Orange Bookends, Skants and Copper

Another day, another blouse, another set of bookends. Bookends, you say? I might make this my favourite outfit of the week, just so I can talk about bookends on my Substack (here, come say hi! subscribe for free! get my articles in your inbox!).
Faithful readers will know this (bookending, not trying to lure you to Substack) is a trick I deploy with some regularity.

  • Blouse - Just Cavalli, consignment; last worn here in May 2023 with these same shoes and yesterday's skirt
  • Skants - no label (handmade), consignment, first seen here in July with odd animals and pink platforms
  • Shoes - Groovy Aubrey, Fluevog; last worn here in August with all the yellow
  • Leather coat (below) - Eileen Fisher, thrifted; last seen here in August

Colour on top, colour on the bottom - something in the middle.
In this case, this gorgeous winged snakeskin print top is paired with my favourite orange shoes.

And the "something" is my skants. Back for another wearing, they're not quite a skirt, not quite pants.
Skants!

This is a nice drapey look - I felt like me and was utterly happy fluttering my sleeves at my colleagues.
A side benefit from bookending is it creates a canvas for showing off cool jewelry.

Incognito.
Brown is very trendy right now - but I've been wearing it forever, never stopped. Trends, pshaw!

Accoutrements and stuff:
Banana Republic is having a moment too - this is a silk scarf from them, picked up for maybe $20 last year? I just liked it.

  • Silk scarf - Banana Republic, consignment

Copper bling:
There's that cool jewelry now. I liked how all this lovely warm metal worked with the base outfit.

  • Copper ball choker/bracelet - vintage 60s, vintage expo
  • Copper ball/chain necklace - vintage 60s, consignment
  • Copper leaf bracelet - vintage 60s, thrifted, Sidney
  • Earrings - vintage expo
  • Copper ball ring/enamel ring - consignment
  • Bronze ring - P. Sarpaneva, Finland, vintage expo

Half of my copper collection is packed away for the season - I now have so many pieces that I swap them over so that I can properly enjoy them. Excited to change seasons - only a couple of weeks to go!

  1. While I absolutely appreciate bookends, it’s the copper jewelry that is wowing me with this outfit. I like the set, how the pieces all say “we play well together” and the pop of oblong turquoise in the ring. Also, am enjoying your substack writing. :)
    Cheers, Laurie

    1. I wanted to wear the top and showcase the jewelry, so I've succeeded, thanks, Laurie! Aw, that's so kind of you, thank you - it's a little intimidating out there in the "big pond"!

  2. Beautiful outfit! I love copper jewelry too but I find that it emits a weird metallic smell that starts to bother me over the day. Have you experienced this and do you have advice? I sometimes wonder if it’s a reaction with my skin that does it

    1. Yes, that smell of pennies sometimes wafts off the older pieces that have lost their finish (good quality copper has a coating on it to keep it from going green). If it's a small piece, you could put a bit of clear nail polish on it.

  3. I'm al about the bookends, too!
The sleeves on that top are wonderful. I'm familiar with skorts (skirts meet shorts), loving the skants or, in Brit speak, we'd have to call them Skousers, not to be confused with Scousers, which are people from Liverpool! xxx

    1. It's such an easy formula, especially when you have colourful shoes!

I love the top - should have worn it more this season.

HAA! I love it - I know what Scousers are, as my pal Nick is from Manchester (he's rather vocal about scousers!).

  4. Laughing at Vix's comment!
    I am another bookend appreciator!
The blouse is utterly gorgeous! It is such a pretty shape and what lovely sleeves. The copper accessories add an extra layer of warmth and sheen to the outfit. Plus, of course, these are one of my fave shoe pairs. I've noted the tip on brown!
    The jacket looks so soft!
Hope all is well with you!!!xx

    1. Same, Kezzie! Gotta love a good bookend, right? Thank you so much - the copper is my favourite part. Yup, get your brown out for autumn and you'll be one of the cool kids!

  6. I'm a fan of brown too and I'm glad it is a trend because that means lots to choose from in stores. It especially looks good with the orange! Fabulous shoes!

  7. Loving the skousers (thanks Vix, I'm adopting that one)! They give off effortless elegant vibes.

    1. Hee hee! I've decided I'm not keeping the skousers - I don't reach for them, and they're a pain for walking (I like to take big strides).
