Weekend Wrap-Up: Plaid Shopping Dress, Christmas Carol Sparkle, More Red for Shopping

It's been a lovely weekend, with lots of downtime, games and socialness. I also wore a lot of red, but it wasn't really on purpose. I just have a lot of red my wardrobe.
This is my Saturday brunch with L outfit, also worn for Christmas dress shopping afterwards with my coworker, Dana.

  • Dress - Naughty; last worn here in October 2016 for brunch (same boots!)
  • Boots - 1883 Lucchesse, consignment; last seen here (4th outfit) in October, worn to the Ulti field
  • Coat (below) - Danier Leather; last worn here on Friday

This is my entry for "Visible Monday" over at Patti's Not Dead Yet Style. Go, go, go!
I love this dress - it's always a brunch dress (I have a collection of brunch dresses, all year round), as it's cotton flannel. A little too casual for work, but I should do it one of these days. I do adore the dress.
L and I had a nice brunch at Floyd's Diner, then he went Christmas shopping and I met up with Dana at the WIN store downtown.

Outerwear - all easy, non-bulky things that I can shove in my purse or pockets while I shop.
The rain stopped this weekend, which has been a treat. Rain all you want while I'm at work!

  • Fur boa - thrifted
  • Gloves - Parkhurst

The stuff:
Although I wasn't shopping for me, I wore simple pieces "just in case.

  • Belt - Gap, consignment
  • Cuff - Rimanchik
  • Earrings - 10th anniversary gift from L

I was a little early to meet Dana, so I stopped in at the St. Vincent de Paul. I spotted a stretch black velvet tulip-cut skirt for $2.50 and this blue tunic/dress that I thought would fit her, and since they only came to $7.50, I bought them.
"What did you buy me?"
The skirt fit her perfectly, but this dress was way too tight.
I brought it home, thinking I could take it to work for another coworker - but I tried it on, and it fit me perfectly. The brand is Mossimo (a Target label), and the sizing is XXL. Seriously? That is some whack sizing! Anyway, this will be lovely for my summer Saturday brunches/Ulti mornings, so I'm keeping it!

As Dana and I were shopping, I spotted this fantastic skirt. It looks like dragonscale or armour!
It is the coolest - it really reminds me of the 1970s, with all those bronze/gold/caramel colours in it, but it's likely late 90s/early 00s.

Look at the inside - every one of those silk fabric circles was sewn on individually by hand. So much work!
The brand is Strawberry Jill (I used to own this skirt by them). They were a local company from 10+ years ago.
 Only $18.95!

I rushed home to get ready to go out to the Belfry Theatre with Mom. We went to see "A Christmas Carol" - a favourite of mine.
 Seasonally sparkling has started!

  • Sweater - Tatyana, thrifted; last worn here (2nd outfit) last weekend for my tattoo
  • Skirt - J Studio, thrifted; first worn here in December 2016 with heavy metal
  • Shoes - Queen of Prussia Louise, Fluevog; last worn here in October with a lot of chevrons
  • Coat (below) - Rodarte for Opening Ceremony, thrifted; first worn here in November with mad plaid

Requirements for the theatre: Sparkly, warm, easy to sit in, can walk to and from the Belfry.
Swoosh! Done! Actually, this skirt is not swooshy at all - it's very stiff.

I wore a full-length vintage slip under this for extra warmth.
The skirt is bands of red, gold and black.

I wore my ringmaster coat.
 Warm and still dressy.
I loved how the tails split over the full skirt.

The stuff:
It's quite the heel on those shoes, but they were fine for our stroll to and from the theatre. Mom and I enjoyed the sprinkle of Christmas lights in the neighbourhood, and that great big full moon!

Gold bling:
A little bit of vintage, a little bit of modern.

  • Necklace - D'Orlan, vintage 60s, thrifted
  • Bracelet - Lia Sophia, thrifted
  • Cuff - thrifted
  • Earrings - Weiss, vintage 60s, vintage fair
  • Ring - c. 1996

Oops, forgot to take my ring off.
 There it is.

A great shot of Mom and I.
Statement necklaces and red shiny patterns. Like mother, like daughter.

Off to do my grocery shop today. Not much effort ensues.
Dress and boots and coat. Minimal make-up.

  • Dress - Boo Radley, thrifted; last seen here (4th outfit) in October with Saturday's cowboy boots
  • Boots - Lucky Brand, swap from Cat; last worn here in October for Hallowe'en
  • Coat (below) - Danier Leather; last worn yesterday, above

 Pockets!
I wandered over to the WIN Boutique as I haven't been there for a while. I was keeping an eye out for presents for L, really.
No scarf or gloves, as it was mild and sunny.

The stuff:
 Blink and you'll miss it.

  • Earrings - Glee

I tried on a few things (and I did find something for L), and ended up with this little bit of whackadoo.
Cropped pants! They are sort of a light denim, with shading, screenprinted design at the waist and hem and Swarovski crystals.
"They look chewable."
Detail of the buttons and the waistband.
I like the "sailor-style" of the front double row of buttons, but can see that it might be a pain for going to the bathroom (she said, ever practical). However, I've mastered a jumpsuit, so this is a piece of cake (she said, optimistically).

The design. It has a cherub and roses and swirly things!
I knew the brand - Michal Negrin - as we have a Negrin store here in Victoria. These pants aren't current, but I've been in the store - it's not cheap, but the clothes are elaborate and beautiful. Check out her site (linking 'cause I love, of course!).
I paid $29.95 - these would have been over $500 new. They are all hand made, from the silkscreening to the assembly, to the embellishment with the Swarovski crystals, in Israel. Have you ever heard of Michal Negrin?

  1. I've never heard of Michael negrin but I'm looking forward to seeing how you wear those pants! Will you wear them now, maybe with boots, or pack them away for warmer weather as they aren't full length?

    1. I'll wear them now! They are too fun - I think they will look good with a heel.

  2. What a action packed weekend! That checked dress looks fantastic on you, it's very Vivienne Westwood in its cut, isn't it?
Your theatre outfit is gorgeous, that gilt necklace is pure Bollywood and the ringmaster's coat is fabulous. Shout out to your stylish Mum, too!
I love how Vizzini gets in on the new purchase action. My beasts love to sit on my finds, you've brought yours up properly.
Love the leather fish scale skirt so much, I'd have snapped that up. I had some Kate Moss hot pants with a similar fastening to those funky trousers, I had to sell them in the end as trying to get them back on after a few drinks and a toilet stop meant I'd be missing for ages! xxx

    1. Yes, isn't it a cool dress? I love the Westwood vibe of it. Thanks so much, Vix!

Vizzini is a monkey - he gets into everything, and he's a ham for the camera. I wish the skirt were leather, but it's "just" silk.

They should always make that kind of fastening for pants with snaps instead of buttons! Totally not a practical way of doing them up, I agree!

  4. Vizzini's face is priceless! I do love the blue tunic/dress, can't wait to see it on you. How divine is that skirt with the dragon scales! I'm loving your theatre outfit, and the photo with your Mum. That necklace you wore with it is fabulous! XXX

    1. He's a real character, that's for sure. I won't be wearing the blue dress until summer, so it'll be a long while yet. Thank you so much, Ann!

  5. My friend is a size 20 and I'm usually a size 8 - it was too tight on her (true!) and fit me perfectly (true!). No slight on her (or me), but a comment on the stoopid whack sizing! My intent is that it didn't fit her but fit me - how off is that XXL sizing?? Thanks for your comment.

  6. Some fab outfits, Sheila, I think my favourite is the theatre outfit. It looks really lovely on you. I would have thought the 60s necklace was a current one as I've seen similar ones around.

I loved your purchases; those trousers are just fabulous.

Vizzini gets cuter by the day. I wonder what he thinks about you putting words in his mouth?

    1. I'm pretty sure I get Vizzini's thoughts right 95% of the time. :)

Thanks, Veronica! Everything comes around again, doesn't it!

  8. I had not heard of Michael Negrin, but those are just the kind of wackadoo pants that make my heart sing! Looking forward to seeing them in an outfit.
I love that grey and black checked dress too - the wider shoulder straps and the way the skirt drapes makes it a fantastic piece. All your outfits in this post are stellar!!

    1. I know, aren't they cool? She is an Israeli designer, everything's made in Israel - wonderful digital printwork.

It's actually a soft baby blue, with red and a bit of navy - and flannel! Thank you, Shelly!

    1. It's a statement, for sure! He's a she, actually - yes, I don't go in that store here, as it's too rich for my blood! This is the first piece I've ever seen pop up second-hand. Score!

  10. I appreciate your thoughts on this, AB - I actually showed Dana my post (she had already read it), and asked her how she felt about what I'd said - she didn't get that read at all, thankfully. I do write my posts really quickly, and it's often just "blerg, just write it" with these big posts. But it's a good reminder for me to pay attention to how I phrase things to do with body shapes, sizes and fit. Thank you again!

  11. You have a dress by Tangerine Jill, don't you? (I remember because I covet it and have looked for a similar one on ebay several times!) Are they associated with Strawberry Jill in any way or is it just a funny coincidence?

    1. Yes, I have a couple, actually - my stained glass dress and the eyeball dress are both Tangerine Jill. It is the same Jill - Jill Pemberton - who was a local Victoria artist who launched first Strawberry Jill, then went on to do Tangerine Jill. You probably wouldn't see too much of these lines outside of the west coast of Canada. Here's an article about Jill Pemberton from 2007 that mentions she's been doing this for a few years. https://www.pressreader.com/canada/regina-leader-post/20070710/281698315338862

    2. Ah, I was referring to the stained glass dress. I actually have seen it on ebay once, but it wasn't in my size! Thanks for the article :)

    3. You're welcome! I see very little Tangerine or Strawberry Jill in the stores, sadly - I always grab it when I do!
