Neon Jammy Dress and a Birthday Stroll

HAPPY 50TH BIRTHDAY, LOGAN!
"Wait, isn't this about me?"

Wednesday was my favourite person's 50th birthday! However, since 2020 is not turning out to be quite the year we planned, we're going to save the annual Day of Indolence (last year, here) and massive Birthday Bash (last year - here - I wore 3 different outfits!) till 2021, when hopefully we'll be able to have all of the celebrations L both wants and deserves!

However, it was still a gorgeous day out, and we're not dead (yet), so we strolled to town for a look-around, and just to get out. Maybe a pub would be open!
First wearing of this new bright neon pink jammy dress - it was awesome.

  • Dress - InWear; purchased here for $20.99
  • Shoes - Enneagram Individualist, Fluevog; last seen here in March with PANK in the gloom
  • Jacket (below) - Dolce & Gabbana, vintage 90s, thrifted; last worn here in May with last-chance black (a reprieve was earned)

The two shades of pink looked better in person, but I was still the dressiest person on earth in Victoria!
Many people hooted and hollered at us.
I've read that "athleisure" will become the New Normal, but I wonder if there will be a swing in the other direction?
Maybe people will want to dress up more?

Jacketed up for sun coverage (I still am fully-sunblocked).
I'm doing Colour As Armour - I find it stressful navigating sidewalks full of people!
L "talked me down" a few times. Deep breaths, Sheila.

I nearly went with a matchy blue purse.
But I'm glad I picked this radiant yellow brocade.
I like matchy as much as the next person, but sometimes a POW of colour is more fun.

The stuff:
I walked to and from town in these shoes, and they were very comfy, although I had some rubbing on my bare toes. I should have worn little nylon socklets or "footies". I have to get my head in summer mode!

Sparkly bling:
All the sparkle! More sparkle! Even the bag has sparkle.

  • Purse - Aldo
  • Belt - Lady Foot Locker, vintage, thrifted
  • Necklace/earrings - Sherman, vintage 60s, thrifted
  • Brooch - vintage, vintage fair
  • Bracelet - Coro, vintage 70s, Mom's
  • Lapis lazuli ring/Fulvia Ring - Wendy Brandes

Here's the Birthday Guy with our little monster, Vizzini.
"I won't be your prop, Man."

L got a lot of compliments on his shoes and his band tee, which is from the hilarious pirate metal band Alestorm, a gift from me, shipped all the way from Austria last Christmas.

We discovered that the Garrick's Head, our favourite downtown pub, had just reopened, so we stopped in for a pint and lunch. Hooray! I missed their fries!
Rock on, sir.

You can see that every other table is X'd off, and people are distanced. There were also plexiglass sections along the bar, and we had to give our names/contact numbers for contact tracing in the event of an outbreak.

Fortified by our lunch success, and reminded of our missed 23rd anniversary trip to Fluevog in Vancouver where we buy each other a new pair, we thought we'd check and see if our local store was open yet...and it was!

We had a lovely time trying on a bunch of shoes (I have my eye on some that I'll stalk when they eventually go on sale), and after much consideration, this is what L bought me!
They are called the Mission Monika (link here, and all links 'cause I love), and were $449.00 (yes, you read that right - good shoes are not cheap). I sized up to a 10 and then tightened across the vamp to a perfect fit.

This style was first created in collaboration with Anna Sui for her Fall 2019 runway at Fashion Week (link here).
Rae Ann, our lovely Fluevogologist, mentioned that this heel, with the two-sided angel, is always named after someone John knew, in this case, one of his long-time store managers who died of cancer, Monika. Sad, but what a nice way to honour an employee!

The entire sole and heel are rubber, very squishy and comfy. Due to the platform, these are about a 1.5" heel, very walkable!
Did you notice that the orange fabric pattern is repeating JFs (for John Fluevog)? So cool! All of the fabric is backed with soft, supple leather.

Look at that gorgeous buckle! It's two angels, and is very Art Nouveau looking to me.
As noted, it's adjustable over the vamp, but there is elastic under there so that the shoes are slip on/off.

I've got soul/sole, baby.
I'm so excited to wear these! In case you are wondering, I bought L these casual runner-style Orbit shoes in teal, here. I also bought him a gift certificate for his birthday, so please convince him to buy the Dios, here!

We also stopped by my ex-coworker and good friend Tammy's shop, Catawumpus Fudge & Funk, and bought fudge, some cloth masks, and a present for a friend. I also found this awesome pendant.
It's a leopard! Isn't it fun? It's about 2" across, so pretty big. It was $25.00. It'll match my tiger brooch!

Vizzini, don't you want to wish L a Happy Birthday?
"Wish who a what?"

There's been a lot of napping in the last few days. I hope you're all having a great week!

  2. Happy Birthday, L! Welcome to the fab 50s!
What a strange year to celebrate a monumental birthday but it looks like you managed to enjoy yourselves despite of the situation.
Your dress is fabulous on you, the shoes and bag take it to another level, you're like a rainbow! The birthday boy looks pretty snazzy as well
Those shoes are incredible, I wouldn't know whether to frame them or wear them. Loved L's runners, too - great colour.
We were talking about how pubs will work when they are allowed to reopen. It's interesting reading how yours are handling it.
Big love to you all (that's Vizzini, too) and have a brilliant weekend. xxx

    1. We've resolved to "do over" the big celebration next year, Vix. Thanks so much for the birthday wishes.

I felt very bright, and we got a lot of attention in our outfits.

I'm excited to wear my new shoes! So fun.

I'm glad to see all the pubs opening again - we have missed them very much.

      Hugs to you, Vix!

  3. Happy Birthday L! You are going to rock your 50's!

Love your new jammy dress and the brocade purse was definitely the way to go! Zowie! And, OMG, the shoes!!!

Isn't it weird that it seems courageous to go outside and to venture into a restaurant? Who would ever have dreamed of this? We are not there yet in Ontario, so hats off to BC for getting ahead of this thing!

Looking forward to seeing you wear the new shoes and the pendant. Enjoy your weekend :)

    1. He's totally going to rock his 50s, thanks, Nana! Thanks so much! I love my bright outfit and I'm so stoked to wear the new 'Vogs.

I know, it felt very weird, but Vancouver Island hasn't had a new COVID case in over a month, so we are feeling pretty good here. I hope ON gets there soon.

      Thanks, my dear!

  6. Happy birthday to L.! It looks like you had a perfect day in spite of it all, and how lucky he is being able to celebrate his 50th twice! I'm sure it'll be one hell of a party next year! Your bright pink dress is gorgeous, and wonderfully accessorized too. Love that you opted for the yellow brocade bag. POW indeed! How fortunate you were that both the pub and Fluevog were open. Our pubs and restaurants are allowed to open from June 8. Let's see how that goes. The Mission Monika shoes are all kinds of fabulous - that heel is amazing! - although I almost choked when I saw their price tag. But from reading your blog, I know that Fluevog is amazing quality, so I'm sure they are worth it. I will never ever ever wear "athleisure" clothes. Even just the term gives me the heebie-jeebies, as does "New Normal", to be honest. Have a great weekend, Sheila! xxx

    1. Thank you so much, Ann! I know, mild celebrations this year, and a big party next year!

I loved the bright yellow with the vibrant pink and blues. It was a magic day of things being open - I'm really happy we were able to support 3 downtown businesses. Good luck with your pubs!

I love the Monikas - aren't they fab? I know, very pricey, but L bought them (heh), not me! I usually stalk their shoes until they go on sale. They are worth it!

Ugh, I'll never be an athleisure person. I'm also against "the new normal" - it's lazy and doesn't acknowledge that there is NO normal. Hope you had a good one, Ann!

  9. Your new shoes are bananas and also AWESOME. I'm into shoes that are on the chunkier side and I feel like those would "go" with more than you'd think initially. Great gunmetal/burnt orange combo, very cool/unique details.

Even as someone who tends to dress a little more casually, I'd hate to see athleisure totally take over. Maybe instead, people will start treating going out- for whatever reason- as an event to get dressed up for. I know I'm thinking more about what I wear and making more of an effort, despite still just going out to the grocery store mostly.

Your day sounded pretty nice, despite less partying than normal. I think (and hope!) 2021 will be filled with lots of fun parties for a lot of people. Happy birthday to the hubs!

    1. Bananas + AWESOME pretty much describes my style, Ashley, ha ha! I think they are going to be a great addition to my wardrobe. I am all about details!

Oh, yes, I like that - I hope that people will realize how lucky they are to be going out again, and will dress up appropriately! We can hope!

It was a lovely holiday, and no matter what the next year brings, we'll always be able to celebrate in some way. Thank you!

  14. Happy birthday to Logan. He looks very stylish in his rock styling. I like his pointy shoes- very chic. I think my husband has a similar pair somewhere. Vizzini looks chic too, but then cats always do. Great photos. I hope you enjoyed the birthday. You two are a lovely pair.
That hot pink dress is lovely and I like you paired with a denim jacket and pink heels. This is a great look. The golden brocade bag is a beauty. Maybe people will want to dress up more. It would be fun to see. I don't mind the sporty and casual style as such, I wear casual outfits myself but sometimes I feel like it has taken all the fun out of fashion. People dress casually most of the time now.

Those heels with a heel decorated with angels are a work of art. How sweet they were named after an employee that died of cancer. It is a nice dedication. The angel details on them seems so much more meaningful after knowing that.

    1. Thanks, Ivana, he is a very stylish guy, isn't he? He's a big fan of pointy shoes. Vizzini's always in his tux, ready for any occasion!

Thank you - I loved these colours all together. I hope people will dress up for special occasions more, going forward. I am okay with sporty in the right venue, but I really hope that dressy clothes will have a renaissance!

I know, isn't that sweet? I never thought I'd own these shoes, but I loved them the second I put them on.

  17. Happy 50th Logan! There will definitely have to be a big bash to celebrate in the future. I'm envious you were able to go to a restaurant. The heels on your new shoes are magnificent - I've never seen anything like that (leave it to Fluevog).

Yes, athleisure wear has certainly become the norm over here, and I am guilty of wearing it at home during the week, but I've missed wearing "real clothes" and put on a beautiful long full skirt for a socially-distanced visit with my bestie on the weekend.

  18. Happy Birthday, L!! It's such a shame for everyone who's celebrations have been in lockdown. Still, it looks like you made the most of it. I am so jealous off you being able to go to the pub. It's one of the things that I am missing the most. The infection rate is still pretty high here so I think it will be a while until we can return xx

  19. Fabulously happy (belated) birthday wishes to Logan! I'm sorry that his b-day was impacted by the pandemic situation. Tony has a milestone (his 40th) coming up in August and its anyone's guess at this point as to how social isolated or not that will be.

Those shoes are utterly exquisite! They have such a gothy, fall time, neo-rococo vibe to them - and I'm totally here for it! :)
