Special Occasion - L's 40th Birthday Party!

Well, party's over, the dishwasher's running and the decorations are down. I'm left with a fridge of random beers.

As I mentioned, L's favourite NFL team is the Miami Dolphins, whose colours are aqua and orange, so our theme was that everyone had to wear aqua, orange or white to the party. There was a dazzing array of these colours - it was so bright and summery! Thanks everyone for rising to the challenge.

I wore my orange silk dress. I haven't worn it in over two years, which is shameful. I got many compliments on my shoes! They fit the theme so perfectly.

A close-up of my accessories:
My eyes are closed to show my aqua eyeshadow.

We decorated:
Dolphins blanket on the chair, the pillow. I always do up food, and tried to follow the theme: a fruit plate with orange cantaloupe, orange peppers, orange cauliflower, baby carrots, white ranch dip, white Smartfood popcorn, blue tortilla chips, white cheeses, cheese puffs. I also found aqua sour feet candies and raspberry blue bon bons from the British Sweet Shop. I got the orange and aqua napkins and plates from the Dollar Store.

I like multiple food stations for parties:
Cheese Sun Chips in the football dish, my homemade black bean salsa, more cheese.

Our friends Zeb and Alicia brought these Dolphins cupcakes that they made! Amazing!
Here's the decorations prior to everyone arriving:
I also did crepe streamers across the kitchen ceiling, and at the front door. Inigo scoped out the balloons.

We ran the DVD of Miami winning Super Bowls VII and VIII on mute all night:
I went to bed around 4:30 am...*yawn*...and got up at the crack of 11:30 am. Whew! I think I need a nap.

However, I've been very busy sorting out my oufits for this week! I'm participating in Sal's "Summer Black-Out 2010" and I am choosing to forgo from wearing any black (not even in accessories or patterns) from Monday to Monday (thanks, Kasmira!) this week. I'm also participating in Jane's latest challenge: The Summer Capsule Wardrobe! Only 5 (thanks for catching my error, Cara!) clothing items, but unlimited shoes and accessories. I'm not counting my workout clothes, FYI, or a coat (which I will need as I stand in the rain at my nieces' soccer game tomorrow).

It's two TWO TWOchallenges in one week! And my VP is here again. Ha, he is going to think I am insane.

Dress (InWear), belt (Bianca Nygaard), shoes (Poetic Licence), bangles (mix of ethnic from India and brass from Aldo Accessories), ring (consignment grab-bag), earrings (can't remember).

  1. Wow! What a lovely dress! It is a shame you haven't worn it in 2 years, it looks fantastic on you. The shoes were a perfect match.

    The food looks delicious.

Goodluck on the Double Whammy Challege. I'll only be participating in the Black out one, but I'll be foregoing black shoes and accessories too.

  2. Totally cutie-patootie!!! The home looks fabulous all decked out in Dolphin regalia. Lately, I've been really digging all shades of orange, particularly when paired with blue. Do they have Howard Johnson restaurants in Canada. As a kid, it was one of our family outings for ice cream and "Ho Jo" colas - LOL!!! Their logo colors are (were) orange and blue -- maybe the founder was a Dolphins fan? ;-P

    Love your spirit, Sheila!

  3. You had me worried there for a minute, Sheila! You've got 4 items down for the challenge... fortunately, we get five... unless you're taking it an extra step! That's definitely more ambitious than I can me!
Thanks for the comment on my blog... I've been behind on writing AND reading... my netbook is away on repairs, so I've been enjoy the sun with a book!

  4. Happy Birthday to L!

Those colours look fantastic on you!

BTW Sheila I have just caught up on your blog. Hubby and I were in Paris from 20th to 28th May! We stayed at the Intercontinental just adjacent to the Arc de Triomphe (on Avenue Marceau)...and to think we could have met! I wish, anyway. Please let me know the dates you were there so I can kick myself!

    Lots of love,
    Mervat.

  7. That is such a nice color combo!
I love all the details you went into... the decoration, the food, the Dolphin blanket, pillow and YOUR DRESS
I really do not know how you have not worn it in so long!

  8. Girl, you really know how to throw a party. It looks like it must have been so much fun! How many people actually stuck to the wardrobe requirements?

Tell the truth :) - did your wonderful outfit in any way influence your decision to throw a Dolphins themed party? (it would have for me!)

  10. Thanks, Jean! It looked amazing with everyone in their aqua and orange! No, we don't have Howard Johnson (at least, not in my town), but I have heard of it.

Megan, thanks! It's just too delicate and dressy for work (it's also a bit tight, eep!). The food was gooood - I wish I'd eaten more. Ooh, I will come see your Black-Out looks!

Thanks, Cara - I fixed it and gave you credit! :) Reading is always a great excuse for not blogging.

Thanks, Mervat! Oh, how fun for you guys! We were there from May 12-15th, so I missed you.

Thanks, Wendy! It was a blast!

    Jenny, thanks! I'm excited too!

Thank you, Lorena! We already had the Dolphins blanket (and we have 3 pillows). The dress is a very floaty silk, so it's not really a work dress.

Tina, I give good party, heh. Everyone participated - I was so shocked! It was awesome, all that colour! No, L and I had already planned the theme of the party - I had about 10 things I could have worn easily. It did influence me to buy the shoes, though.

Thank you, Wendy! Yes, not every dress works or should work for every day.
