Weekend Wrap-Up: A Hair Thing, Artsy Tangles, Purple Lace

Another awesomely fun weekend! Here's Friday's outfit.
I had a haircut after work on Friday and I needed to show my new hairdresser how I style my hair on the weekends so that she can cut to suit that look as well as my usual "work hair."

  • Shirt - Dex, consignment; last seen here in March with blue Courreges
  • Crocheted cami - Fairweather, thrifted; purchased here for $3.00
  • Skirt - Nicole Miller, vintage 80s, consignment; last worn here in July 2014 with Shoes My Husband Hates
  • Boots - Libby Smith Bellevues, Fluevog; last seen here for Shoe Shine #14; last worn here way back in March 2014 (aw, wedding picture!).
It worked really well - she was very appreciative I left with an excellent haircut and tipped her a bottle of wine.
This was a fun "rock & roll" outfit for work. As usual, whenever I wear a scarf in my head, my coworkers struggle with what to call it. "Headpiece", "hat" and "hair thing." Yes, that's exactly it.

I love all these colours together.
"Makin' my rounds, rubbing your leg."
It was raining by the time I got home, so it felt lovely to hole up and play boardgames with L.

The stuff:
I'm shocked that I barely have worn these boots in a year, although I don't do the steampunk-inspired looks so much now. I still love 'em!

The stuff:
Large baubles.

  • Earrings - local
  • Lapis lazuli ring and Fulvia Ring - Wendy Brandes

I took it easy on the wine (go me!) so that I'd be all bright-eyed early on Saturday morning.
I went to a Zentangle for Beginners class with my friend K - it ran from 9am - 12:30pm and was loads of fun. That's still a pretty early start for a weekend, though!

  • Cardigan - Jacob, thrifted; last seen here (yikes!) back in January 2014
  • Sweater - Jaeger, thrifted; last worn here in February with copper shoes
  • Skirt - Gunex, thrifted; last seen here with sparkly red in December 2014
  • Boots - Doc Martens, consignment; last worn here (2nd outfit) in January to Zentangle with K

I met K on the bus and cruised over. The 3.5 hours flew by and we went for brunch afterwards.
I did a bit of walking, so the Docs were welcome.

I made sure I was really visible!
Bam! All the colour!

The stuff:
I love these shoes so much. The scarf tied it all together.

  • Scarf - Ralph Lauren, consignment
  • Copper rings - vintage fair
  • Bronze ring - P. Sarpaneva, vintage 1970, vintage fair
  • Earrings - local

Barb Round was our instructor - here she is working through a large version of a tangle for us. Her site here, linking 'cause I love.

It was very interesting. I like the structure of following a pattern and learning a few simple formulae for creating an artistic expression. It would certainly take the pressure off if you couldn't figure out what to do with your pen and paper, and yes, it's relaxing to sit and focus on something that you can completely finish in less than an hour.

But I would compare it like this: Zentangle is to drawing what magnetic words are to poetry. It's a fun thing to do and can certainly spark creativity, but not the same as actually creating something inspired. I guess I am an art snob.

Anyway, I thoroughly enjoyed it and didn't mind missing the first day of Ultimate. It was good to hang out with K, as well.

This is my first tangle, before I shaded it.
All of these designs are things I've done before.

With the shading - it makes a huge difference.
3.5 x 2.5" tile, so that's close to actual size
The mosaic of all of the students' tiles:
Can you pick out mine?

This is my second tile.
I found all of the designs pretty easy. It's just a matter of learning how they are constructed.

Do you see mine?
I've been practicing a bunch of the tangles over the past couple of months, since I went to K's house in January to draw one afternoon.

I couldn't resist a couple of the books Barb had for sale.
I'm excited to try a couple of tangling projects. I bought some paper fans from Chinatown today, thinking they would be cool to decorate.

Speaking of today, off I strolled this morning to get the groceries.
It's starting to get a little warmer here, but our springs are very changeable. One minute rain, then windy, then sunny.

  • Dress - Jacob, thrifted; last seen here in August 2014 with the same tights
  • Boots - Ash; last worn here (3rd outfit) in March

I wandered down to Chinatown, as I mentioned. I found paper fans for 89 cents and $1.29 to tangle on before I tackle a bigger project I have in mind: a paper parasol! You can buy white and solid colour ones for $12.99. Not bad!
Still chilly today.
Much purple. I like the lace, leather, floral and studs, plus all the colour. So much more fun than the sea of yoga pants I observed in town.

The stuff:
Heavenly boots.

  • Earrings - local

I stopped in the mall briefly and popped into Migration. Found some little studs for $8.00.
And a pretty chiffon pink and yellow bow for $8.00. Will I wear it in my hair or on my clothes? The possibilities!

I checked the Patch quickly and had some luck.
This top was $12.99 and is by BCBG Max Azria. I love the soft peachy colour and the side draping.

I felt like another summer maxi dress was in order.
This is a high-low version (short in front, high in the back). It's by Apple Bottoms and was $19.99.

I seriously fell for this beautiful Calvin Klein dress.
It has exposed seaming over the entire dress, and is beautifully flowy. It was $29.99.

Of course, I snatched up this rosy-pink leather cardigan!
Holy smokes, it's holey!

That's a vintage Danier label.
I love that it's real leather and not PVC. And only $19.99? Score!

How was your weekend? Any scores?

  1. I have never heard of Zentangling but it looks like something instinctive. I love your psychedelic tights and that yellow CK dress. Oh, and of course the lime green jacket. I almost got some things in the last few days, but after being in my catacomb of clothing, held off. Such will power!

  2. That leather cardigan is beautiful, as is that yellow dress. You find the nicest things.

The zentangle session sounds like a lovely way to spend a few hours with a friend. I know you said it was easy, but the designs do look very intricate and like they would take a while!

  8. I had never heard of Zentangle until now. It looks like it would be interesting to do.

You are rocking the hair scarf/thing! I like wearing scarves with my short hair too. All the colours are great (that green leather jacket is just toooo cool). Love the look of a full, floofy skirt with docs.
