Paillettes, Prada, Pirate and Platforms

Having only worked two days in the last 12, today was a challenge. A little bit of armour to the rescue - featuring my debut of this paillette-embellished blazer, picked up in Vancouver recently.

Colleague Stefanie and I laughed when we saw each other - she was also wearing a boxy blazer (hers was orange/yellow/brown plaid), a black pencil skirt and knee-high boots, plus gold necklaces!

  • Blazer - Nu, consignment, NWT; purchased here for $103.99
  • Sweater - Prada, consignment; last worn here layered under my Phool velvet vest in March
  • Skirt - Dries Van Noten, thrifted; last seen here in December 2022 with my roadkill top
  • Boots - Rockport, thrifted; last worn here in December 2022 (same outfit as the skirt)
  • Sleeveless coat - Only, thrifted; last seen here in March

You have to admit, it is a smashing outfit! I felt like a rock star.
I realized this morning that the black fabric behind the paillettes is velvet. Don't know what paillettes are? Let's consult the oracle:

Sequins have a hole in the center and are meant to be sewn on flat. Paillettes have the hole near the edge and are meant to dangle and move.

I was concerned about the looser sparkly bits would snag or catching on things, and I did have 2 or 3 minor incidents.
But overall, I loved it. It's quite thin, so a great "shoulder season" garment. I am looking forward to wearing it again.

So sparkly!
My Pirate skirt is by classy Belgian designer Dries Van Noten - I've had it for 6 years and have worn it 12 times. Yar! There be a Pirate skirt!

I took the jacket off  when I overheated from taking the stairs to attend to some maintenance items, including ungunking a ginormous coffee machine full of warm coffee grounds. Fun!
My lovely soft Prada sweater has been a good purchase - I was worried about it snagging on the plastic paillettes, but it was completely fine. It's a Paillette Miracle!

I like the jacket worn done up as well - it closes with a hook and eye.
I've got pockets.

Will it be rainy? Will it be sunny?
Yes! It was perfect Sleeveless Coat Weather.

Accoutrements:
Horses!

  • Toque - gift from Tammy
  • Brooch - Monet, vintage pop-up
  • Scarf - vintage, vintage fair
  • Gloves - Parkhurst

The stuff:
Such great boots - the platform gives me height but it's only a 1-inch heel. Good for stairs!

Gold bling:
Only the chain on the left is real gold - it's from one of those "Gold by the Inch" stalls that used to pop up in the malls in the 1980s.

  • Chain - vintage 80s, Grandma J's
  • Open chain - Monet, thrifted
  • Wide bracelet - thrifted, Sidney
  • Thin bracelet - Trifari, vintage 60s, thrifted
  • Leaf brooch - Grandma W
  • Earrings - Reiss, vintage 60s, vintage fair
  • Brass rings - vintage 70s, vintage mall

Did you spot the leaf brooch on the jacket lapel? That belonged to L's Grandma W, a lovely lady who enjoyed racy novels and cat figurines (and cats). Thinking of you, Grandma.

  1. I am so hearing you, Sheila! I always need to wear armour in situations like that. I often even have to wear armour after one of my three-day weekend :-)
Your sparkly paillette-embellished blazer meets my full approval, as does your whole outfit actually. Prada sweater and Dries van Noted skirt, yes indeed. I am still waiting for the day when I find something by my fellow countrymen Dries in a second-hand shop. One day, I hope. Loving L's Grandma's leaf brooch. She sounds like a lovely lady! xxx

  2. Snazzy outfit plus I learned something new and look forward to sharing the difference between paillletes and sequins with my grandchildren! I had to scroll to revisit the sighting of the leaf brooch. So special to have jewelry that came from people, wearable memories and wearable hugs. ❤️

    Cheers, Laurie

  3. Paillettes are a new one on me, I shall endeavour to introduce it into my vocabulary this week and impress someone!
That jacket is fabulous and adding the sleeveless coat is inspired, it'd be a crime to hide those paillettes. xxx

  5. I love how you've worn this jacket! It's such a fun statement piece and it looks so good with that skirt :) It's so good you and your colleague were in similar outfit formulas as well. Shows how stylish you always are!

  6. Like Vix, this post was an education - I'd never heard of paillettes. The sleeveless jacket is a great idea!
