of time. Vizzini does look sad indeed. It's funny how cats have different facial expressions, isn't it. That FEED ME one is precious! xxx

    1. I cannot wait to put this in the Completed file! It's been a nightmare. Orange perks me up, and makes me feel warm and safe.

If I were making outfits at the last minute, I'd be wearing dresses every day! I like to pick my weekend outfits on a more "I feel like this" creative basis.

Vizzini sulks, which is what he's doing there. He gets mad/sad when I leave.

  8. Even though I am retired now, I lack time this week. How on earth that is possible I don't know. So I will go through your posts, but won't be able to comment on all of them.
This outfit I like, although I find the cardigan a bit long at the back.
And why you are dead to Vizzini... I have no clue.

Yes, I agree - the length of the skirt makes it look very draggy and saggy in the back. Good eye!

He's mad at me for leaving. "You're dead to us/me" is a sarcastic way of dismissing someone. English idioms!

  11. I find bright colours boost my mood more too and this outfit just looks so happy! It is a stunning skirt and the orange is fun with it - I am trying to be a bit bolder with my outfit choices because I hardly see anyone now - maybe a few parents at school pick up or drop off but we can't chat for long with the restrictions really and having to keep our distance so why not experiment more with things I'd be too scared of trying before the world changed? haha! It's been really fun, even if my combinations haven't been anything gr it's fun for me - colour really does boost your mood!

  12. What a fab joyful outfit!, love your kaleidoscope/stained glass skirt, it's a beauty!, and love the orange shoes and cardi!. Actually, I love Orange color, it's so vitaminic!. Totally my kind of color.
And love how the turquoise necklace matches your glasses and enhances the turquoise bits in the skirt!. It's such a brilliant ensemble!
I've been trying to pick my outfits for the week on Sundays, as it takes me ages to decide anything. And I'm not in a good mood in the early mornings (grrrrr). I need some coffee to feel like a human being (I think you're going to agree with me on this!).

That's usually when I do it too - and I'm a huge dragon in the mornings too! You get me! Ha!

  13. What a thoroughly fantastic outfit. I really, really love this one, Shelia. It's something I could gleefully see myself sporting if I was in the mood for a hefty jolt of colour (which, out of all the seasons, I tend to be in the mood for most often during these sizzlingly hot summer months).

One neat connection that I have with orange is that it's my husband's favourite colour. As such, eons ago now, I started a fun tradition of wearing it (or coral, which he loves, too) on his birthday. This date falls in early August, when orange is fabulously apropos to the season, while also helping to rev up my excitement for fall's return all the more at the same time.

  15. A bold orange paired with white looks so fresh and summery. I really like the shoes. I've worn a bright yellow top this summer, paired with some colourful wide-leg swishy pants and I feel that it's an outfit you would approve :)
