Mad for Plaid - and Dad

I was good last night and planned five outfits for this week. This is not my favourite, but it incorporates some of the new stuff I got on my wee shopping trip to my favourite consignment store (shout out to Annie! Leche's rules!).
I think it's the shoes that make this not...quite...there. The rounded toes throw it off visually and make my legs look thicker. I think my thighs have gotten bigger since I started aikido: my weight's about the same, but all my pants are fitting tighter in the thigh. Huh. Not sure I like that!

The new-to-me items are the blouse (which replaces my worn-out H&M black blouse - almost the identical style) and the red leather belt. I do love a bigass belt.

The stuff:
Those are such cool shoes...but maybe not with this outfit. I should've worn red shoes.

Today is my Dad's birthday. He would have been 67 years old. Here's Mom and Dad on a cruise to Alaska, about 3 months before he died.
He had a heart attack just after doing 3 hours' training for the marathon. He was in a coma for a week before we took him off life support - the hardest decision I've ever had to make in my life. He never woke up. He died a couple of days later. He was 55 when he died.

I get my long bony hands from my dad, as well as my baby-fine hair and my sticky-outie ears. Although most people say I look a lot like my mom, I do have a lot of inherited characteristics from my dad's side of the family.
Happy Birthday, Dad. I miss you.

Blouse (Club Monaco, consignment), bustier (Le Chateau, consignment), belt (consignment), pants (Vero Moda), shoes (Jeffrey Campbell), jewelry (Plum).

  1. Oh Honey, so sad about your Dad he was too young. I can't imagine what a difficult that had to be for you and your family.

Now on to your outfit, very cute. I actually like the shoes with the outfit, nice pop of color. Don't worry about your thighs, you look great.

    Take care!

  2. Your parents look so full of joie de vivre which you have inherited.
What a sad story and he was so young.
    Thanks for sharing.

  5. Aw, you guys made me tear up - thank you. It's been a long time since Dad died, and I'm okay with it now, although of course I miss him.

Thanks, Alison. I'll write about that year sometime - it was a doozy!

And I guess I just have to get used to having muscular thighs. :)

    Jane: thanks.

    Mervat, thank you.

    Sal - thanks so much.

  6. I'm sorry to hear about your Dad. 55 is so young. Your parents do look wonderfully happy in that photo.

I like the color of shoes with that outfit, but I can see what you mean about the shape. Fun colors overall.

  7. Thanks, Cat. I love that I have that picture of them having fun.

I think I may toss the pants (and get some new-to-me ones, of course). I'm not liking the way they look.

  8. So sorry about your father, truly too young, it must have been so shocking.

At least your parents look adorably happy, and it sounds as if you admired and loved him very much. No doubt he was proud to have you as a daughter.

My father died last May, in his sleep of a coronary thrombosis at the age of 71. We hadn't spoken for 4 years, he'd never even seen my son, the baby of his 5 grandchildren.

That you have the warm memories you do are a true blessing....a treasure to carry on beyond the tragic loss.

But I can tell you know that :)

  9. Thanks, Kayleigh. *hug*

Yeah, it was a huge shock. It came in a really stressful year of deaths (which I'll write about some time) and other huge life-changing events.

I regret not getting to know my dad as an adult (me, not him). It was far too young for him to die. But the memories I do have are mostly good.

So sorry to hear about your own father's death. That's a tough thing to reconcile with when you haven't been close.
