An Avian Influence - Cape-Coat, Pleated Wings and Biblio Boots

Sending good vibes out into the universe for our neighbours to the south - good luck on the election. PS - not the Orange one, please?

I picked this outfit from another batch from a recent "play session" in my closet.
I always match up brand new things with stuff I already have.

  • Cape-coat - Rolypoly, consignment, Powell River; first seen here (2nd outfit) in September with leopard pants
  • Wool sweater - Tabi, thrifted; first worn here (4th outfit) in September under my Kenzo tiger dress
  • Skirt - Express, thrifted; purchased here for $9.50
  • Boots - Biblio Austen, Fluevog; purchased here at the sample sale for $249 (not including my gift cards)
  • Coat (below) - L'Atiste, consignment, Vancouver; last seen here in October

The cape-coat has only been worn once, the skirt is new-to-me and this is the first appearance of my new Fluevog boots.
I felt vaguely dissatisfied with this look - it needs a belt, as the skirt sat too low and threw off my proportions.

I was able to resolve some of that by knotting the chain of my necklace to pull it further up on my chest, pulling the eye up.
I felt better after that - live and learn!

Some days you just want to be a bird. As well as reminding me of Terri Nunn's hair, this skirt also makes me think of a gull's wing - that sharp black point against the white.
And the cape-coat felt like a shrug of wings. My colleague Vizz (not to be confused with the cat Vizzini) said my outfit definitely had an avian influence. And he loved the look, so the necklace trick worked!

Outerwear! Hooray, the storm is over!
Many parts of the lower Island are without power.

And here I am yawning - it was still dark out!
But not complaining - I had enough light for a Stair Picture.

Accoutrements:
Ooh, all that matchy red. I love it!

  • Silk scarf - Smoking Lily, vintage 90s, thrifted
  • Wool beret - consignment
  • Wool gloves - Parkhurst

Yes, those are flies on the Smoking Lily scarf. It's always Hallowe'en in my heart.

The stuff:
I took the leap and walked to and from work in my new booties! It was fraught with peril! Okay, not really - it was dry out and I avoided the piles of leaves. They were solid - I wore thin socks in addition to my tights to help stretch them out. One heel was rubbing a bit, so I put on a bandaid and massaged the leather to help loosen it up. I think they're going to be awesome.

Brutalist bling:
A bunch of my pewter Brutalist mid-70s jewelry. Most of it is Canadian-made.

  • Necklace/cuff/bracelet - all Robert Larin, vintage 70s, vintage mall, all gift from L
  • Earrings - vintage mall
  • Volcano ring - vintage 70s, Mom's
  • Square ring - thrifted

  1. Avian is the ideal descriptor. I love this theme. Birds are so cool, as are your new boots!
Thank you for the well wishes; we need them. I am really nervous for the future of the US and our democracy right now.

  3. Your avian outfit is stunning, Sheila, although I do agree it would have been even better with a belt. I'm glad your new Fluevog boots were well-behaved on their maiden voyage, the rubbing heel notwithstanding! xxx

    1. Thank you, Ann! Yes, annoyed at myself for not including a belt. Fluevog heels are often stiff, it just takes a bit of massaging to get the leather to loosen up.

  4. I love your boots! The fact that you could walk to work in them, that they have wider toe space and look fabulous….yay for another reason to smile.

I’m there with your other commenters from the States…in mourning, shock…I keep harking back to the SNL line: Keep calm-a-la and Carry-on-a-la. I watched Kamala’s concession speech and took heart, though she knows, and we know, it will get dark…

Thank you for this safe space to share and for your support of those of us agog.
    Cheers, Laurie

    1. They're awesome boots, Laurie, very comfy, and I can see they'll be even softer the more I wear them.
We are living in dark times. Be a light.
Hugs to you, hang in there!
