A Mini Capsule Wardrobe, a Walk in the Forest, and Bad Driving Conditions

I was gone this weekend again - off to see L's folks for our Christmas visit with them. We try to make our trips up-Island and to the coast be like surgical strikes: quick, efficient and with a minimum of baggage (minus gifts). Therefore, a capsule wardrobe was in order to maximize outfits but minimize valuable packing space that could otherwise hold gifts!

Our travel involves driving for about 3 hours, then sitting in the car waiting for a ferry for about an hour, then sitting on the ferry for an hour an a half. I tell ya, travel is tough. Anyway, one wants to be comfortable (especially when sitting in a little Miata).

Travel outfit (Friday):
My leather skirt (last seen here) because it's warm (it was very cold out!) and loose and comfy. Layered tee over long-sleeved tee (which means the graphic tee can get another use (if I don't spill on it) because it's not next to my skin). The serpentine necklace and the silver hoop earrings are the only jewelry I took, and the skinny belt was the only accessory. I wore my little short cowboy booties all weekend. I wore knee-high socks (not shown) with all the outfits because sitting in tights for that long is not happy-making.

As an aside, how much am I loving long skirts in the winter? So much!

I also layered this awesome vest over pretty much everything I wore all weekend, whenever I needed extra warmth:
It's faux leather and faux fur, and was 50% last ticketed price at Esprit, which made it $30. Regular price was $139.95. Score!

It has a little faux bone toggle-type button so that you can do it up, and is SO soft - it feels and looks real. I knew we'd be going for at least one walk while we were up there, so I packed a hat, gloves and scarf:
I only wore the hat on the trip down-Island (to hide my gross unwashed hair), but I wore the boots and scarf a lot.

Long tee (Plum), tee (AVA, consignment), skirt (Danier Leather, thrifted), boots (Miz Mooz), necklace (gift from Elaine), belt (Plum), hat (DeLux), gloves and scarf (The Bay, several years old).

Check out the view of the Island from the top of the hill:
Those mountains have some fine skiing, so I'm told. You couldn't pay me to strap on skis. Oh, no.

We wandered by the local park where I drove a helicopter:
My pilot skillz are madd!

We wandered down a "road" called The Cut:
It was cut through the original forest to put power lines in to the town over a century ago. That's forest on either side. There are bears! but not at this time of year, because they are hibernating. Good! Stay sleeping, bears!

See the frozen puddles? We had fun jumping in them, although some had water.

Look how cool the patterns were in the puddles:
It's like a topographical map!

We took an even smaller path and headed into the woods. It is a good thing that L grew up there and is savvy in the ways of the woods, because this city girl would have been lost pretty darn quick. The path was half-frozen, half-mud, and some of the "bridges" were not in good shape:
We crossed much worse than that (and I'm proud to say my Miz Mooz did not even leak, although they are a bit muddy). Scary!

How beautiful is the West coast forest?
Moss, lichens, ferns, salal, fir and cedar trees...and it was dead silent, no bugs or birdsong at all.

If you were to head through these trees you would be heading into the wilds of British Columbia:
Nothing but logs, trees and black bears!

We walked into the forest for about an hour, and every so often we heard this popping/cracking noise - it was the trees swaying gently, "talking" to each other:
That skinny fir in the centre was one of the culprits - we tracked him down! Those trees are all secondary growth (most of the old, original trees were chopped down in the early 20th century) and are over 60' tall, I'm sure.

Some of the stumps of the old trees are still there - you can see one just to the left side of the path below:
They're all covered in moss and have ferns and other plants growing out of them - they're called "nurse stumps" (I learned that in Brownies when I was a kid, when we would go for nature walks - this impressed L, who had never heard of that term).

You can also see the faint hint that the path was once a road. A 3' wide path is all that remains. Isn't that nest of roots on the fallen tree awesome?

This is what I wore for my forest expedition and lounging around the house all day:
My jeans got pretty muddy because I had to pull myself over a few trees that had fallen across the path. The drapey cardigan is new - picked it up at Dots a couple of weeks ago for $29.99. I'm wearing a cami for extra warmth under the cashmere sweater (only worn twice, here). I wore the twisty necklace as a choker this time.

Cardigan (Kensie Girl), sweater (J. McLaughlin, consignment), jeans (Esprit).
Unfortunately, after our walk, poor L came down with the same stomach bug I'd had last weekend. He managed to stay up long enough to see the Seahawks beat the Saints (go, 'Hawks!), but he was a mess all Saturday night. I can't believe we made the 8am ferry and drove all the way home this morning/early afternoon.

Especially when you consider the winter driving conditions:
Yikes! It snowed while we were away! The roads had been plowed but there was still a lot of ice and snow, and believe me, a little convertible is not meant for driving in that.

Thank goodness it wasn't windy, raining or snowing!
We did see an accident, and at least one 4x4 SUV fishtailing all over the road (right after he zoomed past us!).

I'm happy we don't usually get much snow in my town (up-Island gets much more), but it sure is pretty:
Ooooh! Aaahhhh!

I am in awe of L's driving skills at the best of times, but when the road's wet, it's cold and sun is glaring in our faces...
Eeep! We slowed right down. Thank you, L, for getting us home in one piece.

Because we had to get up so early, I didn't shower and my hair was disgusting (see note above about the hat). So this is my one and only "head chopped off" shot of today's outfit:
This belt is too big to actually wear at my waist, I discovered, but oh well. I had my hat, scarf, gloves, furry vest AND a wool coat over all of this.

I am so glad to be in other clothes again, and so happy to be home safe and sound! How was your weekend?

Cardigan (Kensie Girl), t-shirt (AVA, consignment), skirt (Danier Leather, thrifted), belt (Plum).

It's a Major Award! 2010 Edition

Wow, another year has gone by already! And here we are, the first Major Awards of the season - for blogs! Please feel free to visit the 2008 and 2009 editions. Here's my annual intro:

Since I started this blog in March 2008, I've been presented with a few of those blogging awards that tend to circulate around (rather incestuously, it seems at times). I'm always honoured that these amazing people want to recognize my little corner of the blogoverse, but I never pass the awards on. But hey, I also never pass on those "send this to 7 amazing women" emails. Call it lazy, if you wish, I don't mind. I think of it as Economy of Time.

So to everyone who's ever given me one, thank you, from the bottom of my silly ol' heart. You're all wonderful and I'd nominate you right back, but then there's that whole laziness thing.

Instead, here are my Major Awards to all of my favourite bloggers, in no particular order. These are big and small blogs; some get a kazillion comments, some get none. I've embedded links if you care to visit - I recommend it!

This year (just like last year), there have been a lot of changes in the blog-verse. Some bloggers that I loved last year have stopped posting, some I just stopped viewing (one only has so much time!). And some new bloggers came along. Things change.

How do I choose blogs? People leave me comments (if you have a blog and you've left me a comment, I've probably visited your blog), I hear about them from friends, or find a link through one of my regular websites.

Anyway, let's get started!

"It's a Major Award!"

My Favourite Canadians: Dress to shoes, Cara's Closet and My Edit

Dress to shoes: She's Sassy Jen! She takes gorgeous photos of the Canadian landscape and she's got a great eye for classics in everything (don't forget the killer cupcake recipe). Jen, more outfit photos, please! I know you're gorgeous!

Cara's Closet: I love watching Cara's style evolution - she's already a beauty, so seeing her experiment with colour and layering is awesome. Her funky poses reveal her sense of humour, and I appreciate her openness and kind comments. She also reminds me why I don't live on the prairies. Right...snow.

My Edit: Jentine is such an amazing thrifter - I drool over the amazing stuff she uncovers in her forays through the thrift stores. Plus, she's gorgeous, is a great writer and has an awesome photographer. Loving her "Thrift Thursdays".

I Think I Was Born In the Wrong Era: Couture Allure Vintage Fashion

Jody's an artist: she has combed through various publications and actual collections (check out what she has for sale!) to present the best from every fashion era. The photos will have you drooling, and possibly craving one of these treasures for yourself.

The Half My Age Twin: Megan Mae Daily

The blogger formerly known as Daily Waifu Snapshot is the lovely and funky Megan! She's a master (mistress?) thrifter and I love her shoe collection. Megan, if you ever make it up to my neck of the woods (or vice versa), we are going shopping!

The Silliest Question Ever: Does This Baby Make My Ass Look Fat

Duh! No, she's as tiny as ever! Kim is actually a friend in real life (her family met up with L and I for the Dolphins game in Florida this past December), and she is truly a stylish and smart lady. Her daughter, El, is showing signs of being like Mom - this can only be good.

If My Profs Looked This Good I'd Still Be In School: Fashionable Academics, In Professorial Fashion, The Cohabiting Closet

Fashionable Academics: Although a blog shared by close to a dozen contributors, Ann Underfunded Humanity and La Historiadora de Moda are the main posters. Their professional yet fabulous work attire reminds us that we can always add a bit of pizzazz to our lives through out clothes.

In Professorial Fashion: A-Dubs, Dorky Medievalist and E-Jo are the purveyors of professorial perfection on this hilarious blog (I believe they coined the phrase "Style Nation"). Due to the highly secretive nature of educators, they're all headless, so be warned. Not headless like zombies, don't be afraid.

The Cohabiting Closet: Rad in Broolyn (I always thought that said "Brooklyn") and Anne don't really share a closet, but they do share a sensibility when it comes to clothes: making fabulous outfits! Rad's laid-back and Anne's a little bit girlier, but they're ALL rock n' roll!

If We Met, I'd Expect Her to Talk Like This: By Hillary

So breezy and casual, I feel like I know Hillary from reading her blog. She's got killer hair, and is a pro when it comes to pretty make-up and nails (can you please come and do my manicure?). And she always has a question for her readers, and really engages with them. I like that.

Up-and-Comers: Lawyerdoll and freedastyle

Lawyerdoll: "Because no one wants their lawyer rocking combat boots and concert t-shirts" is her blog's motto - well, I don't know, I think I might like a lawyer like that! She's working on her professional style, and is improving all the time - but it's this gal's comments that I love. I would party down with 'Doll.

freedastyle: Appropriately, Freeda and 'Doll know each other. Freeda puts herself out there and isn't afraid to make a silly pose (love 'em). She also sews, which makes me want to kidnap her and install her as my personal seasmstress. Of course, I'm joking...please ignore the sounds from my closet.

Uncommon Bravery and Delight: Shybiker

He's Ralph and she's Shy - and they're one and the same. Shy has demonstrated that you are what you choose to be (*sniff* that reminds me of "The Iron Giant"), and I love that she's getting in touch with her feminity and experimenting with dressing up. Rock on!

Underdog? I Don't Think So!: Style Underdog

She's been featured on Forbes' website (wow!) and one look explains why: she has got it going on. She's such a natural on camera (I've copied her poses, they're so perfectly "her"), and really knows her style. I would love to be at that Vegas meet-up!

Kindred Spirit in Thought if Not Clothes: The Dashing Eccentric

Seriously, Steph's awesome. I love her Victorian-inspired look (kind of mixed with steampunk only more casual) and practicality in her tiny but workable wardrobe, but her writing really gets me (I have this thing for great writers). Going camping? She'll tell you how to stay true to your style. Not to mention the whole "cake" and "icing" thing - what a light bulb moment!

Great Style Has No Age Limit: Thrifty Style at Sixty(two)

Rebecca is one of the all-time great thrifters, not only of clothes but of household treasures (her house is like an antique shop - I could spend hours browsing). She's also a very kind and thoughtful lady with an elegant sense of style.

Proving That Excellent Taste Has No Age Limit: fashion over fifty

Paula's over fifty and a very talented artist. She's also kooky and fun and knows how to shake up her style and play with her image - what a great role model!

Pregnant, Fashionable and Fabulous: Kelly in Beantown

Kelly's another one of the headless horde (she must be a spy or something super-secret, because I know she's got to be gorgeous). I love that she's pushing the boundaries of maternity fashion!

Goth in the Workplace Can Be Awesome: This is CorpGoth

As a former wannabe goth, I deeply love all the black and goth elements in Trystan's personal style, and how she shows how you don't have to be stuck in a rut to still strut your stuff AND look professional.

And that's it! As always, special shout-outs to the bloggers who are still getting it done fashion-wise and life-wise from 2009 and 2008 - I'm pleased to see that nearly every blogger I gave a Major Award to last year is still blogging! It's some kind of Style Nation miracle!

All the best to my fellow bloggers - stay real, have fun and be cool in 2011.

Come Walk With Me

I refuse to be sick, so even though I was exhausted when I dragged myself out of bed this morning, I put on my many layers of walking gear and left the house.

And it was raining. I deserve a medal or something!

It's grey and rainy on the West coast - that's just how it is this time of year. Could be worse: could be snow! I was really happy to see this forsythia trying valiantly to bloom:
And just to completely refute the myth that Canada is covered in snow, here's a palm tree:
I like the twisty gnarled tree in the foreground.

I have a thing for twisty trees and other foliage:
Isn't that awesome?

After I did a couple of kilometres through residential neighbourhoods, I finally hit the water:
That is the Pacific Ocean, baby! On clear days, that grey horizon line is the Olympic Mountains, and sometimes you can even see the US city at the base of them. Today, just a harbour plane coming in, and a big barge on the right.

I approach the coast with this on my right/back as I follow the shore turning left:
I love the weathered cliffs and inlets. The tide was really high today, but there's still lots of beach to walk on. I see at least one brave soul getting some exercise down there.

I took this shot looking down from the edge of one of the cliffs:
Oooh, that's a long way down. Back away, Danger-Prone Sheila!

This little point is popular for tourists:
It's also awesome for kite-flying and, when you're a teenager, "watching the submarine races". Heh, heh, which I know my mom and dad used to do. Sorry to break it to you, Mom, but I also parked down here a few times back in the day. Ah, memories.

Looking backwards:
Some days I head that way instead, but there's usually a lot of people out walking their dogs.

Way out in the straights, there's a small island with an unmanned lighthouse.
I would like to live in a lighthouse, maybe for a little while, like a year. Would you? I'd get caught up on all my reading.

This bay was really calm today. The last time I was out here, the waves were almost crashing over the road.
You can see how the driftwood gets pushed up.

The waves push it right up to the left side - there were lots of little bits of wood and kelp there.
Looking back to the point:
Waterlogged cedar and deep orange arbutus tree trunks. That large pebble texture is typical of a lot of beaches on the coast. Not exactly sand, but it's still nice on the feet in the summer.

I liked this long string of kelp:
Kelp's a type of seaweed, in case you didn't know.

Coming up on the deepest curve of the bay:
This is a hugely popular area for tour buses, people showing off our coastline, and exercisers. Not so many today - it was really pouring by now (about 1/2 an hour into my walk - this is the halfway point).

Check out this ginormous tree trunk:
That's a yellow double-decker tour bus coming around the bend. Even in January we have tourists.

Remember the graveyard I strolled through back in June? This is the view from the water:
One day, I'm sure the graveyard will start slipping into the sea - a few good storms should do it.

I watched these little black and white ducks going underwater for up to 20 seconds, looking for food:
Floating log for scale. When I was a kid, those logs were gold - so fun to ride on! But lots of splinters (cedar's terrible for that), and brrrr...this water is COLD.

I couldn't resist this cool driftwood "composition":
On the left is one of several rock berms that were constructed years ago to help keep the bay from eroding and causing coffin catastrope (as noted above).

Looking back at where I've come from:
Because that's always useful to do, literally and metaphorically.

I headed back home through more residential neighbourhoods (nothing exciting), cold and wet but at least I got in an hour's good exercise. Go, me!

We have a brief strata meeting tonight and I'm sure my patient husband is getting tired of seeing me in my robe or ratty jeans, so I dressed properly:
My corduroy skirt (last seen here), a simple top, a tweed jacket (last worn last February!) and tights - it looks deceptively dressy, but the soft shapes are actually very comfy. I did laundry in this (sans shoes).

Added a couple of accessories to amp up the excitement factor ("she's wearing real clothes!"):
It felt weird to be dressed. L was rather startled.

The stuff:
I distributed some of the shoes from my closet clean-out last week - not many of my friends have my size feet (size 9 to 9.5 to 10 or a Euro size 40), so whenever gals that size come over, I give away shoes that I've grown tired of. My friend Alison passed these ones along to thank me. They're Farylrobin (swoon, why can't I have unlimited shoes?). I like the little robin cutouts and the pale pink backing.

L bought me this cool necklace the other day while we were out:
"We'll always have Paris." The other side is a chandelier.

I added one of my new Plum belts to the outfit:
I think this was about $7 on clearance. I love the studs (they go all the way around). The belt's a bit long, so I knotted the long end.

Jacket and skirt (both Jacob Connexion, both consignment), top (RW & Co., swap from Ruth), shoes (Farylrobin, swap from Alison), belt (Plum), rose pin (Roberta's Hats), necklace (Lavishy).

Tick Tock, High Socks

Gah, I am so tired of being sick. I demand that I be well when I wake up tomorrow! Didn't the Sick Gods get my memo? I put a cover on it and everything!

Mom came by and took me for lunch today, so I thought I'd put on something that would be fit to be seen in public:
I really didn't want anything being too tight or constricting, so I went with tights, a baggy dress and thigh-high socks.

I felt so daring with the socks - but the tights helped keep them from being too risque. I picked the socks up in Florida in the store on the main floor of our hotel.

I've worn the dress many times before (last seen here), and those are my trusty black riding boots.
The socks have little buttons on the sides that are sewn with red thread. I quite like the effect, but two of the buttons have already popped off. The socks themselves remind me of sock monkeys.

I wore this new watch pendant that I got last week:
It was half price at Plum, for $14.00. I never wear a watch, so this is great for those few times when I actually need to keep time...or when I feel like playing with a menswear look. Groovy, eh?

Dress (Max Studio), boots (Aldo, consignment), socks (Steve Madden), watch pendant (Plum).

Happy New Year's!

I hope you all had an awesome New Year! We had a party, and I spent Saturday on the couch, then Sunday having food poisoning, so I'm getting back into blog life slowly.

I had planned to wear something entirely different, but then had a last-minute spaz and changed into this dress:L had bought me a top for Christmas, but it was too small - I returned it for this, as they didn't have any more of the top in stock at Plum. I fell in love with the dress when I tried it on - such a good fit.

I also found these shoes the other night while I was waiting to get my eyebrows waxed and then have drinks with Elaine:
They're pretty sweet - they were $50 on sale at Aldo (and they're leather).

My spazzitude was carrying over into my pictures (and I was running late with people arriving any minute!) - you can see my frustration.
And yeah, I just left my hair in "mad scientist" mode all night. It was fun.

Kitty always helps when I'm having a bad photo session:
L and I did our "fam" photo with Inigo:
L is so much taller than me (he's 5'10"), so you can't see his top hat, but doesn't he look dapper? Inigo looks awkward.

Oh, but let's move on! Shoes:
Yeah, those are pretty freakin' awesome.

The bling:
Those are my new-ish feather earrings I got while out shopping with Ruth before Christmas. The bracelet is a gift from Toronto from Elaine - I was admiring hers (which is a bit thinner and I think a different colour metal), and then she hauled this out for me! What a sweetie.

It's actually a long loop of articulated metal circles - you can shape it however you want:
Very bendy.

I had a lot of fun playing with it - and because it's metal, it's nice and strong.
I also (finally) printed out the picture that Megan did of me for my birthday (actual outfit seen here) and framed it, so now that is up instead of the Dolphins clock.

Dress (Max and Cleo), tights (Hue), shoes (Aldo), earrings (no brand), ring (Soul Power), bracelet/necklace (gift from Elaine).

Today, I dragged myself out of bed quite late, and L and I went out to our fave diner for lunch. I was all ready to take my casual outfit picture, but someone had other ideas:
He's standing right in my pose spot.

So I hunched down with him:
Silly kitty!

Inigo wouldn't move, so I just stood over him:
Psycho eyes and back-pointed ears! He's not happy.

T-shirt (Upper Playground), purple tee (Kersh), jeans (Seven7, swap from Caro), boots (Miz Mooz).
