I styled up my dear friend Caro after Book Club last night - she'd bought a beautiful handmade plaid silk dress in tones of burgundy and navy blue in Sidney, but didn't know what to wear with it to Nick's party on Saturday night. I loaned her boots, a belt and some jewelry, along with the Grape Ape coat, and now she's feeling fabulous.
"And this is relevant how?" "I'm sitting on the paper!"
I am also going to that party to on Saturday night, and had no idea what I was wearing! I needed to do some planning STAT, as we also have our usual Chosen Family New Year's Eve and the first party of the year the week after that. Not that I'm complaining.
"It sure sounds like complaining." "I love you!"
So outfit planning was on the agenda, followed by a session of doing ALL of my Christmas present wrapping for L and my family, some (more) of whom we are seeing on Christmas Day.
The cleaners had come in the morning, and Whateley was excited to check out the tub.
"I don't like this." "And....ready...pounce!"
I found an entire shelf of scarves on the floor. Who did this?
"I chased a ball..."
Indeed, there was a squishy ball tangled in the red fly scarf. Whateley is the scarf culprit - he is very interested in seeing what he can reach.
After chatting with Mom for a while, I ate my leftover pizza from Zambri's for lunch, and then raided my Dress Archive to see what appealed to me. It's been a few years for all of these dresses.
"They smell like another kitty."
Yes, it's likely that I hugged Vizzini in all of these. I know he liked chewing on the hem of the red dress.
I caught Whateley starting to chew and had to scoot him off.
"I'm going to go sniff all those presents you've left unattended."
So, these are the dresses that appealed to me. I tried everything on - some worked, some did not - and then decided which to wear to what event, and pulled shoes for each.
I last wore this floof-monster to my company gala holiday party in December 2022 (Miss Elliette, vintage 60s, thrifted; here, 3rd outfit) - this was a BIG party, with spouses, a DJ and the full dinner, and I had a feeling it would be the last one for a long while (it was), so really poured on the glam with this beautiful vintage 60s dress. The Verdict: Too tight and no stretch. Boo! Oh, well, maybe things will be different in a year or two. Back into the Archive it goes.
I've only worn this dress once, when I was a Space Android for our October 2022 party (French Connection, vintage 00s, thrifted; here, 3rd outfit).
The Verdict: Also, too small (and very short). Another time, or I might put this one for sale.
This tiger dress has been around! It was last worn here at that same Space Party in October 2022 by Caro, as Space Tiger. I took it back at a Winesday Clothing Swap here in November 2022 and it's been languishing in my Archive since.
It's by Holt Renfrew, from the 1970s, and the hem was thrashed when I got it. What did Klassy Sheila do? Stapled that hem to death. Carolyn got this at a previous swap, took all the staples out and did a half-assed machine hem on it. Atta girl!

The Verdict: It looks surprisingly good on my menopausal self! I felt awesome in it and it scratched the badass itch. I'm wearing this to Nick's party!
This wonderful "Post-It Note" dress is covered in tabs of orange and fuchsia silk on a body of stretchy black cotton-blend.
It's by Tangerine Jill, bought on consignment, and last worn here in September 2022.

The Verdict: A winner! Time to wear this again! This will be my New Year's Eve dress.
I've had this Stop Staring dress on my mind for a while. I bought it many years ago new (it's made in Canada) in Vancouver, but haven't worn it since here in June 2018!!
It clearly lost its appeal for me for a while, but I didn't want to get rid of it, and that's the whole point of a Dress Archive! Tastes change and evolve. What I loved in 2018, I didn't for a long time...but...
The Verdict: It still looks awesome on me, so woo! This will be my outfit for Tony and Alison's party in January!
So, although you're going to know what I'll be wearing, I still have to style each one - there is still a bit of surprise for you, I hope!
Phew, that was a fun session and so good for my mental health. I also put together a bunch of outfits for work leading up to my vacation time, and for Christmas Day. When I was done I put on "White Christmas" (the movie) and started wrapping presents.
"There's nothing interesting here." "I'm sitting on the Man's blanket!"
Shocking! They didn't react to any of it!
They've been little angels.
I haven't actually found the earring OR the black cat pin...
"Shhh, Barnabas, she hasn't notice the missing earring." "I ate a black wooden kitty brooch!"
My friends, I'm off now for the weekend, but will be back on Sunday with tales of adventure, including that party outfit! Thank you so much for being here!

You do glam like nobody else I know and am looking forward to seeing you all decked out for the three different celebrations! Shoes, jewelry, and any other accessories!
ReplyDeleteAs for the rain and having a jammy day at home, oh I so get that! We are having a day of rain with a Nor-easter forecast. Fred and I are both still in our jammies, it’s almost 9:00 and I’m only getting changed if a friend calls and invites me over (which was our plan last night but who knows where it will go this morning!)
Barnabas and Whateley entertained Fred this morning as he’s sitting next to me (and of course says HI). Ugh, just shuddering at the possibility that Barnabas is telling the truth and actually ate the kitty brooch. Yuck, I can only imagine his insides! ;-)
The Post-It Note and Stop Staring dresses are my favorites because of their length and supremely interesting styles.
Enjoy the day and hoping your Friday is, if not rain-free, at least rain-low-key!
Cheers, Laurie
Aw, thanks, Laurie! I'm excited to style everything up for our 3 parties! I find once I have that base "cake" piece (garment + shoes) then the fun part is adding all the "icing" in the accessories and styling.
DeleteThere have been floods, roads washed out, paths submerged! It's been a lot! Good luck with your version!
I expect I will find it chewed up one day, which is sad - I love that wee brooch - but sigh, it's just a thing. I don't think he ate it as he's still eating and pooping fine, lol.
They are lovely dresses - the Post-It one is quite short, but the Stop Staring is just past the knees.
Today/Friday has been sun/torrential downpour/sun/torrential downpour. I am hoping for a gap between showers on my walk home.
Thanks so much to you and Fred (hi, Fred!) for reading!
Lovely to have a look at your Dress Archive and what you've finally planned to wear!. I'm looking forward to seeing those dresses 'in action'!, love particularly that post-it note dress!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the inspiration to keep some dresses even if not wearing them frequently, it's a really great tip and a great naming!
I'm still amazed that those kitties ignored the shiny and noisy wrapping paper! ;DDD
besos
I have about 4 times this in my Dress Archive - these are only the pieces I felt like trying! I'll get a video of me shimmying in the Post-It dress so you can see the 'flaps' moving around!
DeleteI love having a collection of dresses I can dip into when I feel like it, and it's also good for loaning out to friends as needed.
I know! I was shocked!! They slept through the entire wrapping process!
I'm not surprised you backed off from Mom Day given the awful weather. I'm sure your Mom wouldn't have wanted you out in it, to visit. Let's hope the next time will be fine.
ReplyDeleteYou have done well to sort out your main items for these future party events. I will look forward to seeing how you dress them up. We also have some tartan gift wrap! I emptied a roll of paper the other day and felt sad that I didn't have a couple of cute kitties to play with the cardboard inner part!
I'm not often put off by bad weather, but I'm glad we skipped this week. I still have a few days of work and don't have a lot of time to prepare for the holidays.
DeleteI feel so good having done that! All that pressure is off - "this is what I'm wearing." I'm excited to style the outfits (my favourite part!).
I always like non-seasonal wrap, and tartan is a good year-round one.
Can't wait to see everything all styled up! Your party looks are always my favorite.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much, Charlotte! Good to see you!
DeleteThank you for the peek into your Dress Archive, Sheila! I've got a stash of dresses I haven't worn for a long time but do not want to get rid of, so calling it a Dress Archive would make me feel less guilty about keeping them. Anyway, I fully approve of your choices, and can't wait to see how you'll style them.
ReplyDeleteApart from the missing earring and cat pin, it looks like the boys were on their "best" behaviour. I would never succeed in wrapping presents without Bess trying to help :-) xxx
That's only a fraction of it, Ann! The kitties have been pretty good, but my jewelry is definitely getting targeted, as multiple earrings are being found on the floor.
DeleteThe Dress Archive! I'm taking a leaf out of your book and reclaiming a few dresses I'd earmarked for the Kinky Shed!!
ReplyDeleteWhat a clever use of your time - tryong on those frocks and getting party ready. They look fab on the hangers and I know that they'll look even better on you and accessorised to perfection.
I'm glad the lads weren't as naughty as they looked! xxx
It is very helpful, and means that I can loan out my dresses or just save them with no pressure. Trying it all on really took the pressure off!
DeleteThey're still naughty! They've been stealing jewelry (I'm sure it's mostly Whateley).
Fun to see the dress archive. It is always a good idea to try on a dress and decide before an event, it takes the pressure off.
