A Hug From Canada

Two things I will never discuss on this blog: religion and politics. However, having said that, I come from UK and US stock, although I'm 3rd generation Canadian. And...both the UK and the US have made some interesting decisions this year and now things are a little...weird.
So this outfit is a hug from me/Canada (represented by my bracketing bits of red with white in the middle), to my US friends (represented by the stars bomber jacket) and my UK friends (represented by the plaid).

  • Bomber jacket - Forever 21, thrifted; purchased here last week for $16.95
  • Sleeveless blouse - Violet & Claire, thrifted; purchased way back here in October 2016 for $9.95
  • Skirt - Nygard, thrifted; last seen here in October 2015 with these same shoes and yesterday's blouse
  • Shoes - Marc; last worn here in December 2016 with teal, red, purple and snow
  • Coat (below) - Danier Leather

Our countries are made up of individuals, and we all make our own choices. I support my friends, my fellow bloggers and my readers, no matter what your choices are. All the warm fuzzies to you, from your polite neighbour to the north/across the pond.

But this is a fashion blog! I don't talk politics, but I do talk clothes. This is the first wearing of this very-patriotic-if-I-were-American bomber jacket. I liked it, but didn't love it. I wish the stars were a little smaller, and I struggled with what to put with it; although I tried a lot of solid skirts (yellow looked good, so did pink), I wasn't feeling it.
I'd nearly forgotten about this white blouse, but hauled it out and gave it a good steaming last night (I also steamed the jacket which spiffed it right up). Of course, I immediately got black printer waste toner right on the front of it. Fingers crossed it comes out in the wash.
I love this plaid skirt - it fits really nicely and I like the pleated detail that swooshes when I walk.

Outerwear:
Rain gear! My lovely red leather coat, worn with my Andre bowler, thrifted fur Danier scarf and Parkhurst gloves.

The stuff:
I almost did my red pointy-toe patent pumps, but my feet said, NO. So the comfy suede ones it is!

Red and blue bling:
Red bits for Canada!

  • Earrings - Tania Gleave
  • Lapis lazuli ring - Wendy Brandes

  1. Very cool outfit, and very kind thoughts. Some of us who are your continental neighbors are indeed feeling more than a little unsettled about this week's events, not to mention about what's next. Thanks for the hug.

  3. Thank you, Sheila! That coat is fantastic. Things are indeed looking dark south of your border. Wearing black tomorrow but marching in pink on Sat.

    1. You're welcome, Ismay! The red coat is one of my favourites. I'm in black, navy and purple today...a bit like a bruise, lol. Good luck at the march!

I love your plaid skirt, the shape, the lovely pleated detail, and it's even better if it swooshes when you walk!
Lots of red color will cheer up on a rainy day!

    1. Thank you, my dear! I think our US/UK friends need it too - it's the least we can do. Red is the best colour, isn't it?

  5. I haven't been sure how to process current events as a Canadian. I think you've hit the nail on the head: calm compassion.
And phooey on printer cartridges. I will admit to avoiding our printer/copier (at work that is.. not that I have much need for it on mat leave) if I'm wearing anything I particularly like!

    1. I know, I don't know how to process them either - thanks, Cara. Ugh, I was so mad at the toner - the blouse still has a wee mark, but I might be able to live with it. This is why I go through so many white tops!

  6. I hope that you do get the toner out of your top! I really like your printed bomber, I like the trend but I'd have no idea how to ear it either so sorry I can't give you any inspiration.

There are a lot of interesting things going on in the world of politics, you're right. There is always room for more kindness though and it's lovely you've shared that in your post :)

    1. Most of it came out, thanks, Mica! I think the key with bombers is to contrast them with something dressy. I'll figure it out...or I'll give it away! Aw, thank you for "getting" what I was saying.

  7. Tough day for a lot of us in the U.S. Thanks for the virtual hug.

Way back in November, I scheduled a tattoo session for today so that I would be otherwise engaged. I think we'll get through most of the warm-toned color today--maybe 2-3 sessions after this.

  10. Good for you with that polite and diplomatic stance today Sheila. This doesn't look like an outfit that you may have struggled with at all. The skirt and jacket are a brilliant pairing - right up my street anyway.
Sending you a hug from this side of the pond too x

    1. Thanks, Anna - I was a little nervous about posting it, to be honest. I had to explain the outfit all day, as many people wondered if I was supporting "you know who" in the US. Hugs back!

  11. I would agree, my dear friend, with your fellow buddies here....you've struck a lovely note of support with your outfit. I LOVE the skirt on you and excellent shoes! Think you've done well with the bomber jacket but not sure about the star size either. That said, an excellent outfit with invites lots of "may we live in interesting times" conversation. Glad to be a part of it with you!

  12. Those shoes are lovely! And I appreciate the festive internationalism.

I've had good luck using rubbing alcohol to get toner out of clothes.

  17. Thank you, thank you, thank you! My blog isn't political or religious either, but these are the times... We survived the inauguration by not watching any of it, and had local rally today. Lovely Canada will likely have some new residents during the next four years. Love the bomber jacket, btw. jen
