Crazy Saturday - Weekend Wear (and a Book Blurb)

Saturday was a nutty day! I had to get to my WW meeting early to 'shadow' my mentor, then meet up with Elaine for lunch and an afternoon of thrift shopping. Then I had Winesday!

Unfortunately, the bus came early and I was late to WW (nice way to start, Sheila!), then my meeting/mentoring went way longer than anticipated and I was 45 minutes late for lunch with Elaine (ack! I bought her lunch), then of course, our shopping took longer...and I still had to get home to prepare for Winesday, and my mp3 player's headphones broke! You'd think it was a full moon or something! Fortunately, everyone (including my husband, who I ranted at for several minutes) was very understanding and nice about it. I hate being late for anything!

Anyway, after Saturday, I spent today watching football. Ah...

Clothing considerations: the forecast called for snow (yikes!), I had to weigh in, and shopping conditions (see my post here for how I put together a shopping outfit).

And here's what I ended up with: My recently-purchased sweater dress (layered with thick tights and a cami underneath for added warmth), first seen here. My belt is easy to take off, as are the boots (no zip, they pull on and off).

I can't stand dealing with a huge bulky coat when I shop, so I wore accessories that I could fold up small and tuck in my purse when shopping:
My new short coat did the trick, as did my fuzzy beret, black thin pashmina scarf and insulated velvet gloves.

Dress (Eric Alexandre), belt (Shi Studio), coat (Mario Serrani), boot (Miz Mooz).

I finished my last Book Club book this weekend: "The Glass Castle" by Jeannette Walls.Stats: Paperback, 288 pages. Started November 7th, finished November 17th. Karen's pick for Book Club.

Blurb: I enjoy autobiographies, and this is easily one of the best I've read. Jeannette Walls is able to write about her "free spirit" parents' behaviour and choices (like moving a family of 5 to a shack in the desert, or deciding to become homeless in New York City) in a way that is matter-of-fact and many times heartbreakingly sad, but avoids blaming her parents for their decisions. It's hard not to condemn her parents for her childhood, but her own attitude of "this is how it was" avoids placing blame - the reader is able to see where the parents were coming from and understand them, even if you don't agree with their lives.

This was an easy read. Anecdotes are told in short bites, usually no more than 3-4 pages (making this a great reading-in-bed book), but are succinct and poignant. I strongly recommend this. Great book. I plan on reading Walls' other book "Half Broke Horses," about her grandmother's life.

Casual Friday: Floofy Layers

Ah, Friday! How long you have taken to arrive this week! However, I forgive you now that you're here, aside from that trip to the dentist this morning. Thank goodness I have a nice boozy dinner planned for this evening with my old boss from Fairweather, Tammy. Yee haw!

I'd planned to wear my new combat boots with today's outfit (the ones in my concert-going outfit here), but they just didn't look right. I'll take some time this weekend and build an outfit around them. Perhaps I'll document how I build an outfit - would anyone be interested in that?

Anyway, this is the outfit, and shoes I ended up wearing:
Someone (I've forgotten who) in Style Nation wore a denim dress recently and I gushed over it and I said, "I need to wear my denim dress again!" so here it is. Sorry, I have a terrible memory - thank you for the inspiration, Inspiring Blogger!

I've worn this dress a billion times* as seen here, here, here, here, here and here, and probably a few times before that. I'm wearing a grey cami underneath the dress, and my black velvet vest (as seen multiple times here) over top.

*numbers may be estimated
The underskirt is my black floofy Noa Noa one (last seen in my Hallowe'en costume, but last worn normally here).

The shoes are going to go sit in the "take these to the cobbler" bag for approximately a year (i.e. until I remember to take them in) to get them re-heeled as the stupid plastic heel caps are down to the nails after only one previous wear. I hope I don't have to walk on any hardwood floors!

Jewelry:
Got sort of a burnished silver thing going on.

My tights are new - the colour is called "cobblestone":
Leg on table pose! You can see the nice herringbone texture here.

So, I keep forgetting to mention, I am training to become a leader at Weight Watchers! As you may or may not know, I lost a lot of weight about five years ago, starting in 2006 (I did a post on it here). I have maintained my weight for 3.5 years (I hit goal in early 2007 and became a Lifetime member in May 2007), and I continue to go to my Saturday morning Weight Watchers meetings every week I can for the support, and to give and get inspiration from my fellow women and men who are on their own weight loss journeys.

A couple of weeks ago, one of the receptionists (of course, I know everyone at my meeting) asked if I had thought about becoming a leader. I considered it, interviewed on Monday with the Territory Manager (it was very informal) and did a webinar on Tuesday. Tomorrow, I shadow my mentor leader, and then next weekend, I do two days of intense training. I am pretty excited about this - it's not a full-time job (heck, it's not even part-time), but it's something I think I can do to give back. And it's something I can do while I look for work.

Note: I don't intend to push WW through this blog, but I've always been up-front about being a member. It's just a program that works for me, and I like it. I'm not getting any compensation for talking about WW, and I don't want any. You won't see any WW ads on my blog, or any other ads (I am not a personal fan of blogs loaded with ads - that's not how I roll, baby - but I don't judge what other people do with their blogs. We're all one big Style Nation family, right?).

Anyway, I'm looking forward to this new adventure (think of the outfits!) and wanted to share it.

Dress (Ricki's), vest (Surrey Classics, consignment), skirt (Noa Noa), belt (Plum), tights (Hue), shoes (Miss Sasa, consignment), earrings (Aldo Accessories), ring (can't remember, maybe Nine West?), cuff (St. Paul's Cathedral gift shop), necklace (handmade).

Marigold Repeat and Snakes

Even though it hasn't even been a week, I'm wearing this sweater again:
Reason? I only wore it for a few hours on Friday night, the restaurant was dark and dammit, no one saw it. Yes, I'm vain - I have a fashion blog, ha ha! I have no issue with that.

I almost forgot about this skirt - it is one of my favourites and I've only had it a year (last worn here, with links to previous wears). I have a lot of skirts in my closet, so sometimes they get lost in there.

It's a bit hard to tell, but I'm wearing purple tights. Of course.
Inigo and I have a moment.

The stuff:
My fab shortie cowboy boots.

The punky stuff:
Snakes abound! My vintage 80s (*choke* I can't believe I just called the 80s "vintage") ring and pin. I pinned the snake brooch over the tab on the collar of the sweater.

Sweater (Pria), skirt (Le Chateau), boots (Miz Mooz), belt (Jacob), cuff (old), ring (80s), pin (gift from Mom & Dad, 80s).

S.U.C.E.B.W.E.

I felt like my outfit was very Style Underdog today - not really sure why, but what the hell! It's S.U.C.E.B.W.E.:
Style Underdog's
Color Explosion Birthday Week
Extravaganza!
S.U.C.E.B.W.E
Happy S.U.C.E.B.W.E.! (edit: I am so bad with acronyms. I think I have them all correct now)
I felt great in this outfit all day, aside from forgetting every time I wear them that these shoes always slip in the heels. Must remember to buy heel grips!

I just love the leopard top (first seen here), and this is also the second wearing of the royal purple pencil skirt (previously here).

I tried to emulate SU's brilliant posing:
Hmmm. I need sunglasses.

I haven't worn these shoes in over a year! Wow, that was an oversight.

The stuff:
Mmm...those are such a nice shape. I love my Calvins.

The shiny stuff:
Mom's vintage chain belt, my spring ring and my classic real gold giant hoops. Love.

Jacket (Banana Republic, thrifted), blouse (Planet, consignment), skirt (Jacob), shoes (Calvin Klein "Gabby"), belt (70s, Mom's), ring (Aldo Accessories), earrings (gift from L).

I'll Fly Away

Dang, I hate that it's dark out when I take my pictures now - I have every light in the house on, the 'backlight' on my camera on, and still, all the colours look muddy and dark. Where's my cute guy with the light reflector? I'm sure L won't mind, hee.

This is my new top that I got at Winners last Friday:
I am not usually one to go with pastels (this is mostly mint green), or those "slash" dye jobs, but I liked the purple, burgundy, blue pattern over the green and the top looked cute on. Okay, the $10 price tag also convinced me.

In case you can't tell, I'm wearing burgundy boots (last seen here), a brown lace skirt (last seen here) and a purple long-sleeved tee (I had also packed my navy underflounce skirt, but it was too short to show under this skirt). Hmmm...my "teeth" necklace barely shows. What's up with that?

I liked the sleeves on this tee - something a little different. I've got wings!
It's also been a year since I started doing pee-pushups (have you been doing yours? scroll down) and I love that my arms are nice and shapely and strong!

The stuff:
Mmmm...shiny red boots...

A close-up:
You can see what I mean by the "slash" dye job.

Tee (Casual Freedom), long-sleeved tee (Press), skirt (Planet), boots (Aldo outlet), earrings (gift from Elaine), necklace (The Bay).

Metric, Monday and Mauve

This fall is all about concerts! I love going to gigs, but not many groups come to my city. In addition to Mr. Cohen later this month, we also went to see Metric last night. I've been a fan for several years and I think they are just starting to hit big in the US. It's always weird when a band I've known forever suddenly becomes "big" - remember when Barenaked Ladies hit big in the US? Yeah, they'd been around for a decade before that.

Anyway, if you're not familiar with Metric, they are a great dance/pop band with an awesome female lead singer. Their site is here - you can listen to some of their songs in the little TV graphic in the upper right corner (I recommend "Help I'm Alive", "Gimme Sympathy" and "Stadium Love").

A bunch of us met up beforehand for barbecue and beer - a concert is always fun with lots of friends! I kept it cool:
Casual uniform top, jeans and my new boots. Good thing I went mellow as we were about double the age of most of the attendees. Some days you just feel old...

A shot of the boots done up:
I'll wear them with a proper outfit later this week and show off the details. Ha! I'm such a tease.

Long-sleeved tee (Plum), tee (Plum), jeans (Esprit), boots (Jenny Loves Kenny), jacket (corporate swag).

And it's Monday. And I'm really tired from the concert (*yawn* past my bedtime). So I went with a pretty easy outfit:
The purple (mauve, get it? get it?) drapey cardigan is new. I can't just sit here and watch all of you rocking the drapey cardis and not want to get in on it! I'll probably belt it next time, but I didn't have a belt that went with olive, chartreuse and mauve. It was $24.99 at Winners.

If you didn't notice, I've had a slight change of hair:
Got sick of my "dog ears" so told my hairdresser to do whatever she wanted. I'm never that attached to my hair - it's just hair, it grows back.

A close-up of all my matchy-matchiness:
Erm...I forgot to crop before I shrunk it, so you get to see how messy my closet is. The foreground is one of my shoe shelves where I perch the camera. My sweaters are rather haphazard, but at least my shirts are all hung up nicely!

The stuff:
You can see the nice texture in the cardi fabric. It was very comfortable.

A close-up of the baubles:
Mmmm...I love chartreuse and mauve together.

Cardigan (Bobeau), top (Ellen Tracey, gift from Caro), skirt (Club Monaco, consignment), shoes (Enzo Angiolini, thrifted), necklace (Oscar & Libby's), earrings (don't remember), ring (Guess).

Dinner Out Friday and Saturday Casual Wear

I had a quick nap after shopping on Friday, then got dressed for dinner out with some friends. I wanted to wear this new sweater I found at Winners:
Isn't that a great colour? I am so grooving on that marigold yellow right now.

That's my suede skirt that I wore first here, and those are my favourite boots (last seen here).

I have a really tough time with big sweaters, because they almost always have high turtlenecks or big cowl necks. As a woman who's...er...gifted...in the boobular region, those are no-nos for me. So when I look for sweaters, I try to find open necklines like this:
That gives the look of a cowl, but is nice and wide and shows off my collar bones - and distracts from the boobage.

Sweater (Pria), skirt (Danier Leather, thrifted), boots (Indigo by Clarke's, consignment), belt (Anne Klein pour Caleche, consignment).

L and I are going to see Leonard Cohen again this month, so my tour t-shirt made an appearance today for my Weight Watchers outfit:
I've worn this tee and stripey top several times before (here, here (ha, that's another Winners shopping trip!) and here after the last concert in 2009). I stripped off the belt before weighing in!

I wore my new cobalt blue wooly coat:
I love the semi-military look of it and the off-centre buttons. This was on sale at Winners for $59.00.

Coat (Mario Serrani), t-shirt (Leonard Cohen tour shirt), striped top (Majestic, gift from Caro), skirt (Club Monaco, consignment), belt (gift from Ruth), tights (Hue), boots (Miz Mooz).

Shopping Trip! How I Shop at Winners

Ah, I just love a long weekend - Thursday was a holiday in Canada (Remembrance Day), so I took Friday off too. The lovely Cat also had the day off, so we met up for brunch and went shopping at Winners (I had my $60 gift card to spend!).

A trip to Winners is not to be taken lightly. Many people find it overwhelming: all those racks just jammed with clothes, people and shopping carts everywhere, and so much to look at! It's exhausting just thinking about it.

That's why I plan very carefully in advance, starting with what I'm going to wear. I nearly always wear a dress to shop at Winners (or any other big store, like Value Village) simply because it's easy to take on and off. Who wants to mess with jeans or a button-up shirt in a fitting room? Not me!

I've numbered my key areas below:
1. Earrings: small rhinestone studs. They're not going to snag on anything that I try on, or likely to go flying off if I pull tops overy my head.

2. Wide neckline: this makes it easier to get the dress on and off without messing up my hair, knocking my glasses off or rubbing off my makeup on to my clothes.

3. Statement necklace: no rough edges anywhere on this, so no snagging on sweaters. It also helps keep this outfit from being totally boring.

4. Tights: these pair also have control top, so if I'm trying on any skirts or dresses, I know exactly how they are going to fit. I also went with a neutral colour (these are heathered grey) so that they don't distract from whatever I'm trying on. Tights are not useful if you're shopping for pants, however - if I were shopping for jeans or dress pants, I'd go bare-legged but with high socks and boots.

5. Slip-on low-heeled shoes: I walked to town in these, then shopped for 3 hours, then walked home from town. My feet felt fine! Slip-on shoes are essential for shopping; messing about with buckles or laces is a huge pain when you're trying on shoes, or have to take off your shoes to try on a dress, skirt or pants.

Dress (Max Studio), tights (probably Hue), shoes (Kenneth Cole Reaction, gift from Cat), necklace (Shi Studio).

It was a nice sunny, but crisp, day. Shopping in outerwear can be exceedingly annoying; there's nothing worse than getting sweaty and feeling bulky when you're shopping - it will wear your patience. I went with a thin 3/4-sleeved jacket:
This allows me to get my hands right into the racks without sleeve cuffs getting in the way.

A few warm accessories keeps me from freezing my butt off:
Someone was hiding in the side of the photo (see him?).

Long suede gloves to fill in the gap with the short jacket sleeves, and a nice wooly soft cashmere scarf (thin and lightweight). Both of those items easily went into my purse while I shopped.

Jacket (Smart Set), scarf (Club Monaco), gloves (Le Chateau), bag (Ollie & Nic).

Heading to the mall in the Loser Cruiser!
Oh yeah! I find riding the bus a very Zen-like experience. You miss a bus...another will come. There is no stress...you just get off when you want.

And we arrive!
The store is starting to get their Christmas stuff in (already? man!).

We headed to the hosiery, belts and purses section first:
Scouted for deals - I always find interesting stuff in the hosiery department.

I always use a shopping cart at Winners. Just toss everything you are even remotely interested in into the cart, and sort through it later. If you plan to go back for something, odds are that it'll be gone when you return.

Cat and I have a good start: some knee-highs for me, some tights and a belt for her:
I always head to the shoe department next (I get very excited about shoe departments, giddy almost). Check out the awesome boots I found: They're sort of a black-purple mix. Love the studs, too. I squealed about these for a good hour. I'll be wearing these soon!

I also do a scout of the mens' shoe section - I know how L's shoes fit on my feet so I am pretty good at picking out shoes for him. These rockin' shoes were too good to pass up, especially at $32.00:
He loved them!

After we combed all the shoe racks (you have to check through all the size sections, because people move things around), we headed over to the clothes section:
Dresses and outerwear first. I go through the clearance sections, then scout through for anything that catches my eye. Because I already have a black winter coat and several black dresses, I narrowed my focus to colour.

We then moved into the actual clothing sections, dragging our shopping cart with us and parking it at the end of the aisles so we could keep an eye on it and make sure no one pilfered our fab finds.

I start at one end and work my way down:
I search for interesting colours, patterns and clothing that feels nice. I'll also check out how an item is faring from being handled on the racks. Satins that are getting fuzzy in the shoulders and cashmere sweaters that are starting to pill just from being together are a big "no, thanks" for me.

The racks are not as scary as they seem, because there is so much duplication. You're likely to see the same sweater 50 times in all sizes. This makes the racks faster to go through, since you can skip over the duplicates and watch for the unique items.

By the time we've done the racks, it's been about 2.5 hours of shopping. I'm getting tired! Time to head for the fitting rooms, which are back in the shoe department.

Because they only allow a limited number of items in the fitting room, we parked our cart and started going through stuff we could try on in the aisle, like sweaters, coats and jackets:
You can eliminate a lot of things this way, and save yourself time in the fitting room. I tried on a coat, 3 sweaters and a jacket (as well as those boots again) in front of the big mirror.

I only had to take 4 things into the fitting room, which sped things up and made the try-on experience much easier. I ended up with a sweater, a cardigan, a top, some knee-highs and a pair of boots! I'll be wearing them all this week!

And that's how I shop at Winners! This type of shopping strategy also works in other large department store type of environments, like Value Village or a big thrift store.

(Note: I have no affiliation with Winners - this is just one of the places that I shop a couple times a year. No compensation was received by me for this feature.)

Not Quite Over - Tall Boots Redux

After yesterday's mind-f**k, I decided to go with what I'd planned for my formerly last day: my thigh-high boots:
Last seen here. This is basically a repeat of this outfit, only with the boots and slightly different accessories.

I rarely repeat outfits, but I love this top so much - but it's hard to wear! Not many things go with an asymmetrical hem, let me tell you.
It's also cold out and the heating in the office hasn't been working for several weeks, so I need that extra warmth.

Thank you all for your kind thoughts, congratulations and good advice. I don't plan to stay past this month (I have a holiday booked in December), and I made sure that my "golden carrot" is not being reduced - I will get an extra month's pay out of this (nothing to sneeze at). The months leading up to the end of the year are brutal for job-hunting, so I'd planned to take them off anyway.

The stuff:
The boss is taking us out for a long expensive lunch today. Yum!

Cardigan (Express, consignment), top (Zara, consignment), pants (Kensie), boots (Pegabo), multi-strand necklace (Plum), single neckace (2028), gold hoops (gift from L).

An Unexpected Reprieve

Would you believe...?

After I spent the morning trying not to audibly sniffle at my desk as I drafted goodbye emails to send tomorrow to my coworkers and colleagues, and to my outside customers/vendors (I Bcc them all, of course, good etiquette)...

After I sent out an email to all my close friends telling them to delete my email...

After I went for my last lunchtime walk, and saw harbour seals, and it rained and I did my last set of stairs...

After I transferred all my files to my supervisor and informed my "in progress" clients whom to deal with...
My boss arrives, calls me into the office and asks me to stay another month.

Seriously, that messes with my mind! I was so psychologically ready, you know? I'm not complaining at all - and yes, I said yes! it's good money! - but jeez, that messes with my mind.

At least I looked good for it:
You can't see the teal cami peeking out at the top and through the buttons of the cardi, but it's there. I wore the yellow cardi (last seen here) to cheer myself up (it's my happy colour), my workhorse tweed skirt, and my groovy new teal tights:
Hee, leg on table. They are more teal than that - they look blue there.

The stuff:
Gosh, that yellow is such a glorious marigold colour. I swear this picture wasn't blurry when I saw it on the camera (I blame the computer).

The baubles:
I am such a detail person. I love intricate detail and attention to the smallest things. See all the peace signs on the bracelet?

And check out the backs:
Double "Love"...and pretty design, chrysanthemum and a partial fish!

Cardigan (Future Paradise, consignment), cami (Smart Set), skirt (Kensie), tights (Voila), belt (Nygaard), shoes (Pink Studio), jewelry (Lucky Brand).
