Two-Fer: Tweed to Cowgirl for Corb, and the Happy Jacket

Woo, miss me? L and I and some friends went to a concert last night and I didn't have time (or the inclination) to post, so today's a two-fer. For those of you who are not Canadian, that means you get two fer the price of one.
Outfit number one! I wanted to wear some sage green to link up to Anne's "52 Pick-Me-Up" at SpyGirl! Are you sage? Or do you just put it in your stuffing?

  • Blouse - Ralph Lauren, thrifted; first worn here in November 2015 with cognac leather pants
  • Skirt - Precis Petite; last seen here in October 2015 with orange and this same necklace
  • Shoes - Hilary Radley, thrifted; last worn here at the same time as this shirt, in November 2015

A fairly sedate outfit, made interesting by adding the lacy fishnet tights.

The lovely Anna of Anna's Island Style (go wish her a Happy Birthday!) asked me in the comments yesterday about my distinction between thrifting and consignment. She's from the UK so perhaps the terminology is different; I have read about "op shops" and "charity shops" which sound like thrift stores to me.
Thrift shops: They resell donated items, are usually run by a charity. Examples: St. Vincent de Paul, Value Village (proceeds to Big Brothers/Big Sisters here), Salvation Army, WIN (Women in Need), and the Hospice Store (sadly now closed). Prices are generally pretty low, although some thrift stores mark their stuff up for "boutique"/higher end name brands. They often have "spot" sales, like all green tags are 50% off, or "red star" items are 25% off. The stores generally don't have much in the way of displays, and no real service. Quality varies and you're lucky if there is one fitting room.

Semi-thrift shops: These are in the hazy middle ground, between true thrift and consignment. They aren't run by charities, but they aren't as nice as consignment stores. They tend to carry a lot of bulk items. Examples that I shop at in town are The Patch (lots of vintage, bulk clearance items), Flavour Upstairs and Duchess and Duke. The Patch doesn't take donations or items for resell - all of their goods are sourced elsewhere. Flavour Upstairs takes items and either pays the seller a very small amount (eg. $5.00 for a pair of boots that they might sell for $20.00) or a slightly larger credit towards more purchases (like $7.50 credit instead of $5.00 cash for those boots). Both stores have very high turnover and mark down items quickly for sale. The stores are nicer than thrift stores and you can find more recent items mixed with vintage. Better displays, but you're generally left alone by the staff. There are usually monitored fitting rooms.

I refer to both of the above as "thrifted" for the goods I purchase there.

Consignment: These stores review all items brought in, and may reject items that don't fit their clientele or are not in good enough condition (some insist that all goods are dry cleaned before taking them), or not a high-end name brand. The seller leaves the items for a fixed period (usually 90 days or so), and if the item sells, they get a percentage of the selling price (usually 30-40%). If the item doesn't sell, you can pick it up and try it somewhere else or mark it to donate. You would generally sign a contract as well. Consignment stores that I shop at are My Sister's Closet, The Velvet Crease, Rich Rags and Verve, with Rich Rags and My Sister's Closet being the lower end and The Velvet Crease and Verve being higher end. Prices tend to be much higher than thrift, but the quality is better and you can get service if you need help. The stores have nice displays, nice fitting rooms and the stock changes more slowly. They tend to have good sale racks - many bargains to be had there!

I hope that helps explain, Anna!
I did a skirt and boot swapperoo for a concert last night. L and I went to see Corb Lund (link here 'cause I love).

  • Skirt - Danier Leather, thrifted; first worn here in November 2015 while vibing with leopard
  • Boots - 1883 Lucchesse, consignment; last seen here (3rd outfit) in December 2015 with stripes

We walked to town and had dinner (Jamaican, yum!), and walked home after, so comfy shoes were the order of the evening.

The stuff:
Outfit number one's shoes.

And outfit number two's shoes:
Such sweet cowboy boots!

Chunky bling:

I wore the same things with both outfits.

  • Necklace - Plum
  • Earrings - thrifted

I took a few pictures, but mostly I just enjoyed myself.
The venue was the McPherson Theatre - I like the view looking out onto Centennial Square. Pretty lights!

The Mac is not as fancy as the Royal Theatre, but it's a nice venue.
Gold ceiling and gold leaf everywhere.

Here's a review from the local rag about the concert.
The opening act was Daniel Romano.

I liked his songs - they were beautiful - but his voice is like a nasally Bob Dylan.
Not my bag, baby.

We've seen Corb Lund below, but not in his country guise.
He used to be the bassist for the band The Smalls, which we went to see here in November 2014 when they did a reunion tour.

I am not a huge fan of the cowboy stuff, but boy, the rest of the audience was!
They were loud and rowdy (there was alcohol at the venue and it was allowed into the theatre).

I have a crush on Corb - good-looking dude!
I especially liked it when he put his glasses on (swoon!) and a silver-grey leather coat (swoon!) for the encore.

I was getting antsy with the crowds and didn't want to wait around to meet him.
Close enough! You can also check out L's review of the concert and Corb's latest album here.

Today, I was pretty tired, as we got home past 11pm. This old bag needs her sleep!
Let's just fool 'em all with colour!

  • Jacket - Paparazzi, thrifted; last worn here in April 2015 during the battle of the yellow dresses
  • Shirt - Tommy Hilfiger, thrifted; purchased here for $14.95 (see my note above about thrift stores marking up "boutique" items)
  • Skirt - BB Dakota, consignment; last seen here earlier this month in another two-fer, with flowers
  • Shoes - Marc; last worn here in December 2015 with plaid and leather

I had a lot of positive reactions to this jacket/coat, including people stopping me on the street to tell me it was a "happy coat" and shouting, "Colours!" at me. Yes, these are colours.

I liked the yellow of the skirt popping off the coat.
Add a little red and we are good to go!

The stuff:
I got home quite late (worked 2.5 hours overtime), and my table was not available.

  • Silk bow tie - John Comfort for Harry Rosen, vintage, thrifted for $3.95
  • Earrings - thrifted for $10.00

Both of the accessories were purchased at the same time as the white shirt.

And now, my friends, I am tired and hungry! Off I go!

Totally Tartan, If Purple is a Clan

I'm pretty sure there is no purple tartan in the clan listing of such things.
Sign me up if they ever create one, though! I've already got my pouffy skirt!

  • Leather shirt - Danier Leather, thrifted; last seen here in December 2015 with vintage picadors
  • Skirt - Roland Kerry, vintage 80s, consignment; last worn here in December 2015 for an epic escape
  • Boots - Miz Mooz; last seen here, again in December 2015, with houndstooth and reds

I felt very bright and colouful, even though the black leather shirt keeps me from exploding in a rainbow. I have red tights on, although you can't see them - I know they're there! It's a grey day today, so I needed colour.
I had a dentist appointment in the late afternoon, so I'm home a bit early. Off to the gym shortly!

The stuff:
Much red.

  • Earrings - Tania Gleave
  • Ring - Oscar & Libby's

Visible Weekend: Fully Fringed

Happy Weekend! I've had a lovely, relaxing time. A lot of it involved fringe.
All the fringe!

  • Topper - Design Lab by Lord & Taylor; last seen here in November 2015 with red leather pants
  • Sleeveless sweater - August Silk, thrifted; last worn here in December 2015 with the great Muppet skirt
  • Suede skirt - Pioneer Wear, thrifted; first worn here in November 2015
  • Shoes - Poetic Licence; last seen here with this topper in November 2015

Today has been nothing but football - I'm lounging around in my jeans and jersey. My beloved Carolina Panthers are going to the Super Bowl! We won today! Woo! There will be much bragging in the office tomorrow.

I wore this outfit to brunch on Saturday morning, followed by a quick run of errands with L. After a lovely nap in the afternoon, we headed out to Janet & Ray's for a 6-person dinner party that ended with dancing in the kitchen. All the fringe on the skirt and the topper moved most satisfactorily.
Swoosh-o-rama! I'm linking up to Patti's "Visible Monday" over at Not Dead Yet Style. Get over there!

The stuff:
We bused to dinner, but ended having to walk for 15 minutes as the bus didn't go that far on Saturdays. Fortunately, these shoes are fine for walking.

  • Cuff -  Guess, thrifted
  • Red cuff - Rimanchik
  • Earrings - gift from Megan

And now I shall bask in victory for two weeks, until my team faces the Denver Broncos in the big game. Whatever shall I wear?

Fan Friday - Panthers Jersey and Versace Mom Jeans

As I'm running an informal NFL Playoffs pool at work over the next couple of weeks, I chose today to show my team colours. Go, Carolina Panthers!
We will beat the Arizona Cardinals, and be in the Super Bowl!

  • Jersey - NFL Shop, gift from L
  • Jeans - Versace, vintage late 80s/early 90s, thrifted; first worn here in December with embroidered velvet
  • Shoes - Diba, thrifted; first seen here in November when our trees fell down
Why am I a Carolina Panthers fan? I live nowhere near Carolina, and I don't know anyone from there. The closest team to me is Seattle, geographically (they are my 3rd favourite team, after L's Miami Dolphins, of course). I'm so glad you asked!

I started watching NFL football in 1995, the year I met L. The following year, two new teams entered the NFL as expansion teams (whole new teams created): the Carolina Panthers and the Jacksonville Jaguars. Well, instead of bandwagoning onto the Dolphins (so predictable), I decided that I wanted to be a fan of a team right from the start. "I'm an original fan," I could say proudly in 20 years. We had a black cat (Othello) and I didn't want to pick another Florida team, so the Panthers it was.
Who has two thumbs and loves Luke Kuechly?
And here we are, 20 years later.

Second wearing of the Versace Mom jeans, and holy smokes I love them. I need to glam them up with some really high heels at some point, though. They deserve better than a jersey and flats.

The stuff:
Cheap little flats. They did the job.

  • Earrings - white gold, 10th anniversary gift from L

And now, off to start my weekend with some wine and board games with L! My social calendar is packed to the gills over the next couple of months, so I am looking forward to the downtime this weekend to recuperate. Have a good weekend!

Strapless, Textured and Patterned

Okay, one more day. I can do this!
It rained all day, and was really dark and gloomy this morning.

  • Blouse - CABi, consignment; last seen here (2nd outfit) under sequins for a theatre date with Mom in September 2015
  • Dress - Club Monaco, consignment; last worn here in August with a fruital blouse
  • Shoes - Poetic Licence; last seen here in October 2015 with my sailor dress (and the same obi!)

"Posing again? Rather full of yourself, aren't you, woman?"
I really liked all the textures visually represented here: pinstripes (the dress), paisley (the blouse), chairs and cross-hatching (the obi) and lacy (the tights). Plus, matchy colours!
"Your slippers smell like you."
My WW group loved this outfit, as did my coworkers. Mostly I just waved my floppy accordion cuffs at them.

The stuff:
Sweet Shoes of Awesome! These are my favourite pair I've ever owned (so far), and they're not even Fluevog! I know, shocking!

Red bling:
I had a dry spell with wearing obis, but now I'm feeling the pendulum shift to wearing them again.

  • Obi - Smoking Lily
  • Ring - Oscar & Libby's
  • Earrings - Tania Gleave

L has a house full of people, so now I'm going to enjoy an evening reading in the bedroom. Me, some tea and a warm kitty. This is the life.

Green Machine - In the Limelight

I was a machine today - albeit a very grumpy, cranky machine. It was one of those days.
When you're glad you wore some fantastically shiny armour to ward off all the bad mojo floating around.

  • Coat/jacket - Desigual; last seen here (4th outfit) in March 2015 worn as a jacket
  • Top - Mossimo, thrifted; last worn here in August 2015 with a Gaga-ish outfit
  • Skirt - Alfred Sung, vintage 80s, consignment; last seen here in July 2015 with peach
  • Shoes - Big Presence Desmond, Fluevog; last worn here (4th outfit) with emerald green satin

It was a busy day, and I'm being picked up for Book Club in a few minutes, so zoom, here we go.

Fab coat, isn't it? It's light enough in winter to wear it as a jacket in the office, which is what I did all day.
I also wore it as my outerwear, walking to and from work today. I buttoned it all the way up and wore purple gloves.

I've been hemming and hawing about this skirt, but it's a keeper. It always is.
Deliberately ragged hem, and look at that fabulous lace! Green lame! (lah-MAY, dahling).

Some jacket details. I've got a peacock on me.
All sewn, so stunning.

I love how Desigual does all different buttons.
I've got my eye on you, Vizzini!
It's like wearing a work of art. Anne, I couldn't find any "lime slime", but I hope all these greens will fit into your theme - one of them has to be Kelly green! Go check it out here at Spygirl!

The stuff:
Shiny, shiny shoes! I always feel like a schtar in these!

Copper bling:
Two pieces I picked up at vintage fairs over the years. I had bracelets on each wrist in the top pictures, but you can't see them at all with the jacket, so I took them off before I left the house this morning.

  • Necklace/earrings - Renoir, vintage early 60s, vintage fairs

Thank you for all the suggestions on what to wear with yesterday's sweater! I know it'll go with lots of black bottoms, but ugh, black is so dull. It hangs down quite low, so the bottom piece needs to be slim - either a pencil skirt or skinny pants - not puffy/full. I will keep trying!

Grey Daze and Not-Leather

It's been grey, grey, grey for the last few days. I am sick of it, I tell you.
So what did I do? I wore grey. D'oh!

  • Top - Eric Alexandre, thrifted; purchased here for $3.00
  • Skirt - Bianca Nygard; last worn here in September 2014 with yellow while being the Mayor of Matchytown
  • Boots - Marc; last seen here (2nd outfit) with the fabulous pink Muppet skirt

It's lighter in the evenings now, walking home. But I could use some sunshine.

First wearing of this new-to-me top. I liked the fake leather front on it - it's very thin and soft (and all my little spills wiped right off!).
"Cat bomb!"
I actually couldn't find much in my closet that went with the vibe of top, so not sure how long it will last. What would you pair with a top like this? I went with a pencil skirt with some blue in the embroidery, and I guess a black leather (of course) skirt would work. But what else?

The stuff:
I noticed today that the little zipper pull is missing off one of my boots. Hmmm...I wonder what happened to that? Vizzini??

  • Necklace - Nygard, consignment
  • Cuff - Midzo, vintage expo

Pearl Tie, Matchy Hair and Pouffy Butt

I was lazy in planning my outfit last night, so I had to do some scrambling in the morning. It really helps speed things along when you know what you're wearing.
Lack of planning often means a crazy outfit - like this one!

  • Shirt - Banana Republic, thrifted; last worn here in November 2015 with all the studs
  • Skirt - Quilaree, consignment; last seen here in November 2015 with Lacroix and red boots
  • Shoes - Miista; last seen here in December 2015 with rad green

It's getting lighter in the mornings! This was my view when taking the stair picture.
There's a crappy-looking movie being advertised right now, called "The Boy" (it looks like a horror movie) and it was obviously filmed at Craigdarroch Castle up there.

Anyway, back to the bizarro outfit. I built it around the pearl tie - so had to wear a button-up shirt. Of course, we must match the hair. Everyone loves it when I match my clothes to my hair.
I liked the pouffy skirt...but then needed something at the waist - the stomacher will do.
Then shoes! It's Monday and I knew I'd have to walk to the other office to take a new employee to his desk, so no heels for me. Menswear shoes in the form of my trout shoes, and oh heck, let's wear these little socklet things and take to 11, shall we?

The stuff:
I love these shoes. So, so much.

Pearly bling:
The tie got a lot of positive comments - the overall outfit in general was well-liked, but mostly by my male colleagues.

  • Stomacher - InWear
  • Belt - Plum
  • Tie necklace - thrifted
  • Earrings - Aldo Accessories

This morning as I was leaving, I did my usual check to make sure Vizzini wasn't trapped in a closet or in the library. There he was, having what looks like a serious conversation with the mousie.
"Do you mind? My deputy and I are having a de-brief."
I'm sure mousie received a mauling after I left.
