That's why I do the backwards hangers - every time I wear this, I'm reminded how lovely it is.

Passing over it again and again...and yet, I don't want to get rid of it.
It's not a Jammy Dress, which makes it a bit harder to style in a way that is novel to me - I love "new" things, and new combinations, and there are only so many ways to wear this dress.
I have worn it with this sparkly turtleneck before, but not the shoes. It really only works with black or brown/caramel accessories, which I have a lot of, but still...
Showing off the not-pockets. These are flaps of fabric that give the front of it two points at the hem. The neckline is done up with three "cufflink" style buttons - I've played with it a few times and it looks best like this.
I adore the textile, which is cotton. It has a built-in white lining, also cotton. Such high quality (the dress is made in Germany).
All that fine cotton (it's handkerchief weight) means Cotton Rage, cousin of Velvet Rage could appear, so I had to wear a slip on the bottom to keep it from riding up against my nylons while I walked to and from work.
I added the black jacket as a nod to autumn. I also needed the pockets.

A thick-ish belt is required to tuck all the extra fabric into, as the top half of of the dress is very oversized and saggy-looking with a skinny belt.

ReplyDeleteYour Cinderella dress - lovely though it is - is indeed a tad gloomy, which seems to be in contrast with its handkerchief weight. Perhaps this is why you have been passing it over again and again?

It's funny how that happens! I pass over it for that exact reason - it has to be cool enough to suit the gloomy grey pattern, but still warm enough to wear a cotton dress! However, I do love it.

DeleteI agree with your assessment and the comments of others, this is definitely a drab colored dress. Would you ever consider wearing a hot pink top underneath it with similarly colored accessories? In any case, the dress is a Kenzo, which probably will save it from ever seeing the Limbo pile.
ReplyDeleteOn the other hand, if you ever decide the time has come for the dress to go, perhaps your friend (Carol?) who sews her own clothes could repurpose it as some other type of clothing. (So much easier to plan projects for other people. ;-) I decided not to alter my paper bag wide legged cropped pants because, after trying them on, I actually liked them!)
You are in the home stretch, tomorrow is Friday and then the weekend! Maybe you had a Mom Adventure today. :-)

I appreciate your thoughts, Laurie, and no, I would not wear a coloured top with this dress. I have thought about how I could shake it up, but I keep coming back to the same neutrals. But now that I consider it, I didn't try that hard! My denim vest would look good over it, as would a cardigan.
DeleteI would never cut up a designer piece - it's hard for me to take away that vision. The dress is still a keeper - as you note, it's Kenzo! - but I do need to rethink how I've been wearing it. Future Sheila, read this comment!

I am always delighted when you wear this dress. It is one of my favorites of yours, yet I can see where it might be difficult to accessorize. Just from these pictures, seeing the tones (on my computer, anyway), I kept wondering if darker turquoise/green would do it proud? It seems as though it might contrast, yet complement. Red /burnt orange possibly also. But I am besotted with color , so perhaps it is just me!
ReplyDeleteVery sad about the kitten; I hope it finds a good home. We went through a similar thing. After you’ve loved a furry son and seen him go through so much, and had your heart wrenched about, the notion of it all happening again is just too much.

it's one of my favourites as well, Rita, but tricky to style. I'd say...maybe...on a dark teal/green, and I do like the idea of a burnt orange (I have a turtleneck in that shade). That's the best suggestion so far!

Styling this grey dress with black works well, but maybe you would also enjoy styling it with red?

I think red is too much with the black/grey/brown/white - it's already a lot of colours. I do like Rita's idea above of a rusty-orange. Or maybe, I just live with it as is??
